"You Never Know What You Might Find"
My Take:
When three trash-picking boys from Rio's slums find a wallet amongst the daily detritus of their local dump, little do they imagine that their lives are about to change forever. But when the local police show up, offering a handsome reward for the wallet's return, the boys realize that what they've found must be important.
Based on Andy Mulligan's best-selling novel, Trash isn't what I expected. By that I mean it far more cinematic impact than anticipated. The narrative paints in broad strokes with regard to its sociopolitical underpinnings and portrayal of corruption and the impoverished. Where it excels is in its solidly developed characters in Raphael, Gardo and Rato and the depiction of their willingness to go out on a limb and kick sand in the faces of the establishment, using the only tools at their disposal, cunning, bravado and testosterone. There is a fantastical sense of adventurous purpose that shines through, which occasionally derails thoughts of grounded reality, but I had no problem with that.
Incorporating elements of action, drama, light humor and suspense Trash's story proves thought provoking and heartwarming but not overtly cloying as its breadcrumbs tell an engaging and spirited tale that walks a fine line between escapism and real-life. Plot holes abound but that's part of its charm. When it was over I looked at my wife and we both said aloud, 'good movie'.
Parental Guide:
The rating is for language and violence.

This is pleasing video presentation that boasts plenty of refinement, stable contrast, deeply saturated colors, and strong dimension. Blacks are punchy and stand out when onscreen with mixed content. Visual perspective in low lighting and darkened areas is estimable. The combination gives dark scenes appreciable depth. Images are boldly colorful, film like and perfectly suited for the source material.
The lossless DTS-HD MA soundtrack has good dynamic range, detail rich clarity and discernible channel separation which enable the detection of subtle nuance within the recording. Dialogue is firmly planted in the center channel which clearly renders voices and effects with appropriate distinction and tonal balance within the front soundstage. Low frequency effects aren’t noteworthy but the subwoofer works in tandem with the rest of the system to appropriately convey the low level bass associated with the music score/soundtrack.
Bonus Features:
Based on Andy Mulligan's best-selling novel, Trash is an entertaining multi-genre mix that tells an engaging and spirited tale that walks a fine line between escapism and real-life. It comes to Blu-ray from Universal Studios Home Entertainment featuring excellent high definition video and crystal clear lossless sound quality. Trash requires a bit of imagination and even a little brain checking but will reward you for the effort. Give it a spin on Blu-ray.
