Just watched, last night, The Chinese Wuxia movie "A touch of Zen."

Great movie, horrible PQ, and I ran it on my up-scaling Oppo. Yes it was 1969-70, but I have seen much better looking examples of the genre.

The King Hu project was strong on story and action, but almost unwatchable for someone who is otherwise spoiled. I still enjoyed it (just can't help loving me some hottie Kung Fu chicks) but would probably not recommend it for everyone.

King Hu's other masterpiece, Come Drink With Me is visually a bit better.

If you want something from the genre that looks good, watch Young Auntie from the Shaw Brothers. A lot of fun, and better PQ.

Could we ever get someone to review these older movies in light of the standards of AVS? I believe that Ralph does primarily new movies.

For example, John Woos Hard Boiled/The Killer/A Better Tomorrow?

I watched them many years ago before I could afford a nice set-up.

What we DO get is a fair amount of adrenaline fueled by ample amounts of car chase muscle and some of the most excited stunt work I have seen. No CGI here folks, just good ole fast cars, great driving and cinematography that places you up close and sometimes on the edge of your seat.
I've been thinking about renting this but after reading this passage from Ralph's review again I might buy it

Just finished watching Need For Speed and I loved it. The pq and aq was top notch but I didn't mind the story at all. Loved the cars and the racing. This film kept me entertained from beginning to end. Thanks Ralph for the review, this movie for me is a successful blind buy with plenty of replay value.

While I've cut back on my Blu-ray purchases, I had to spring for this one considering the perfect score for AV, plus the fact is I love the games. Watching it tonight.

Rented this one to watch tonight also, will post quick review after. Looking forward to it, loved the games too.

** Update - watched it over the weekend and unfortunately, I did not like it. The car races were not done very well IMO and the acting/actors were awful (yes, I figured the script would be kinda weak but this was just...bad). I'm a huge fan of Fast and Furious movies and the NFS video games are my favorites but sadly, I could not finish this movie, stopped right after the Agera race. The movie did SOUND great on my surround, the one positive of this movie **

Regards,
I thought the movie itself was what I'd expect from a video game adaptation, which is to say it won't get an Oscar nod for acting or best screenplay. But who cares!!!

Visually, it was a feast. Absolutely worthy of a perfect score IMO. I fell right into every scene, the production never let me down and the result was the kind of escapist cinematic treat that I crave. The audio really pushed my system hard, some of the bass sweeps were very powerful and effective and the level of detail—the number of individual sounds you could track and the depth of the layering—was exceptional. As you stated, demonstration material.

As a fan of the game, I'd say it captured the overall feel of the franchise well enough, and most definitely got the driving right.

Very fun movie and my hats off to the folks that made this movie! Ralph was right with the SQ and PQ! This is one movie to show off your system.

Kinda makes me wish someone would remake The Gumball Rally.

Best 3D I've seen.
Best car race scenes in a movie.
Best surround sound.
Best Bass.
And not a bad script either.

I loved it and I'm so happy I waited to see it on my setup at home.

Yup very well done. Wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if it weren't in 3d. Another great import.

Did the 3d import have 7.1 or 5.1? I assume it's region free?

Bummer. My Oppo 93 doesn't have the region free mod. Was hoping the disc was region free.

Edit: Kimchidvd.com has a region A, 3d 7.1 release.

I'd have to disagree on this movie and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in terms of picture quality. The sound in this movie was some of the best I've ever heard, but I run the same projector as you Ralph a RS4910 but on a larger 125" 2.35:1 screen and this movie from 15 feet away from the screen just didn't have the sharpness and clarity to me to warrant a 5/5 in the resolution and sharpness area. Movies I think go into that category would be movies like Oblivion, The Lone Survivor, Ender's Game, etc. Those movies visually were the sharpest looking blu-rays I've ever seen. Great movie overall I thought (used to love the games) but I just think the resolution/clarity numbers being used are too forgiving.

I'm not saying the movie looked bad, it was a good looking movie visually but I just think you should reserve the 5/5 numbers for some of the best encodes you've ever seen on blu-ray.

Greetings,

Thanks for offering your impressions on Need for speed dmoneyman2323. I have long since foregone entering into debates regarding opinions of my reviews relative to whether a release should warrant a perfect technical rating versus those that are close but not quite close enough. To be honest we are splitting hairs. Of the three titles you referenced above only one received a 100 from me for video and that was Lone survivor. However they all received high reference quality scores meaning variations in what you saw versus what I saw are minimal. I can't speak for your setup and am not questioning your perspective.

I call them as I see them. Making decisions based upon criteria relative to what others feel should be a 100 or not wouldn't make sense. I have given 100 to a small percentage of the 1700 plus titles that I have reviewed, believe me. But I will say that if every one of them warranted it then that's what they would get.

As for your remark about Spider Man 2 I am not sure what you mean unless you've seen that on Blu-ray as well. Then again it's not relevant within the topic of this review thread and even if it was I would offer the same response.

Ralph C. Potts

I agree that the movie had great sound and video but gee whiz the acting and plot was mindblowing dumb. The could have at least tried a little harder with so the screns without the racing was easier the believe.
Oh well , idiot script writers that don`t have a clue to the subject matter or real life are everywhere in hollywood these days.

I seen this movie in the theaters and walked out after about an hour. It was absolute torture and the only movie in my entire life I've ever walked out of that I paid for. I love cars and hot rods too and it made no difference. It actually seemed like Aaron Paul was trying his hardest to over act in every scene. Such a shame that it a movie so horrible can have a flawless presentation. I believe that's all the director and producers cared about was it's look and sound.
