"Lights. Camera. Abduction."

My Take:

When London Has Fallen arrived I thought it wise to check out the original, Olympus Has Fallen, as I had yet to see it. I must admit I had fun and enjoyed it as a well made popcorn flick. It was nothing too original, took a bit from Die Hard, had some great actors and was a good watch on my system. I threw in London Has Fallen right after and it was just a tedious experience to sit through. Filled with silly dialogue and poorly directed, it was a waste of talented actors. This sequel didn't capitalize on what was good about the first, and had a cash-in direct to video feel.

The film (again) follows Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) as he is still watching over President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart). Asher travels to London, as do many other world leaders, to go to the British Prime Minister's funeral...and of course London falls under attack from terrorists. Banning must protect Asher alone and on foot while the city is under siege.

So ya, that's the plot, and it's as exciting as my captivating synopsys paragraph is. London Has Fallen is a lazy film that misses the direction the first one had thanks to the absent and needed Antoine Fuqua (Training Day).

Parental Guide:

Rated R for strong violence and language throughout

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100/EXCELLENT = 83-91/GOOD = 74-82/AVERAGE = 65-73/BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

**My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc.**

Audio: 96

  • Low frequency effects:
  • Surround Sound presentation:

  • Resolution/Clarity:
  • Black Level/Shadow Detail:
  • Color Reproduction:
  • Fleshtones:
  • Compression:

London Has Fallen comes to Blu-ray disc from Universal featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 28.8 mbps DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 4.4 mbps.

Since my AV Processor doesn't yet have DTS:X I used the DTS-HD MA track. I was pleasantly surprised as this is one great sounding track. Deep and rich low end shook my room, and the overall sonic quality was warm and full. Surrounds were used aggressively, however, they were always adding to the film, never distracting. There was a moment or two when I felt like the mix might have lost track of some of the gun-fire and insanity, but most of the time it had a spot-on imaging that was clear with easily understood dialogue.

London Has Fallen's video is also well above average, but its look leaves a bit to be desired. Clean, clear and detailed, it's a satisfying image with strong black levels and what appears to be accurate colors. This still doesn't make it eye-candy as as it's a bit boring to look at with a lot of dark scenes. Thankfully there scenes are handled very well.

Bonus Features:
  • (HD) The Making of London Has Fallen 13m
  • (HD) Guns, Knives & Explosives 8m
  • UltraViolet (UV) and Itunes Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

London Has Fallen was a crappy flick. The original is much much better and I don't recommend a purchase at all. Interested parties and fans will be treated to a great soundtrack, which is always a welcome addition to action movies like this. Lets hope this franchise has fallen.

Lee, thank you for your candid review. I purchase this movie along with 10 Cloverfield Lane. I did not open London Has Fallen so I will be taking it back.

I watched it yesterday. I found it a little bit boring. Sure it has action but i agree with the comment "filled with silly dialogue and poorly directed, it was a waste of talented actors. This sequel didn't capitalize on what was good about the first, and had a cash-in direct to video feel". I feel like i'm wacthing a episode of 24 tv show. PQ and AQ very good but movie was forgettable.

To each his own, I saw the movie at the theatre and thought it was a good action flick, nothing exceptional, but did purchase it for additional viewing.

As for 10 Cloverfield Lane, I was really irritated with the ending, it sort of came out of nowhere, it left you hanging, the plot was poorly written IMO, so I will never see it again.

Yeah I too was fairly entertained by the lone wolf aspect of a badass kicking ass action movie, not a great story but thats not what this was going for... to bad on the audio, this would have been great in ATMOS, wonder if we will eventually see a 4k uhd with atmos version later on.

I enjoyed the first one but I have to admit I was disappointed with the second one. After it was over, I was left feeling like I wanted more from it. Glad it was just a rental.

Isn't DTSX basically the same thing as ATMOS?

You are correct, totally over looked the DTSX mention in the audio formats, Im use to how Ralph does reviews and leads with the newer audio formats so I saw DTS-HD leading the audio way and stopped there. ^^;;

But a 4k uhd version would still be nice with all those fun explosions and landscape scenes.

To bad we dont know how well the DTSX tracked sounded, but Im in the same boat, still waiting for the firmware update to role out which fingers crossed will happen in July.

I completely disagree with this review. Sure it's unrealistic action popcorn flick but so what.

Just finished it and enjoyed the hell out of it. Thank gawd not another 100th installment action hero, super friend, Batman bore the hell out me yet again flick.

I'm totally cool with a 21st century Die Hard wannabe flick any day of the week.

Turn the lights off crank it up and grab a bowl of popcorn. Fun flick.

Here's my two bit.

First, thanks Lee for your honest review and thought!

For me and my better half, we did enjoy-it for what it was
Went into it without great expectations.

I would say a James Bond on steroids without the very good "one liner".
Action blown over the top, and some cheesy one liners.

For a Popcorn movie, I would give-it 4 stars for enjoyment purpose only.
If you are serious about the story, like Lee said, 1.5 stars.

Just a different point of view, like a salmon going against the flow of the river

I'm usually very easy to please with these kinds of movies. Apparently, I hit my limit with this one.
It plays out as if most of the London police force, and Scotland Yard, has been infiltrated with terrorists, and there are NO actual law enforcement visible until the end. Just "bad guys".

It looks and sounds great, though. So if you can completely suspend all rational thought, you may enjoy it.

I thought it was a pretty decent action flick!
I've never looked to these type of movies to be realistic , it's an over the top action movie!!

Watched London Has Fallen, this film was awesome, I really enjoyed it. I preferred it over the first. Definitely will be picking this up and watch in DTS:X next time.

I guess these type of movies are my guilty pleasure. Popcorn Goobers and some Soda sit back and enjoy. Lots of sequels on tap by the way Paris, Moscow, Rome, Delhi, Tokyo the sequels my never end.

Rented this last night and had to hit the Buy button on Amazon as soon as the credits rolled. It did have some cheesy one liners but I found it about as enjoyable as the first movie or any of the Taken films. Check your brain at the door and enjoy the explosions.

The soundtrack was amazing! DTS:X was a win and knocked this one out of the park. Tons of bass and overhead effects... sounded like buildings were falling on my head.

Olympus has fallen was quite better. I never had the feeling that the protagonists were in serious danger.

Hmmm...What am I missing here? If this movie was so lackluster, why such a high rating (92). Seen much lower ratings (in the 80s), that still approve of the movie. If it's just cuz of Gerard Butler, I can understand. He is somewhat one dimensional. Unless he's screaming about Sparta.
