"A comedy about the journey between popping the question and tying the knot"

Film Synopsis:

Tom (Segel) and Violet (Blunt) seem destined to live happily ever after, but as one hysterical delay follows another, everyone starts to wonder: can they survive the engagement?

My Take:

The five-year engagement is a typical romantic comedy that focuses on a compatible couple that fall in love, make the commitment and through various reasons keep putting off the nuptials. It follows the same formula as most rom coms as we see their relationship fall victim to conflict derived from unspoken feelings and outside pressures. Of course things manage to work themselves out but not before a few bitter moments, heartache and self-esteem crushing lows. Actually The five-year engagement, formulaic or not is fairly entertaining thanks to a decent script and solid chemistry between leads Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. The supporting players in Chris Pratt, Rhys Ifans, Mindy Kaling, Randall Park, Kevin Hart and Allison Brie add to the fun. I do want to send a special shout out to Lauren Weedman as Chef Sally. She only had a few scenes which is a shame but she made the most of them and cracked me up. Co-writer Jason Segel and co-writer/director Nicholas Stoller had lots of ideas flowing and attempted to implement them all. Luckily several full sequences were cut from the theatrical version which still manages to run over two hours. There are pacing problems that minimally affect the flow of the film but not to a detrimental extent. If I had another small complaint to make it would be the fact that it seems every Jason Segel movie requires him to bear either his junk or naked butt in front of the camera. I watched the theatrical version but an unrated version which runs seven minutes is included as well. Despite a few shortcomings The five-year engagement has plenty going for it and makes for an enjoyable watch especially for those that tend to like its hybrid formula of edgy humor, melancholy romance and affable characters.

Parental Guide:

The film contains sexual content and language throughout.

The five-year engagement comes to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios HE featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio that has an average bitrate of 3.3 Mbps.

This is a pleasing high definition presentation that exhibits video quality that is consistent with a newer release film on Blu-ray Disc. Colors are pleasing with a vivid level of saturation that appears natural. There are several sequences that are adorned in a permeating sepia toned aesthetic that is apparently geared toward setting the thematic tone intended by the filmmakers. During those instances fleshtones tend to look a little bronzy but otherwise fall in line with the film’s remaining visual elements and look fine. Contrast is spot on and blacks are fairly delineated and deep. Images are crisp and resolute with defining sharpness that provides appreciable dimension. The video is whistle clean and shows no obvious signs of compression errors or video related anomalies.

The front heavy lossless surround mix features dialogue that is full bodied with defining tonal characteristics and prominent soundstage position. High level detail is readily apparent as subtle sound effects, music and voices were rendered with superior clarity and depth. There is little call for surround activity and extended dynamics however there are a few instances that provide a discerning level of spatial envelopment accompanied be punchy low frequency enhancement.

Bonus Features:

  • Theatrical and Unrated versions of the film

  • Feature commentary with Nicholas Stoller, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rodney Rothman

Final Thoughts:

The five-year engagement doesn’t break the romantic comedy mold but has the ingredients necessary to make for a fairly entertaining movie on date night. It makes its way to Blu-ray Disc from Universal Studios Home Entertainment featuring gratifying high definition video and crystal clear lossless sound and a hearty supplement package that is well worth exploring especially if you liked the film. If you’re a devoted fan this is worth picking up otherwise put it at the top of your rental queue, pop open a glass of wine and give it a spin with your significant other.
