"Officer Down"

Film Synopsis:

One year ago, dirty cop Detective Callahan was shot in a drug bust gone wrong, and saved by an anonymous stranger who gave him a second chance to clean up his life. Of course this strange now wants something in return.

My Take:

Indifference. Thats my thoughts in a nutshell.

So I didn't particularly dislike Officer Down, I just didn't connect to any of the characters, the meandering story-line, or out protagonists journey. I guess it can be attributed to that fact that Officer Down tried to play with a few genre clichés and plot-lines, but not one of them came through as fully realized. Acting, direction, all were above average, the film was paced well, but something was lacking; that something was the storyline. You see its really a simple plot that is laid out strangely, all in an effort to make it feel more complicated than it is.

Stephen Dorff (Blade) does a fine job as Detective Callahan (interesting name choice, dontcha think?), an alcoholic/drug abusing dirty cop who has changed his ways after being shot and rescued by an unknown good samaritan. His past seems to chatch up with him, like any good past in a movie like this does, and the good samartian shows his face and asks for a favor. This favor takes Callahan down a path that mingles with his demons, plays with his sanity and opens up a road of corruption. The films supporting cast helps things be a bit easier to digest and includes turns by Walton Goggins (The Shield), David Boreanazv (Angel), Stephen Lang (Avatar), as well as James Woods, who has jumped the shark by becoming a second rate Pacino with his pissed of Schtick.

I can't recommend a rental or purchase of Officer Down, but think it is a decent late night flick on cable when all else fails.

Parental Guide:

Violence, language, nudity and drug content.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Officer Down comes to Blu-ray from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 19.4 mbps and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound that has an average bitrate of 2.4mbps

Officer Down has decent elements, like some amazingly detailed shots, above average blacks, natural colors, etc.. Somehow the outcome of it all is like the film...blah. It's shot in HD, and the more I see this medium, it either wows me, or comes across too sanitary and stale. Thankfully the audio track makes thing a bit more, shall we say, respectable. Clean, clear and crisp dialogue helps as the film has many moments of voice over. Dynamics are wide, working well with the films soundtrack, as well as gunfire and some strong moments of low frequency extension.

Bonus Features:

  • None Included

Final Thoughts:

Officer Down is a straight to video flick that is OK, even though its plot tries to be so much more than it really is. Considering its less than impressive shot in HD generic look, and lack of extras, I suggest a pass until you can catch it on cable one evening.
