"Hiring them was a brilliant mistake"

Film Synopsis:

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson team up to crash the digital world in this laugh-out-loud buddy comedy you’ve been searching for! Trying to reboot their obsolete careers, old-school salesmen Billy (Vaughn) and Nick (Wilson) talk their way into an internship program at the state-of-the-art Google campus, vying for a handful of spots among tech-savvy college students who are half their age and twice as smart. The competition is fiercely funny as Billy and Nick break all the rules in a hilarious quest to land their dream jobs!

My Take:

I typically enjoy watching funnymen Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. Their onscreen chemistry and fun repertoire generally prove entertaining especially if you get a kick out of their shtick. Co-written by Vince Vaughn this is essentially paint by the numbers filmmaking that revolves around a pair of salesmen put out of work who seek an internship for a chance at employment with the technologically advanced Google. Initially they struggle to meet the challenges associated with their lack of computer/internet age savvy but when paired with a group of technically proficient but socially challenged “misfits” they all manage to gel taking pages from the books of the other. Included, are the requisite romantic subplot and low level drama each play out in metronome like fashion in support of the formulaic proceedings.

The internship is light comedy with a warmhearted center that relies heavily on the charisma of its stars. Aiming a little too high for the conventional, rousing success story with a charming comedic flavor it winds up feeling more rehashed than rewardingly flavorful. Despite it’s shortcomings I still enjoyed it for what it was due mostly to my affinity for Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. In that respect fans will probably get more out of it than casual viewers. Both the theatrical version and unrated cut, which I watched, are included (which is always welcomed) the latter adds roughly five minutes to the theatrical cuts runtime.

Parental Guide:

The film contains sexuality, some crude humor, partial nudity, partying and language.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:

**My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc.**

The internship comes to Blu-ray Disc from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.1 Mbps.

This high definition video presentation from Warner is consistent with most newer release films coming to Blu-ray and looks great. Colors are bright, with vivid primaries, and deep saturation which makes them visually pleasing. Contrast and brightness are nicely balanced which adds punch to colors and brightly lit scenes while keeping darker elements dynamic and gradational. Complexions appear rich in tonal delineation with natural highlights that look excellent in high definition. Images are crisp with stable sharpness and appreciable definition that renders plenty of subtle texture within the objects and people onscreen.

The lossless audio presentation is quite good and delivers the source elements with high level detail and punchy dynamics. Dialogue is appropriately prioritized and is reproduced with excellent tonal variation and clarity through the center channel. The surrounds are active at times and used for venue replicating atmosphere and musical ambience. The mix isn’t especially engaging but based upon the source material I had no issues with it and thought it sounded fine.

Bonus Features:

  • Unrated & Theatrical version

  • (HD) 8 deleted scenes

  • (HD) Any given Monday – 17 minute featurette

  • Director commentary (theatrical version)

  • (HD) Theatrical trailer

  • Bonus DVD

  • Ultraviolet Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

The internship is a paint by the numbers comedy that re-teams the entertaining duo of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Co-written by Vaughn is a middling effort with a warmhearted center that will likely appeal more to Vaughn/Wilson fans. It comes to Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment featuring an excellent overall high definition presentation and a below average supplemental offering. If you’re typically drawn to the comedic antics of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson this is worth checking out.

paint by numbers, yes. But still really enjoyable, especially the unrated cut.

I have a close relative who works at Google, so this was especially interesting for me.
