Hey Ralph ... great review and huge score on audio/video. This may have to be one of the first Bluray films I've purchased outright since Avengers. Assuming I can find the time to watch it that is!

I'm sure I'd find it worth the time, but I like to watch things relatively loud and my 6 year old, 15 month old and wife may not find it quite as enjoyable when I they have to leave the house.. smile.gif

I really need to move into a larger house or finish my basement! rolleyes.gif

Yeah, Paramount sucks (especially regarding the commentary track). Most major showing of contempt for the consumer since Disney's OZ release.

Wal-Mart
Exclusiveness: $40 Steelbook case plus Hot Wheels-produced figurine of the U.S.S. Vengeance

Best Buy
Exclusiveness: $20 ($3 cheaper than the regular edition, oddly) 2D-only that has 30 minutes of exclusive featurettes (focusing on alien design, one of the Enterprise engine room sets, "and more!") and a "giant letters against black" variant cover designed by a middle schooler

Target
Exclusiveness: $30 (3D is $35) edition that has 30 minutes not found on the Best Buy edition, a more colorful variant cover

Amazon
Exclusiveness: $80 3D edition that is the same regular 3D version, but with a phaser prop replica

iTunes
Exclusiveness: $20 "HD" package (a total of around 6GB at 1080p resolution) that is the Digital Copy otherwise included on all versions of the Blu-ray, which apparently includes the only way to watch a Picture-in-Picture-style integrated commentary as part of the iTunes Extras

I totally agree with Ralph on this one except on the moviescore, I would give it 4,5. smile.gif

The audio and video on this on is reference quality and I really enjoyed this film and will watch it many times in the months coming.

Andreas

Greetings,

Yes, it could have gone either way I suppose. The good thing is that in either case we can agree that it's a fun ride...smile.gif

Thanks for your detailed and timely review Ralph. The truth is, I don't know what gene someone has to be missing to be indifferent to well-executed 3D like this. It can be such a fun ride. I feel bad for the viewers -- and there are clearly a bunch of them -- that simply have no interest in 3D. That's just a head-scratcher for me. Oh well, to each their own. At least they have the superb 2D and audio quality that you describe here to look forward to.

One of the worst films this year.
I'm not talking about the fact that it is a recycled story, and as a writer if the setting is in an alternate universe it should be a new concept and story line.
I'm not even talking about the plethora of plot holes, or the terrible set design that continued from the first movie.
I'm talking about the terrible acting and the lack of enthusiasm on the actor's behalf.
The only redeeming quality was of this movie was Benedict Cumberbatch.

I'm going to jump in to the fire alongside Exist_To_Resist and state that while Star Trek Into Darkness is a reasonable science fiction movie, it's a terrible Star Trek movie.

The writers play WAY too long and loose with the relative distances and travel times between very important story-universe landmarks: 20 minutes between Earth and Kronos? Ridiculous. If these two species are such mortal enemies then there would be no way to adequately defend against such an enemy of such proximity. You don't have to be a Star Trek historian to realise the foolishness of this choice.

Beaming between two planets in different stellar systems is end-game weapons technology. Why do you need ships when you can just beam nukes into your enemy's backyard? That plot mechanic immediately took me out of the movie experience.

Take every.single.last.experimental.torpedo with you on a mission to take out a single man for which even one torpedo would be overkill? rolleyes.gif Seriously.

Chris Pine never seemed to find his acting stride through the whole movie, he was either overplaying the moment or appeared bored.

This new take on Star Trek frustrates me.

I watched ST 2009 for the first time last night and although it took some getting used too, I found many references to the Star Trek I remember so well. I embraced it and looking forward to into darkness. I don't expect everyone will see this the same way as I do and I admit I'm not hard to please when it comes to sci fi, I don't expect things to be perfect, just reasonable. The fact that this is going to be "reference" AV is a big plus to me and I expect the huge soundtrack others have talked about and to me that's like half of the whole experience. I'm sure I won't be able to wipe the smile from my face, and you all know the feeling when the time put into and the money spent pays off smile.gif

I agree there are plot holes, but I'm OK with that because I though the movie was entertaining and fun. I'm curious where they go from here.

I really enjoy this film, plot holes and all...I've been revisiting the TOS on Netfix of lately, with child like enthusiasm! Giddy that's what I feel when clicking on the next episode, and this film makes me feel the same way when watching it in the Imax smile.gif Fun, fun, fun....:)Can't wait to get my hands o a bd copy...

Thanks Ralph excellent review.

Looking forward to this and thankfully the BD presentation will be lightyears ahead of my sub-par sound quality experience at my local cinema.
