"Fast food"

Film Synopsis:

In the wake of the disastrous food storm at the end of the first movie, Flint Lockwood and friends are forced to leave their town of Swallow Falls. But when it is discovered that sentient food beasts have overrun the island, they are asked to return to save the world…again.

My Take:

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 picks up where Cloudy with a chance of meatballs left off. Inventor Flint Lockwood's genius is finally being recognized as he's invited by his idol Chester V to join The Live Corp Company, where the best and brightest inventors in the world create technologies for the betterment of mankind. Chester's right-hand-gal - and one of his greatest inventions - is Barb (a highly evolved orangutan with a human brain, who is also devious, manipulative and likes to wear lipstick). It's always been Flint's dream to be recognized as a great inventor, but everything changes when he discovers that his most infamous machine (which turns water into food) is still operating and is now creating food-animal hybrids - "foodimals!" With the fate of humanity in his hands, Chester sends Flint and his friends on a dangerously delicious mission, battling hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, apple pie-thons, double bacon cheespiders and other food creatures in order to prevent them from overrunning the world.

I enjoyed Cloudy with a chance of meatballs which is based on the on the book by Judi and Ron Barrett. This follow up is inspired by the book and brings the characters back in similar light hearted family fashion that takes Flint Lockwood and company on an adventurous mission. The dialogue and situations aren’t as cleverly integrated in the story’s formulaic premise but there is ample support from a thematic standpoint, especially for young audiences. Frankly I found the first act to be slow moving and uninspired however once the gang arrives back on the island of Swallow Falls things pick up. What I found to be the most fun were the various “Foodimals” which are “food” animals inspired by real insects, animals and different types of food. Like its predecessor, this isn’t emotionally stirring but infuses humorous slapstick, positive messages and an abundance of colorful characters. I liked the cast and appreciated each actor’s contribution which complimented the film.

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 isn’t as rewardingly balanced a film as Cloudy with a chance of meatballs but manages to muster enough heart along with a few chuckles to make for an entertaining viewing experience on family movie night.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for brief mild rude humor.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

**My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc.**

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 3D comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 1080p MVC encoded video and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.3 Mbps.

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 is a native 3D film that positively translates to Blu-ray via this sparkling high definition presentation. Detail is well preserved as the image retains its high level of clarity as objects within the frame are delineated and sharp. Depth is appreciable as evidenced by the notable separation of objects and or characters within the frame which serves to create a discerning sense of virtual space occupied by things of various sizes and shapes. There are a variety of sequences that provide a fun reach out and touch sense of dimensionality. Comparing color reproduction to the 2D presentation I saw no discernible difference. The rendering of detail, contrast and black levels is similar with both looking equally good. I recently moved to a new 3D projector and saw no signs of Ghosting/crosstalk throughout this presentation. Cloudy with a chance of meatballs makes for an entertaining 3D film experience.

The DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack makes excellent use of the entire surround platform and offers detail rich sonic clarity, crystalline dialogue and authoritative bass. This mix doesn’t bombard you with constantly aggressive surround sound. It applies it when appropriate and combines discretely placed directional cues with rear channel ambience that fills the listening area nicely. The front and rear sound field’s never collide but work in unison to render the recorded elements with discernible imaging and correlative acoustic placement. Dynamic’s are solid but not quite up to the level of the best lossless encodings that I have heard. The LFE channel is actively engaged and offers bass response that is punchy and clean. This is a well rounded overall presentation that compliments the source material quite nicely.

2D Video Quality:

Video: 100

  • Resolution/Clarity: attachment.php?attachmentid=109948&d=1210373699

  • Black level/Shadow detail: attachment.php?attachmentid=109948&d=1210373699

  • Color reproduction: attachment.php?attachmentid=109948&d=1210373699

  • Compression: attachment.php?attachmentid=109948&d=1210373699

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 27 Mbps.

This is a superlative video presentation that boasts vivacious colors that are rich in saturation and bold in depth. Detail is rendered with aplomb as the video has excellent dimensional quality with crisp texture and fine articulation. Contrast is strong and well balanced so that whites are crisp and colors pop without distortion or loss of detail. Blacks are deep with excellent dynamic and gradational highlights. This is a pristine quality digital transfer that looks stunning.

Bonus Features:

  • Disc 1:

Final Thoughts:

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 is the follow up to 2009’s Cloudy with a chance of meatballs and brings the characters back in similar light hearted family fashion that takes Flint Lockwood and company on an adventurous mission. While not as rewardingly balanced as its predecessor it musters enough heart along with a few chuckles to make for an entertaining viewing experience on family movie night. It comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in this three disc package that features top notch 3D and 2D high definition video presentations, engaging DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio surround sound and a decent supplemental offering that has a little bit for both young and adult fans. If you enjoyed the first film Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 is worth checking out so toss it in your rental queue and take it for a spin on Blu-ray.

Going to pick this movie up next week.

How are you liking the 3D on the 4910 Ralph? I'm considering this projector as well.

4 stars for beyond the screen? I thought this movie had the most and best pop out of the screen effect of all 3D movies I have seen; and I have seen a lot. I think when determining how much pop out effect there is, it is best to view in a lit (not fully) room. I find that in a completely dark room the border around the screen and what is behind the screen gets lost making relative comparrisons difficult and less pronounced.

I can totally see why MR T wanted to have nothing to do with this sequel. I finally saw it tonight and enjoyed the first 1 alot more than this one. This 1 was just kinda lifeless and droll. Whereas the first one was lively, comical, and very original. Felt like a total money grab. mad.gif

Got this bundle over the weekend 'cause my youngest (5-soon-to-be-6) loved it at the theater (and begged!). Haven't seen it 3D--theater showing was 2D--but am looking forward to it and will report back once I do (borderline reference 3D seals it, BTW)! As a movie, the first one is way better, I agree, but I get a real kick out of those few precious moments I can sit next to a family member while they enjoy "their" movies! Thanks, Ralph! cool.gif

I actually do like it, Frank! Thanks for chimin' in, compadre! Best part for me, though, is the end credits... just love 'em! Too bad good ol' Mr. T ain't in this one, eh? Last night my kid had finished watching part 1 and I couldn't resist replaying it for myself after work. Put on the (passive) glasses and sat back and just chuckled away silly, especially at Mr. T's contribution to it! Only watched an hour 'cause the hard day got the better of me and so I hit the sack. I'll probly be watching the remaining half hour tonight and maybe I'll throw in part 2 right after that... I'm thinking I might end up enjoying it even more viewing it 3D... cool.gif

Mr T was awesome in number 1. I loved the way his character was very protective of his son and he loved him very much. smile.gif ( I think were all like that at times smile.gif )

Saw it 3D and I have to say it elevates the experience...looks (and sounds) great! cool.gif

I guess there's no reason why a company with a name such as "Sony Pictures Animation" would purposefully produce bad 3D. By now everybody who is anybody in the movie industry is fully capable of bringing out high quality 3D (and audio), which is great news for us 3D (and HT) advocates... smile.gif
