"Get in. Get out. Getaway"

Film Synopsis:

Former race car driver Brent Magna (Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, taking it and its unwitting owner (Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage.

My Take:

Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) is a burned out race car driver who is thrust into a do-or-die mission behind the wheel when his wife is kidnapped. With Brent's only ally being a young hacker (Selena Gomez), his one hope of saving his wife is to follow the orders of the mysterious voice (Jon Voight) who's watching his every move through cameras mounted on the car Brent's driving.

The trailer for Getaway didn’t look the least bit interesting but hey I’ll give any movie featuring a Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake a shot. After 90 minutes of frenetically paced, repetitious car chases, built around a hollow script that features zero character development and no suspense it would be fair to say that this was worse than I thought. Let’s add a helping of terrible acting from Selena Gomez whose potty mouthed dialogue and cheesy delivery detracted at every turn. The film features loads of quick edits and the use of multiple deck/dash/bumper mounted cameras that take the shaky cam genre to a new level. I got a chuckle out of the formulaic plot which purported to be “Gone is 60 seconds” meets “Speed” meets “Diehard with a vengeance”. Of course it didn’t amount to anything more than an uninspired mash-up that didn’t have enough depth to entertain even at a base level.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for intense action, violence and mayhem throughout, some rude gestures and language.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Getaway comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 4.4 Mbps.

Due to the nature of the photography this video presentation has an uneven but filmic quality that doesn’t lend itself to bright, high gloss imagery, and the color palette isn’t a diverse one and sticks primarily to de-saturated neutral tones that render a cooler appearance that mates well with the subject matter. Flesh tones fit right in with the visual style of the video and offer little in the way of complexional variation. Contrast is spot on and black levels range from punchy to elevated which washes some scenes out. The film uses lots of low light interior and exterior scenes. Detail in backgrounds and staggered lighting is revealing of varying levels of delineation that can be scene dependent. Resolution is stable with appreciable fine rendering during close ups and less definitive long range visuals that offered two dimensional depth.

The is a rip roaring DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack that features crystal clear dialogue, powerful dynamics and a fairly aggressive surround sound mix. I was impressed with the implementation of both spacial dimension and discrete directional sounds that created an immersive listening environment. This worked hand in hand with film’s music, and thematic elements to help drive (pun intended) the story. The growl of the Shelby’s engine and punch of the various car crashes, explosions and a very nice low frequency burst during the power station sequence hits hard and sounds awesome. Be sure to turn this one up and enjoy the ride.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Crash cams – 1 minute feature

  • (HD) Destroying a custom Shelby – 1 minute feature

  • (HD) Metal & asphalt – 1 minute feature

  • (HD) Selena Gomez on set – 1 minute feature

  • (HD) The train set – 1 minute feature

  • Ultraviolet Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

Getaway is a poorly conceived car chase/crime thriller that features a frenetically paced and repetitious screenplay that never gets off of the ground. It comes to Blu-ray from Warner Brother Home Entertainment featuring solid technical merits and an abysmal supplement offering that consists of a handful of brief production features. If you’re a car fan this might be worth checking out to the various stunts/driving involving the Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake. Other than that Getaway is a pass.

With all the toe dipping and hedging, I am a bit unsure how you feel about the film.

Greetings,

Hadn't thought about that although much of what makes them best vs. worst in terms of content is subjective..wink.gif

Great food for thought!

Now now let's not be unkind especially when to be fair, the studios that Lee covers (with the exception of Anchor Bay) tends to release in limited quantity + plus more Indie scale flicks. He did cover Django, Evil Dead and Silver Linings Playbook, the two latter of which are going to be added to the honorable mention lists in this top for 2013.

So an actor and actress I normally find annoying, delivering a bland performance of a bland run of the mill script with the only ameliorating object being the Shelby, of which I can find pictures of off the Internet...

Thank's Ralph I think I'l just dig Drive out of my box of dvd's instead.

I'm surprised Ralph didn't mention the power plant scene that nearly shook everything in the room. I mostly enjoyed the audio for those pretty deep ULF sweeps.

holy crap...there is some serious LFE going on in here.

and yes, the POWER PLANT SCENE - I recorded the HSU three times during this scene

Was not expecting this at all, rent it for that scene by itself there are others. The movie...well it took some effort to make it I guess.
