"Earth's Greatest Secrets Are About To Break Out!"

Film Synopsis:

Astronaut Scorch Supernova finds himself caught in a trap when he responds to an SOS from a notoriously dangerous alien planet.

My Take:

As you can see, I doled out a reference mark as well as a decent score for the flick, so I am going to give this baby a recommendation. I have now seen it 3 times with the kids. They loved it, and I loved looking at was a win-win. The plot is a simple one and it follows our protagonist Gary Supernova (the voice of Rob Corddry) as he goes on a suicide mission to Earth to save his missing Astronaut brother Scorch Supernova (the voice of Brendan Fraser). The rub is that while Scorch is a big deal at home on planet Baab, his brother is a smaller, weaker and unknown family man...however, he is the brains behind all of Scorch's missions. This mission not only tests him in ways he could never imagine, it makes him a hero to his family, his planet and most importantly, his brother. Not that he wanted to be a hero, he did it to save his bro who went chasing a distress signal to the planet Earth (aka the Dark Planet) and ends up a prisoner by the mastermind of an intergalactic conspiracy.

Is the plot completely original? No. The animation, while great, does look like we have seen it before. So what?? It's a kids flick that has a few more good laughs then expected, and the story zooms along at light speed with its barely 90 minute runtime. I found some of the homages to sci/fi flicks enjoyable, and the voice cast did a great job. The stand-out here was the score by Aaron Zigman, who has scored The Notebook and Sex and the City among many others. It really helped propel the story and was really good. Check it out.

Parental Guide:

Rated PG for action and some mild rude humor.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Escape From Planet Earth comes to Blu-ray Disc from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment featuring 1080p MVC 3D video, 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22.4 Mbps and DTS-MA HD 5.1 sound that has an average bitrate of 3.4 Mbps

I cant think of a thing wrong with Escape From Planet Earth's 2D video presentation. From the rendering of the most minute detail to its inky and stable blacks, this animated transfer is pure eye candy. This translates over to its 3D counterpart which is housed on its own disc. Colors pop, extreme detail is still discernible in 3D and for all its worth, this is the best 3D presentation I have seen on BD. I have not seen as many as Ralph, however, I usually find myself with much more enjoyment watching 2D--this was a rare occasion I got through the whole feature with my glasses on. The lossless DTD-MA HD audio is no slouch either with wonderful dynamics, intense LFE and a showy 360 degree sound-field, this is one that is really not to be missed!.

Bonus Features:

  • Audio Commentary With Writer/Director Carl Brunker

  • (HD) Making Of

  • (HD) Alternate takes and Deleted Scenes

  • (HD) How to make an animated feature with Carl Brunker

  • (HD) Music Featurettes

  • UV Copy

  • Digital Copy

  • DVD Copy

Final Thoughts:

Escape From Planet Earth was fun. I dug it, the kids dug it, it looked and sounded amazing. What more can you ask for? It's not the most poignant of the top animated features, but it sure was a fun rip on sci/fi sensibilities. Featuring 2D, 3D, a UV and a digital copy, you guys can enjoy this one at home, in the car or wherever whenever. Families with kids will get some mileage out of a purchase, and the most discerning A/V critics of the animation world sure will love its presentation.

Thanks for the review, Lee! cool.gif

I ordered this blu-ray package earlier this morning as a blind buy, and judging from your review the money was well spent. Glad to see the impressive video and audio scores, and really looking forward to spinning this one up after reading your comments.

I watched this in 2D the other day. It has a nice cast of voiceover stars that really add to the appeal of this movie, A/V quality were excellent, and it was a fun watch. I wouldn't rate it among the best animated movies in the storyline department, but I don't think anyone will walk away too dissatisfied.

Good review, thanks. I agree with you. Picture was great! Movie was good. Better than I expected. Maybe not as good as 'Despicable Me', but very watchable.

This movie might not be so great if you are blind. I would recommend turning the brightness WAAAAYYYYY up.

I think I have to buy this Blu-Ray simply because it's from the company that was Mainframe Entertainment. Have to support my fellow Canadians that created what are in my opinion the finest CG animated series of all time, Reboot and Beast Wars.

Bought this blind buy and watched with the kids. Great 3D and movie pretty entertaining (though not top tier.) Loved how the 3D effects like snow, dust, explosions went beyond the 2.39:1 framing. Really enhanced the effect and was a lot of fun.

Fn loved this flick!! Had to buy the 3D version right away as I seen it in theaters and it was fantastic. I love the way the 3D effects come out of the 2.35:1 aspect into the bars above and below the image. Totally cool. Great movie and as you confirmed the audio is top notch.
