Non-Stop (Blu-ray) Official AVSForum Review

Check out our review of this high altitude thriller starring Liam Neeson.

The Review at a Glance: (max score: 5 )Film: Extras: Audio/Video total rating:( Max score: 100 )91Studio and Year: Universal Studios- 2014MPAA Rating: PG-13Feature running time: 106 MinutesGenre: Action, ThrillerDisc Format: BD-50Encoding: AVC (MPEG-4)Video Aspect: 2.40:1Resolution: 1080p/24Audio Format(s): DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1Subtitles: English SDH, Spanish, FrenchStarring: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Scoot McNairy, Lupita Nyong'oDirected by: Jaume Collet-SerraMusic by: John OttmanWritten by: John W. Richardson, Christopher Roach, Ryan EngleRegion Code: ABlu-ray Disc release Date: June 10th, 2014
"The Hijacking Was Just the Beginning."
Film Synopsis:An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account. My Take:Going into Non-Stop, I was thinking I was getting Die Hard on a plane. The plot is of the burned out alcoholic Air Marshall Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) on a flight from New York to London. Once settled in on the flight sitting next to a random passenger played by Julianne Moore, he receives a text on his "secure" line saying a passenger will die ever 20 minutes unless 150 million is transferred into a bank account. While trying to sort things with the other on board Air Marshall, things go really south and Marks ends up shooting him at what turns out to be the first 20 minute mark. Oh and the intrigue begins...What started off like I feared took a twist that brought the film into a sort-of who done it, with the perps doing everything they can to try to frame Marks. After an hour that keeps coming and coming with twists that go from clever to way too over-cooked, it becomes clear that what was intended to be almost "Hitchcockian" is merely a claustrophobic action film that is trying too hard for its own good. If you put on Non-Stop expecting to be bombarded with implausible plot points, an interesting story with a let down of a conclusion, and an overdose of the stoic Liam Neeson we have come to know and expect, you just might be happy with this as a Friday night popcorn flick. I ended up enjoying it, warts and all, thanks to decent turns by the supporting cast, great use of the limited location of the plane and very nice 35mm cinematography.Parental Guide:Intense sequences of action and violence, some language, sensuality and drug referencesAUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65**My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc.**(Each rating is worth 4 points with a max of 5 per category)Audio: 94

Non-Stop comes to Blu-ray disc from Universal Studios featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 31 mbps and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound with an average bitrate of 3.8 mbps.Non-Stop was filmed in 35mm and was a breath of fresh air after my last review of a digitally lensed movie. This looks like film with a nice layer of grain, showing no DNR to smooth it away. Rich blacks and finely rendered details all over, while colors are generally pleasing considering the sterile imagery found inside a plane.. The big surprise here was the audio track as it played tight and confined, invoking the claustrophobia of being stuck in a plane, but knew when to open up with aplomb and kick its LFE and dynamics into high gear. Dialogue was always crisp and upfront and the films music was in your face but never too over bearing.Bonus Features:
  • (HD) Featurette: Non-Stop Action (5 min)
  • (HD) Featurette: Suspense at 40,000 Feet (8 min)
  • (HD) UV Digital Copy
  • DVD Disc
Final Thoughts:If you take this flight with reserved expectations and realize that it is merely a popcorn flick in disguise, you will get the most out of Non-Stop. With good acting, cinematography, and a great transfer with superlative audio, I enjoyed giving it a spin and can suggest a rental. Fans can be happy with great A/V, however, might be disappointed with two very short featurettes as the only bonus features included.Lee WeberAVS Forum Blu-ray ReviewsReference Review System:JVC DLA-RS4910 3D 1080p 3D High Definition Front ProjectorScreen Innovations Gamma Maestro 4K 1.1 138" 2.35:1 Acoustically Transparent CinemaScope ScreenDa-Lite Pro Imager Projector Screen Masking SystemOnkyo PR-SC5509 Pre/ProParasound Halo A51 & A21 7x250Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray Player (HDMI Audio/Video)Triad Gold LCR'sTriad Silver Surrounds x4Triad Bronze Subwoofers x4Panamorph DC1 Anamorphic LensAudioQuest WiresPanasonic TC-P65ZT60 3D 1080p PlasmaURC DMS-AV ReceiverSony BDP-S790 Blu-ray Player (HDMI Audio/Video)MKSound MP-7 LCR'sMKSound SUR-55T SurroundsTriad Bronze Subwoofer

This was a great movie. Not even mindless entertainment. There is one part that no movie should ever screw up (a physics-based issue), but the rest was very good. I think I want to buy this one.

I'll never watch it again, but it was much better than expected. Worth a one time viewing.

I ordered it from Amazon and will watch it more than once. I'm all about mindless action movies so apparently this fits the bill.

One of the advantage of getting older is if I wait long enough to re-watch this film, I will only remember a small part of it biggrin.gif

Isn't that the truth? Sometimes I forget I already ordered something on Amazon, so I buy it at Target, then I watch it, then the Amazon purchase arrives, and I'm like, "Hey, look, a new movie!"

What I can afford, when I can afford it...

I also enjoyed this- no classic but a fun little flick all the same elevated into watchable territory by the always excellent Liam Neeson.

Great pop-corn flix but once is enough for me. Most action films these days really do't have much a script., never mind about coherence.

Watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll give it a couple of weeks and watch it again.
