"Expect the unexpected"
Celebrate the platinum anniversary of the unforgettable comedy classic Father of the Bride plus the uproarious follow-up Father of the Bride Part II on Blu-ray for the first time ever. Screen legends Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Martin Short star in these warm and witty family favorites, complete with a new digital restoration. Things get out of hand for befuddled father George Banks (Martin) when his young daughter unexpectedly announces her plans to wed. Life gets even crazier in the sidesplitting sequel when his daughter and his wife (Keaton) both announce they are pregnant, and George desperately tries to capture the wild and crazy days of his youth. Relive every heartwarming and hilarious moment in this special 2-Movie Collection. It's fantastic family entertainment that really delivers.
Father of the Bride: In this entertaining update of the much-loved Hollywood classic, Steve Martin stars as George Banks, a befuddled father who has a hard time letting go of his young daughter when she unexpectedly announces her plans to wed Bryan, an undoubtedly nice young man that she meets while studying aboard in Italy. We get front row seats to George's trials and tribulations leading up to the big event. Diane Keaton shines as George's level-headed wife, Nina, while funnyman Martin Short offers comic relief as the off-the-wall wedding consultant.
Father of the Bride II: Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Martin Short return in this sequel to Father Of The Bride. Having just married off his cherished daughter (Kimberly Williams), George Banks is ready to look forward to the next chapter in his life. So when his daughter and his wife Nina (Keaton) both announce they are pregnant, George finds himself in one outrageous situation after another -- desperately trying to recapture the wild and crazy days of his youth.
Father Of The Bride is fresh, fun and if you happen to have a little girl, heartwarming. It speaks for us fathers who dread the day when our daughter (s) comes home with the guy who will step in and take our place as their protector. Martin is charmingly convincing as the frustrated, doleful and loving George whose bittersweet experience of his daughter's wedding makes for excellent family entertainment. Father of the Bride II sees the return of the entire cast from the original while adding the always funny Eugene Levy to the mix as Mr. Habib. This sequel isn't terrible but really feels more like a rehashed effort spun to George undergoing a mid-life crisis upon learning he is going to be a grandfather (and new father). If you enjoyed the original this one is easily tolerable although I can only take Martin Short and BD Wong in small doses. Eugene Levy on the other hand is a hoot and makes for some of the film's better moments. The original film stands quite well on its own while the sequel is more of a companion piece that only works in tandem. Regardless, fans are sure to appreciate having them both in this three disc set that features the two films in high definition, on a single dual layered BD-50 along with their DVD counterparts.
The rating is for mild thematic material and language.

Father of the Bride & Father of the Bride II come to Blu-ray Disc from Disney featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 19 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.3 mbps.
These two films share production elements that present similarly in high definition so my comments will be reflective of both. These are fair overall high definition presentations for 20/17 year old catalog titles but they don't compare to the best catalog releases I have seen on Blu-ray. Each boasts clean, well rendered primary colors and a mix of muted secondary hues that mate well with the source material. Fleshtones have a slightly pinkish tinge but retain lifelike quality. Resolution is predominantly consistent with varying degrees of fine rendering that appear scene dependent. Blacks are slightly elevated, and contrast is nicely balanced which gives a fair degree of pop to colors and brighter sequences while darker or low lit segments offer discernible gradational highlights but lack punch. Grain is present and moderately textured over the course of each presentation. There are a few instances where its presence takes on more prominence but I didn't find it to be overtly distracting.
The DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio soundtrack delivers crisp dialogue in a mostly frontal presentation that offers splashes of ambience and a few off camera cues through the surround channels. There is limited low frequency detail mixed to the subwoofer but in this film there really is no call for it. The blend of music, voices and sound effects through the front channel speakers is rendered with excellent clarity, fair dimensional perspective and average depth. It never comes across as thin or dynamically starved and based upon the elements in the recording sounds just fine.

Father of the Bride is an entertaining update of the much-loved Hollywood classic, and stars Steve Martin as George Banks, a befuddled father who has a hard time letting go of his young daughter when she unexpectedly announces her plans to wed. Martin is charmingly convincing in the title role and the result is a fresh, fun and occasionally heartwarming film that for some of us hits pretty close to home. Father of the Bride II doesn't have the same combination of freshness and fun, but if you're a fan of the original makes for a worthy companion piece. Both films make their debut on Blu-ray in this three disc release from Disney that features fair but unremarkable high definition video quality, clear lossless DTS-HD Master Audio sound and previously released bonus material that isn't much to speak of. If you enjoy these films but never got around to picking them up on DVD this set is worth adding to your collection.
