"Two the hard way…"

Film Synopsis:

When an attempt to take down a drug cartel blows up in their faces, two undercover operatives are forced to go on the run together, though neither knows that the other is a federal agent. Suddenly, everyone on both sides of the law wants them dead, and their only hope is to trust each other.

My Take:

If you saw the trailer for 2 guns you essentially get the gist of what it’s about. Based on BOOM! Studios graphic novels by Steven Grant, it’s a formulaic buddy action/shoot ‘em up with a lightly comedic undertone and a straight forward plot containing one or two twists that only the greenest of genre fans won’t see coming. The film’s best moments feature the interplay between stars Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington although supporting players Bill Paxton and Edward James Olmos make the most out of their screen time. Honorable mention goes out to sexy Paula Patton who has been a personal favorite since I first saw her in Déjà vu (with Denzel). I have seen her in Swing vote, Mirrors, Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol and now this. She is a competent actress that exudes just the right amount of sex appeal and onscreen allure. Here she only has a few scenes but two of them might just make the film worth owning (if you find her attractive). Sorry, got off on a tangent there.

Formulaic or not 2 guns is a fun bit of escapism that features decent action set pieces, conventionally apropos characters, edgy violence and a serviceable script. It plays a little longer at 110 minutes than it should but boredom isn’t an issue. It would be fair to say that I liked it and consider it to be disposable but worthwhile popcorn entertainment.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for violence throughout, language and brief nudity.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

2 Guns comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 30 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.8 Mbps.

This is a high quality video presentation that seems a perfect match for the source material. Colors are deeply saturated with eye pleasing vitality and delineated depth. Resolution is discerning during close up camera shots of the cast revealing detail in the visible lines in their faces and the weave and texture of their clothing. Wide angle pans of the sun splashed landscapes and stone structures/buildings have excellent depth, with refining image quality. There are instances where sharpness wavers but they are brief and appear innate to the photography. Contrast is dynamically applied and blacks are respectable in depth with discernible detail in low lighting and shadows. Film grain is present and gives the majority of the presentation a noticeably filmic texture that is never intrusive. I didn’t see any signs of video related artifacts and thought that in general video quality was solid.

The DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for 2 Guns is a good one that makes excellent use of the entire system platform. Dialogue has definitive presence with refined vocal character and excellent room penetration. Dynamic range is excellent which lends subtle distinction to low level sounds and gravity to broader ones. This is a fairly active surround mix that employ’s the subwoofer and rear channels in order to better draw you into the action. This creates a believable and enveloping sound field that replicates the film’s various interior/exterior environments while perfectly mating with on the onscreen elements. Low frequency effects have substantial weight and presence that occasionally fill the room with deep, punctuated bass.

Bonus Features:

  • Exclusive:(HD) The good, the bad and the sexy – 8 minute cast featurette

  • Exclusive:(HD) Finding the vibe – 7 minute production featurette

  • Exclusive:(HD) Living dangerously – 9 minute action/FX featurette

  • (HD) 8 Deleted/extended scenes

  • (HD) Undercover and into action – 6 minute featurette

  • Bonus DVD

  • Ultraviolet Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

Based on BOOM! Studios graphic novels by Steven Grant, it’s a formulaic buddy action/shoot ‘em up with a lightly comedic undertone and a straight forward plot that benefits from the charisma of its two stars in Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington. Universal Studios Home Entertainment brings it to Blu-ray in a fan friendly offering that features an excellent audio/video presentation combined with a fair bonus supplement package that includes format exclusive content. It would be fair to say that I enjoyed it and consider it to be disposable but worthwhile popcorn entertainment. Give it a rent.

I thought it was a fun popcorn film. Will probably buy the BD.

No subwoofer I've heard has been able to produce the bass I've experienced in the Corps!

Must..stop...buying...every bluray release...

Pre-ordered this BD as well, a few friends saw it and really enjoyed it - looks like a good fit to spend a couple hours enjoying the sites and sounds of the home theater.

I will buy this for Paula Patton alone. She was drop dead gorgeous in Ghost Protocol. I have also really enjoyed many of Marky Marks' movies in the past, so I don't think this one will dissapoint.

I really struggle to believe some people felt Paula Patton gave an even okay performance in this film. It isn't entirely her fault as the character is really little more then a plot device, though most of the time she simply looked constipated or something similar to that. I can guess what emotions she was trying to display but beyond that all I can say is dreadful. With that being said Movie 42 did happen so she is at no risk of a razzie.

For me the film was okay but overstayed its welcome.

@FilmReverie

Have to agree. But not only Paula looked a little lost, Mark Wahlberg's acting was also below my expectations. For us (my wife and I) the movie was ok. We will never watch it again and probably don't remember it in a not too far future.

Thanks for the review Ralph!

Call me crazy but I don't see the appeal to Paula Patton.

Just kidding. I think she's a very beautiful lady.

I was interested in seeing this when it was in the theaters. Wahlberg has decent comedic timing and I can't say no to a stylized action flick with tons of gun play and things blowing up. I do feel Denzel has gotten into a comfort zone where he plays the same guy all the time but as long as that character is entertaining, I'm game!

I wouldn't say he was bad like I would Paula, but all the main actors and actresses aside from Bill Paxton seemed to be just phoning in there performances.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
In all fairness to Paula, I think she may have had no idea what here characters motivations where beyond getting rich as really there wasn't anything more to her character. I guess she could have played it as a cold individual (think Cameron Diaz in the Counselor) but at the same time the film obviously wanted you to empathize with her. Basically I blame the script more then I blame the actress. Still she didn't make good at all in the dire situation she put herself in.

I will buy any movie that Denzel Washington is in. This man is a great supporter of the boys club of America as well as supporting Vets. He went to a burn center at a military hospital to see some vets and donated a million dollars. This man is a class act. Never wants the limelight.
