The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season (Blu-ray) Official AVSForum Review

In this highly anticipated new season, we see Rick and the group of survivors fostering a thriving community in the safe haven of the prison. Sadly, in this brutal world, happiness is short-lived and walkers and outside threats are no match for danger brewing inside the fences. The group’s home and new way of life will be thoroughly tested, and their struggle to survive has never been so perilous.

"Who Will Arrive? Who Will Survive?"

My Take:

On reflection of AMC's The Walking Dead Season 3 (my review here) I was still concerned about the story line getting stagnant; Lets walk and fight off zombies, meet low-life humans as another obstacle, and search for a yet another safe haven-- rinse and repeat. I was also worried about Season 4 as most of the major characters I really enjoyed had been offed for 3 seasons, leaving me with my least favorites. Being a big fan of the show, which I reviewed (Season 1 & Season 2), I had these same concerns before season 3 as well. Was it warranted?

Season 4 started to show signs of weakness as it had some very slow episodes and some long drawn out flashbacks that were momentum killers. It had episodes dedicated to single members or groups that were split, leaving other characters for long periods of time, seemingly not having much meat in the story-line. The basic arc here was when the groups survivors were split after the battle with the Prison battle with the Governor, they all end up looking for each other as well as a place called "Terminus" that they keep seeing graffiti for. Whether Terminus is real or not it gives them a new hope, a reason to keep on keeping on and when we finally get towards the end of the season it gave me a renewed excitement for this October's fifth season. Bottom line is that is wasn't bad but The Walking Dead Season 4 just didn't live up to the ones before it. The positive here is even at its worst it is one of the best show on TV.

Parental Guide:

This film contains some sexual content, language and brief nudity.

The Walking Dead: Season 4 comes to Blu-ray disc from Anchor Bay/Starz featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24.2 mbps Dolby TrueHD MA 7.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 3.3 mbps.

There is very little, if any deviation in the aesthetic of the show, the sound design as well as the quality of the transfer Anchor Bay delivers on Blu-ray. My Thoughts are the same as the Season 1 and 2 releases which I am quoting below.

"Anchor Bay delivers a faithful transfer of AMC's 'The Walking Dead'. You better love film grain as this was shot on 16mm film stock, and the grain is pretty heavy here...you can almost sink your teeth into it. Grain can be a double edged sword, sometimes it can get overbearing but sometimes it is beautiful, adding to the look and feel of a film. Here it added to the gritty despair and depression of the situation. It was not the most detailed or crisp HD broadcast I have seen, but was passable. This translates directly to its Blu-ray release, showing that Anchor Bay was true to the source. Colors seem spot on from what I have on MY DVR, with flesh-tones taking on a natural but slightly pale tone. Black levels sure do shine as do the shadow details. There really is nothing to fault here, as it looks as it should and was filmed to look. The audio track was a step above, with a rich and dynamic sound-scape, having no issues with dialogue and a very nice surround presentation. Most impressive was the palpable concussion of gunshots and other dynamic sound effects as well as LFE that dug room shaking deep, adding another level to this superb lossless Dolby TrueHD."

Bonus Features:
  • Audio Commentary's
  • (HD) Inside The Walking Dead
  • (HD) Making of The Walking Dead
  • (HD) Drawing Inspiration
  • (HD) The Governor is Back
  • (HD) Society, Science & Survival
  • (HD) Inside KNB Studios
  • (HD) A Journey Back to Brutality
  • (HD) Deleted Scenes
  • (HD) Previews
[*] UltraViolet (UV) Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

The Walking Dead: Season 4 is a the weakest of the seasons, however, even at its worst it is still damn good. Another faithful to what I saw when watching it on TV, as well as bunch of great extras make this a must have for fans who own the other seasons.

I have watched all 4 seasons now and it seemed to me the theme was "who ARE the walking dead". When the the woman took two walkers and was going through the forest and disguised herself that was when I caught on. I liked the way they split the characters up. It was a change up and interesting and let us explore their characters deeper. Looking forward to SE5 and Terminus.

The show has definitely become just too stale and boring since season 3. I have all three seasons on blu ray but have hardly watched the season 3 blu ray (I've seen all episodes of the show already on TV) so I don't think I'll be jumping on the season 4 blu ray, unless I can get it for a good deal later on. Here in Canada it's $49.99 and I'm just not interested enough to justify the purchase.

I lost interest in this show first part of season 4, but might give this season another shot at some point.

I actually found seasons 1 and 2 to be the best of the series. Something seems to have changed. It feels like something is lacking...Frank Darabont maybe? I don't know but it just feels...Different. I can't quite place it. I still highly enjoy it however and like you said Lee, even at it's worst it's still one of the best.

The 4th season was painfully slow, and Rick's last words in Season 4 just before the show ends were just plain annoying. Not sure if that was from the comic book series or what. I'll probably still watch Season 5 since I've gone this far, similar to what I did with Lost so many years ago after that series took a huge turn for the worse. Hopefully the Walking Dead doesn't leave me disappointed in whatever way the series ultimately ends!

I think the shark jumping moment for this show was near the end of season 2. Rick took Shane aside and gave him a stern "it's MY baby" speech (about Lori's pregnancy). I literally laughed for 5 minutes after that. It was extremely pathetic and stupid.

I've seen better dialogue, characterization, writing, and acting from a soap opera. And that is what Walking Dead has become, a soap full of annoying characters making bad decisions that don't make any sense whatsoever with the occasional zombie attack or two.

There's a deleted take of that scene where Rick actually says "****ing with" and it was a LOT more impactful.
