The last seen was very gripping IMO, I agree.

Received my rental copy from Netflix and was pleasantly surprised when the movie started my Sharp 857 TV went into XV Color Mode using Panasonic BDT330 as player. I had not expected the Panasonic player to support the XV color profile since I thought it was exclusive to Sony Blu Ray players previously was using Sonly BX510. The image was stunning

Watched this today while running about ten miles (on Wii Fit U). It's hard to gauge the quality of the disc (video and audio) while running, but I have to give Tom Hanks props for a great performance. As well, the Somali pirates did a credible job, though I think it's easier to be a credible bad-ass than a credible survivor, and Hanks really delivered, especially in the last 20 minutes.

I'll be watching it again in sit down mode so I can appreciate the technical merits of the film as well. smile.gif

What I can afford, when I can afford it...

Am I the only one who thought several of the dark scenes had a terrible amount of noise in them? I'm watching on a Sony HW30 which has a correctly calibrated black level and other content looks great...

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned.

Barkhad Abdi is an American, brought to the U.S. by his parents from Somali as a youth and is outstandingly cast and subtle and brilliant as Muse the pirate. Tom Hands is humanly terrific as always. His emotional final scenes were shot with a real U.S. navy nurse, not an actress. The film was shot on real ships and lifeboats. This added greatly to the "fly on the wall" effect that Ralph aptly describes. It's not too long, I was sorry to see it end. Great review of a wonderful movie!

One small but important correction:

NOT a Navy Nurse.

I'm with you on this one.  Some of the dark scenes in the engine room and life boat looked sub-par when considering the excellent quality of the rest of the film.

I find your lack of schadenfreude disturbing.

Great movie. Watched it Sat. night with the wife.

A well done movie that got really good towards the end.

Hanks was great as he usually was.

Thanks for the review on this one Mr. Ralph. It was spot on.

Watched it last night, itunes rental on apple TV. Looked very good, the film score was great. I agree with noticeable picture noise in the engine room scenes. The last 5 minutes when Tommy Hanks is in shock about what just happened brought a tear to my eye. Not so much about the situation but more so the brilliance of him as an actor.

Finally watched this last night with my wife as she had me go rent it for a movie night. Figured it wld b pretty good as I always love Tom Hanks but Wow we absolutely loved it!! What an incredibly well made movie!! The acting was top notch as was its ability to keel you in suspense the entire time! We felt for the crew and it was gripping. The audio was fantastic! Used to create tension and angst and it worked perfectly while creating such a 3d dynamic blanket of effects. It was truly an excellent experience and for 2 hrs I forgot I where I was and was transported into the film. It's the goal of every film and Captain P nailed it!! Ralph thanks again everything you said was spot on and mirrors my experience.

Edit: just had to add that Tom Hanks is without a doubt one of the best! The up and comer who played the Simali pirate was brilliant too he had me scared for the crew.

I'm right there with people on the noise. Seemed a lot of those darker shots were VERY noisy on my setup.

The movie itself was great but the image quality took a lot away for me

Thanks for the review Ralph. I'd seen the trailers and knew about the movie, but my interest in watching it wasn't too high. Your review definitely got me interested though, and I'm glad I rented it. Quite enjoyable all around, though for my personal preferences, probably not that much replayability so renting was the right choice.

Great movie for sure!

As for repeated viewing value, I watched it a second time, but with the wife this time around, and enjoyed it a bit more than the first time. Probably won't be watching it again for a while now.

Thanks for the review Ralph. I was planning to skip on this one but your review made me pull the trigger... cool.gif

Great movie. The only beef I have is the pace of the final resolution could hasten up a little. Thanks, Ralph for the great review.

The audio is the best I have heard in a long time, two big thumbs up.

Great flick! Just finally got around to watching it. Tom Hanks best performance in a very long time! The ending had me all choked up, which quite frankly, does not happen very much at all! This movie had me glued to my seat and really engaged. A huge thumbs up biggrin.gif

Entertaining movie for sure, but I have to agree with a couple other reviews on here regarding the picture quality on the engine room scenes.  I just bought a brand new Samsung UN60H7100 TV and was freaking out when the graininess made those scenes so distracting it was almost unwatchable.  Here's a picture taken with my phone.  It's more pronounced when it's paused but definitely still very distracting.

I thought for sure the TV was a dud and I would be returning it.  I've since popped in a couple other Blu-rays and have not seen the same grainy issues so I can only assume it's that specific movie.

But the movie is good and has some intense moments, especially in context that this was based on true events.
