"There's a little of him in all of us"
"The world's favourite adventurer is back for more! much more!"

Film Synopsis:

I- An American reporter goes to the Australian outback to meet an eccentric crocodile poacher and invites him to New York City.

II- Australian outback expert protects his New York love from gangsters who've followed her down under.

My Take:

Let me get this out of my system. AC/DC Kangaroo Outback Marsupial Kylie Minogue Mad Max Yahoo Serious Fosters Mel Gibson INXS.
Wait I forgot Crocodile Dundee, the surprise Australian comedy hit of 1986. Some facts for ya'll- Croc grossed 175mil and was the number two highest grossing film in 1986, just 5mil shy of Top Gun. It beat out such hits as Platoon, Aliens and even Ferris Bueller. I remember seeing it in the theaters a few times when I was 11, of course I remember the iconic line "That's not a knife.THAT's a knife.", and I remember having a crush on the films female lead, Linda Kozlowski. Not having seen it in 25 years, I couldn't remember if it really was any good. I threw it on with my son and was pleasantly surprised that Crocodile Dundee was a silly, fun and endearing comedy that still holds plenty of charm thanks to its star Paul Hogan.

Crocodile Dundee is the story of Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee, who is an is an Australian safari owner. After famously surviving a crocodile attack, which is blown humorously out of proportion, Sue (Linda Kozlowski) a reporter from NYC on assignment in Australia, decides to add in an interview with him. After a tour of the outback and some great scenery, Dundee ironically saves Sue from a crocodile and they strike up a bit of a personal rapport. She invites him to New York and the film turns into a fish-out-of-water comedy and love story that is always well paced, full of humor and better that it really ought to be. A note for parents, the film had a bit more off color language then I recalled, pushing the limits for my 7 year old.

Crocodile Dundee II continues the story a year later when Sue receives evidence with the image of an drug lord. The cartel comes for her and she and Dundee decide to hide-out in his homeland of the Australian outback. With the bad guys following, Dundee gets to show his skills and knowledge of the land in his fight against them. I found the sequel to be as fun as the first and a bit more kid friendly as it didn't have the light profanity of the original. The New York location started to run a bit thin but when we got back to the outback the film breathed new life and was just as enjoyable as the original.

Crocodile Dundee I & II comes to Blu-ray disc from Paramount featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 21.2 mbps and DTS-MA HD 2.0 & DTS-MA HD 5.1 sound .

Both Crocodile Dundee films had similar looks and are combined here for scoring purposes. The image is over-all pleasing enough as it has a filmic look, but it is a bit softer than we like in a HD transfer. Some dirt and scratching on the source shows that not too much love was put into transferring these babies over to Blu-ray. Black levels are this one Achilles heel as shadow details are crushed and nigh-time scenes really suffer. Color is generally pleasing and I saw no instances of compression artifacts. The audio tracks fair better and are surprising similar, though one is 2.0 and the other 5.1. The stereo track for the first film is more dynamic and has a better feeling sound-stage then I could imagine. It rivals the 5.1 of the second film but lacks it lower end and slightly more dimensional feel. Both are solid and engaging.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Crocodile Dundee Trailer

  • Final Thoughts:

Crocodile Dundee is still charming, fun, exciting and worth the revisit. For fans it is worth a purchase as the two moves are a good value and can be found for under $20. The downsize is its OK video quality and non existent special features (well a trailer really doesn't count). I recommend a rental for those who have yet to see it. Cheers, Mates!

I remember Crocodile Dundee being one of, if not the first pre-recorded VHS movies priced for consumer purchase, rather than priced for rental...

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable.

good to hear that it still holds up. I'll watch this with my kids to see what they think. movies like flight of the navigator were amazing as a kid and just as great now but the neverending story has great memories for me but was horrible when I rewatched it.

plus we are big Crocodile Hunter fans so I hope they will enjoy this as well

Count me in the group of people that wishes he could unwatch that third one. Not like it was totally unacceptable, but it left me feeling similarly to the way I felt after I finished the 4th Indiana Jones....

I just recently watched both of these on DVD, I hadn't seen either of them in a good long while. I have the third one but I've yet to watch it.

This line intentionally left blank.
