"See how it all began"

Film Synopsis:

See how the Muppets began, with the nearly 35th Anniversary Special Edition of the original, classic that started it all—The Muppet Movie, produced by the cultural icon and Muppet creator himself, Jim Henson! Witness the hilarious origins of everyone’s favorite Muppets--Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Animal, and the rest—as they embark on an inspirational and laugh-filled road trip to follow their Hollywood dreams.

My Take:

As a child I remember watching The Muppets on TV in primetime. It was a great show that featured Jim Henson’s creations in often funny skits, great celebrity guests and wholesome entertainment that could be enjoyed by the entire family. With the show’s popularity the move to the big screen seemed natural and Jim and his team struck pay dirt with The Muppet Movie. Once again Kermit and his band of rag tags proved how entertaining they could be in this wonderful family film that told their story in an adventurous, spirited and entertainingly familiar way. Supported by a host of top tier celebrity cameos, some old school like Bob Hope, Milton Berle and Edgar Bergen and some younger up and coming Hollywood talent such as Steve Martin, Richard Pryor and Carol Kane.

As with the show there are a variety of musical numbers that feature the Muppet gang and we get the chance to see Kermit’s start as well as how he meets everyone as they ultimately follow him in pursuit of their dreams. The Muppet Movie gave fans the chance to experience these endearing characters on a bigger scale with movie sized effects and movie themed depth. The film did very well and spawned a series of sequels that took The Muppets to NYC and even outer space. Revisiting it after all these years was lots of fun and while it is a bit dated it has a timeless and ingratiating quality that is transcendent. I am pleased to see it released on Blu-ray in this Nearly 35th anniversary edition.

Parental Guide:

This film is appropriate for all audiences.

The Muppet Movie comes to Blu-ray Disc from Disney featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 36 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate 2.3 Mbps.

Overall this 1.85:1 framed high definition presentation looks solid on Blu-ray. Resolution and overall clarity is quite good although sharpness can be minimally inconsistent. This appears innate and generally affects sequences which include abundant special effects shots. Otherwise images are predominantly well resolved with discernible definition and fair rendering of fine detail. Color balance is excellent as both primary and secondary hues appear vivid with clean rendering and pleasing levels of saturation. Skin tones have good tonal depth, delineated highlights and lifelike texture. Black levels and shadow detail are solid and contrast appears spot on. I didn’t see any signs of the application of unwanted noise reduction or excessive manipulation. Grain is rendered in even layers that can become a bit noticeable against dark backgrounds but I never found it to be objectionable. The print is in excellent shape and shows no signs of deleterious wear.

The lossless soundtrack is presented in a front oriented mix that is highlighted by Paul Williams’ catchy music. The presentation is spread across the front of the room with subtle environmental cues that blend nicely with the visual elements in the film. Dialogue is reproduced with excellent clarity and room penetration through the center channel. The soundstage opens up during a handful of sequences and extends the dynamic range a bit but there is little here to keep your subwoofer thumping. I thought this was a satisfying and appropriate surround mix that hit the high points quite well.

Bonus Features:

  • Disney Intermission

  • Frog-E-Oke Sing-Along

  • Jim Frawley’s extended camera test – 18 minutes

  • (HD) Doc Hopper’s commercial

  • Original and teaser trailers

  • Pepe Profiles Presents: Kermit – A frog’s life – 6 minutes

  • Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

The Muppet Movie is a timeless classic in every sense and is an endearing and charming family film that can be enjoyed by generations. It makes it high definition debut from Disney in this Nearly 35 anniversary edition that features faithful video quality, gratifying lossless sound and a decent supplemental package. This is a must have for fans and comes recommended.
