"Their American Dream Is Bigger Than Yours."

Film Synopsis:

A trio of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.

My Take:

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For some its being healthy, others are content getting by and being happy with a loving family, but some are never content and obsess about having more (like me with my never ending upgrade and my refusal to go into the ultra high end 20k and up forum). Daniel Lugo (Marky Mark Wahlberg) had enough of being a personal trainer to the rich, and in his mind, inferior human specimens. I mean really, look at his body. He deserves their success, their money, and hits a breaking point where he concocts a scheme to take a wealthy business mans fortune over, while leaving him desolate. He enlists the help of an ex-drug addict and newly religious ex-con bodybuilder (Duane Johnson) and another easily manipulated bodybuilder (Anthony Mackie). The three get caught over their heads in this criminal enterprise, as they make mistake after mistake in a snowball of stupidity. The best part is they don't even realize how foolish they really are, as they keep on going well after anyone else would have called it a day.

There is not much plot beyond that, and to get into specific moments to truly paint a picture of how dumb these guys are, how brazen their attitude is and how dark and violent, yet strangely fluffy this movie is would give some of the fun away. The most insane part is that it is based on a true story, and from my research it is seemingly accurate.

What better a location for a Michael Bay (Transformers) film than Miami?? The golden sun, the colorful scenery-- all fit his big bold colorful and fast style of film-making. Like him or not, it sure worked well with Pain & Gain, and it also fit this absolutely insane story. Clocking in at over 2 hours, I was never bored, ad was truly impressed with the acting here, especially Duane Johnson. This is not your typical comedy, not your typical crime flick and not your typical Micheal Bay film. I enjoyed it and recommend it as a change of pace for a mindless popcorn flick night.

Parental Guide:

Rated R for bloody violence, crude sexual content, nudity, language throughout and drug use

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Pain & Gain comes to Blu-ray Disc from Paramount Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22.4 Mbps and DTS-MA HD 5.1 sound that has an average bitrate of 3.6 Mbps

This one sure is a superb transfer from Paramount. It's colorful, full of fine details that are visible on everything, on ever frame, and has that extra bit of depth only the top tier releases can realize. Of course the colors are a bit overblown and contrast a wee bit boosted in a stylistic choice that perfectly fits the movie as well as its plot and location. Flesh tones cook a bit too much, but it is a sun soaked local and these are meathead body builders we are talking about here. Blacks were inky and never suffered crush or issues in shadow.

The audio is really fun as well. Aggressive, yet articulate, dynamics mingled with fidelity in a mix that took on a life of its own. Low end is tight and punchy, surrounds used perfectly, and dialogue always came through no matter the location of a gym, a stripclub or a screaming match. This is one not to be missed.

Bonus Features:

  • UV Copy

  • Digital Copy

  • DVD Copy

Final Thoughts:

I was not expecting this but Pain & Gain gets a recommendation from me. Chalk it up to preconceived notions, but I was expecting something completely brainless and silly. What I found was a character study of desperation to obtain a false American dream of material possessions and all around excess. Great looking video and phenomenal audio make this a must-see, however, it's lack of special features make it a tough buy. I will be giving this another spin soon.

Thanks, Lee. Considering the astonishingly messed-up true story it was based on, though, I'm really bummed to see there are no special features whatsoever on this disc. frown.gif

This would have been a fun movie if it were not a true story. It's messed up. I really did not like it and would not want to watch it again.

Ok rethinking if this is worth it to purchase over renting. Special features never push me off the fence because I usually don't get around to watching them anyway. So to the ones that have seen it, is it worth the 20 some dollars?

Great, Frank!

Yeah, looking forward to Iron Man 3 (3D though wink.gif ). Speaking of audio, just wanted to let you know I upgraded my BD player to a PS3 and the difference is more than noticeable, both video- and audio-wise: Total Recall now has considerably fewer issues with audio drop-outs or video stuttering; Immortals 3D doesn't stutter anymore; etc etc. But, most importantly, the overall audio quality is giving me the pleasure I got from upgrading from DVD to BD--not to mention upgrading my home theater system as well--all over again! Man, the audio in both Recall and Immortals is bad-a$$! I remember your suggesting getting a better BD player, and I just wanted to emphasize it really does make a difference for those on the fence. Thx Frank! cool.gif

Good to see it got sorted in the blu ray department smile.gif . Immortals had an amazing audio track, awesome LFE. I hope the Pq is good on 3D as it is on 2D in Iron man 3. Will be watching it again soon.

Great write up Lee! and good call on Dwayne Johnson's performance, as I would favor Wahlberg for pulling this kind of role off with ease ,but this was the "Rocks" defining moment for me, as he had me laughing out loud at times and nailed a solid convincing performance! The pristine video is eye candy for sure and an audio mix that suits the movie well. There will be a lot of buzz around this one and had I did a blind buy, It would be a worthy addition to the collection wink.gif

I thought mark and Dwayne were both great in this flick. I can't believe this was a true life event however, so bizarre.

I saw this last night, and some of the humor they were going for in it didn't quite hit the mark. But over all I liked it alot.

I always enjoy seeing these types of movies, where it's so unreal that what happened actually did happen in real life. I tried googling to see what other info I could find on this whole back story and didn't find much. frown.gif

Marky Mark and The Rock are pretty much can't miss type actors in my book.

I'm surprised that the fact that Dexter's apartment was shown in this seemed to not catch anyone's eye!

That was very cool to see. biggrin.gif

I found it very hard to watch on so many levels. Definitely a rental, no way I'd ever want to watch it again.

Agree. It was the worst movie I have seen in a long time. I didn't even make it to the end it was so bad. Glad I rented instead of buying eek.gif

Wife and I grimaced thru the first 1/2 hour or so then speed watched to the end to see what happened. We were disappointed in the Rock and Michael Bay that they crapped out this kind of porn. Unfortunately I am sitting here looking at the redbox copy that I forgot to return today so I am sad to say that I will have paid a whole $3 to subject myself to this #@$!
