I don't think there is an ATMOS track on Noah.

Since Ralph has an 11.2 system, I wonder if he listens to tracks with DTS Neo X upmixed to 9.2 or 11.2, etc? Or just DTS MA?

There are more than a handful of [op amps] that sound so good that most designers want to be using them as opposed to discreet transistors. Dave Reich, Theta 2009

Thanks!

Greetings,

Hey Jeff, I use a 9.2 configuration with front wide channels derived using DTS Neo:X processing. I almost always go back and listen to select parts of a track with no applied processing to see if I notice a distinct difference in the presentation.

Low frequency extension for this film is blasphemously absent.

Was that THE Jennifer Connolly of Rocketeer fame? She’d have been able to help keep that boat afloat in the event divine intervention failed.

For those contemplating the iTunes version, they just corrected their release and the movie is now correctly in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

The Video looked good, but the cartoon sky and those horribly rendered rock creatures made me wish it did not look so sharp. I thought the Audio was very good, clean dialogue but could of used a bit more low end sound. The story clearly does not follow the Bible writings but heck they are both made up stories anyway, and who would know what a 600 year old man building an ark would look like. I wish I look as good as Russell Crowe does in this movie when I get to be 600 years old. Oh yeah and in this version at least the woman have names.

Overall I found this movie to be a good rental, but would not recommend a blind buy on it.

Okay, just finished watching it and enjoyed this movie quite a bit. The audio and video were quite good, and while Jennifer Connelly is finally starting to show some signs of aging, she has proven once again that she can act. Emma Watson's acting skills are maturing as well. I'll be watching this one again this coming weekend, but this time with my wife, so we'll see what she thinks of it. I do agree with the others above that the "watchers" were probably the weakest link in the movie, but if I were to get into a battle with someone, I'd like to have them on my side.

Thanks again, Ralph!

The general thinking is that the director and DP sketch out the movie prior to shooting using storyboards (or in motion with previz), and they already know in advance what specific shots will be needed for most of the entire script. Decisions get made as to whether height is the priority (like for an intimate human drama) or if width is the priority (like for many scenes with horizontal chases or broad horizons).

What's typically done nowadays is that they shoot in either 1.33 flat or 1.78 flat and then mask off to get the desired aspect ratio. I have yet to work on a film in the last ten years where we haven't moved around at least 100 shots, sometimes more, sometimes dynamically. We can't do that nearly as easily if it's 2.40 anamorphic, which is one reason that's falling out of favor.

I think it's a rare film that really needs 2.40 nowadays, and I honestly think 1.85 is more appropriate for many kinds of stories. I don't have a problem with 2.40 for big action films, car chases, Westerns, and stuff like that, but I'm generally not a fan of romantic comedies and stuff like that in 2.40.

I believe Noah was shot on the Arri Alexa in 1.78, with some slo-mo shots done in 35mm film. The film was color-corrected by Jason Fabbro over at Technicolor/Hollywood.

If you are going to insist upon strict interpretation, then I have 2 words: Carbon Dating. A strict Judeo Christian interpretation would have us believing that the Earth is only 5 k years old.

What was really disturbing was the fact that Noah was so intent upon killing babies. When did God say to do so?

I was really looking forward to this movie. It is not bad, just not as good as it could have been.

I need to throw in my 2c here. I managed to watch Noah over the weekend and while I am not overly religious I did read the bible but believe in evolution. I tried to be objective and view the movie solely as an entertainment piece but even then the inconsistency with the original source material kept bothering me through out the movie and definitely ruined the experience.

While many other biblical ( and other historical/fictional source material ) inspired movies also have strayed from the source material they at least try and stay to some extent reasonably close to give an accurate enough depiction of the original story. This as well as a long list of more recently released movies have begun to add "fluff" to the stories to add more drama and conflict which if done in appropriate doses can be enjoyable but this movie just went too far with the inconsistencies for me to enjoy it. Now this is coming from a person who read the LOTR and hobbit books and I liked what Peter Jackson has done. Sorry Aronofsky you disappointed me, I believe the movie could have been far better sticking a bit closer to the biblical tale. Just my thoughts tho.

On a more relevant AVS note whats with the low end? Those watchers felt like they were tip toeing in my living room with unconvincing cgi and poor motion capture and explosions had no explosive impact. Can anyone compare the bluray release to the theater release for the low end?

Supposedly, God wanted to end the human race, or at least that's how Noah interpreted his dreams. I guess he was worried that when the girls grew up, their uncle would impregnate them. I suppose if Noah was 600 years old, his youngest son probably wasn't more than like 157, so the relative age difference wouldn't be that much of a factor.
