AVSForum Blu-ray Spotlight: Ralph's picks for Room Shaking Bass

Just finished watching it, the movie itself wasn't too bad I actually enjoyed. If they actually spent a bit of time doing it right it could of been fantastic !!
The audio was well used but I found it a bit on the hot mix when it came to the fronts and surrounds. I usually play at -4db for DTS HD Ma tracks and 0db for PCM etc. this track I had to go down to -8db. The lfe was good at -8db but at-4db the fronts and surrounds it was too loud ( I couldn't go there ). Overall I enjoyed it

Nice to hear someone else enjoyed that movie. I played the games a lot in high school (namely the original Halo and Halo 2) so i really liked it. They just released another one called Nightfall. I'll have to check it out.

I personally thought Nightfall was not as impressive bass wise as the first. The bass that is there is good, but it's more spread out instead of a nice 30 minute onslaught at the end lime part one which I preferred. Curious what you think though when you watch.

Ralph/others....Monsters Dark Continent is worth a spin for bass/audio if you have not seen it!

Was Nightfall better than the first one movie wise? Or is it pretty much the same?

It might be a little better, but overall I thought both were terrible. It's very subjective though, so rent and see what you think.

Greetings,

I don't have plans on doing a formal review of them at this time but own them all and will give them a spin to see how well the LFE holds up.

Hot Fuzz is in a completely different league vs the other two which are weak by todays standards. Hot Fuzz is a fantastic bass film though!

I have only watched Apocalypse Now Redux on DVD and while the movie itself is great, the soundtrack wasn't that impressive.
Having seen several versions now I have no desire to buy the Blu-ray version, unless something great has happened to the sound, like a full remix in Atmos or DTS-X.

I finally got a chance to watch Hot Fuzz myself. My wife and I had a free night finally and just blind watched it it on Netflix. Even the DD+ track on Netflix sounded nice, pretty good bass. I bet the BD is killer. Being a Shaun of the Dead fan I thought the movie was great.

After spending time manually tweaking my Subs over the weekend I thought I'd mention a movie I like to use as a volume test during manual setups, "Contact", I've found that the bass during the wormhole scene while not "off the charts", is great to use as a reference for volume levels, a nice happy medium for setup purposes.

*Warning* None of my suggestions, ideas or even thoughts have any WAF, in any way!

I've watched this movie 3 times since installing 7.2.4 atmos. This is after a least 12 times watching it previously over the years. My old 5.1 setup just did not do it justice.

With my PJ screen calibrated and my AVR/speakers/subs calibrated, it's almost like this movie was made for Atmos and I am hearing things that I hadn't in the past! WoW!

My parents were visiting this weekend and we were searching my Plex library for something to watch. My step dad chose Master and Commander (2003). I probably hadn't watched this since I got it on DVD a decade ago.

Even though this movie is old, I was shocked at the excellent sound track. I'm not sure whether or not it would meet the earth-shattering bass requirements of this thread, but I have to tell you that the cannon fire scenes in this movie are outstanding IMHO.

Glad my Dad suggested that we resurrect this one last night.
