"Where Do We Go Now?"

Film Synopsis:

A group of Lebanese women try to ease religious tensions between Christians and Muslims in their village.

My Take:

There is nothing new in the fact that religious tensions are high, have always been high, and unfortunately seem like they will always be high in the Middle East. If only they could all take the advice this film seems to be giving, that when things are getting to that boiling point we all just need a bit of levity from some good old fashioned laughter. Where Do We Go Now? is the heartfelt story set in a remote Lebanese village where a Church and a Mosque happen be standing next to each other. The film follows the towns-woman and the silly, sometimes slapstick things they do to keep their overly strong willed men from starting yet another religious war.

Where Do We Go Now? is a clever, well directed film from director and star Nadine Labaki, which challenges those who peruse conflict from religion to see the humor and absolute waste of time it is to fight over it. There is meaning within the satire, and there were a few laugh out loud moments, but the film does exist because there is truth in the sad state of affairs that allows it to. The film, however, knows where to draw the line, which is offering a crazy solution to this separation of religion in the region, rather than dwell on the negatives and fights it is so obviously against. Great performances, a captivating cast, great scenery and an unorthodox and extremely enjoyable story make Where Do We Go Now? a recommend film.

Parental Guide:

Thematic drug material, some sensuality and violent images

Where Do We Go Now? comes to Blu-ray disc from Sony featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 21.2 mbps DTS-HA MA MA 5.0 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 2.9 mbps.

Sony delivers yet another stunning transfer with its Blu-ray release of Where Do We Go Now?. The 1080p 2.35:1 image that was filmed digitally with the Arri Alexa camera looks stunningly film-like. Of Course, there are no signs of grain, nor are there any artifacts, banding or any possibly eyesores that can sprout from a digitally filmed image. Blacks are strong, however there are times where they are not the deepest shade possible. Colors are life-like, especially flesh-tones, and details are quite nice as well. As far as audio, don't let the lack of LFE fool you, as this track plays deep and there really is not much call for the almighty LFE to come in and do destruction in your room. Though spoken in Arabic, dialogue sounded precise and in the accurate place within the sound-stage. The landscapes natural ambiance filled the room, as the films sound design felt wide open and airy, with the day to day nuances coming across crisp from the front speakers. This was very nice, indeed.

CIH viewers note the English subtitles lie withing the image and not in the letterbox.

Bonus Features:

  • Commentary with Nadine Labaki and Khaled Mouzanar

  • (HD) An Evening with Nadine Labaki, Anne-Dominique Toussaint, and Khaled Mouzanar

  • (HD) The Making of Where Do We Go Now?

  • Where Do We Go Now? – Making the Music

  • (HD) Theatrical Trailer

Final Thoughts:

Where Do We Go Now? is an interesting comedy huddled within a heartfelt drama. Writer/Actor/Director Nadine Labaki impressively handles the delicate balancing act of religion and comedy, making a bold statement about how ludicrous fighting over religion truly is. This one can be enjoyed on many levels, for its laughs, for its meaning as well as for its superb A/V quality from Sony Home Entertainment.
