"Comedy exposed…"

Film Synopsis:

You’ve never seen anything quite like Movie 43... The year’s most outrageous and daringly original comedy, featuring the ultimate star-studded cast. No inappropriate storyline is off limits...including a “ballsy” blind date, a middle school “period” piece, and more. Please don’t sue us if you die laughing.

My Take:

From the twisted minds of producers Peter Farrelly and Charles Wessler, comes Movie 43-- the outrageous new ensemble comedy starring some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Movie 43 is not for the easily-offended and contains jaw-dropping, sometimes shockingly disturbing, but always entertaining intertwined storylines you'll have to see to believe.

Hmmm this one wasn’t the easiest to judge. I really wanted to love it especially based on the premise and who’s who cast lineup. Unfortunately the series of interconnected comedy style sketches containing overtly and purposefully crass situational humor don’t consistently deliver genuine laughs but instead stoops to raunchy gags as a foundation.

That isn’t to suggest that if kept in the right perspective, meaning forgiving the lack of thoughtful humor/spoofs, there aren’t one or two moments that tickle your funny bone. Watching the all-star cast perform in these insipid shorts does add to the jocularity which when all is said and done is really the point. In that light Movie 43 could be a bit more tolerable. Both the theatrical cut as well as an alternate cut is included. The latter adding four minutes to the original runtime. The truth is how much you enjoy It will depend on your tolerance. Here are a few of the stars that are featured in the film:

• Peter Farrelly (Director)
• Hugh Jackman
• Seth MacFarlane
• Kate Winslet
• Liev Schreiber
• Naomi Watts
• Anna Faris
• Richard Gere
• Kate Bosworth
• Kristen Bell
• Jason Sudeikis
• Justin Long
• Dennis Quaid
• Greg Kinnear
• Emma Stone
• Gerard Butler
• Halle Berry
• Terrence Howard
• Elizabeth Banks
• Josh Duhamel
• Uma Thurman

Parental Guide:

The film contains strong pervasive and crude sexual content in lcuding dialogue, graphic nudity, language and some violence.

AUDIO/VIDEO - By The Numbers:
REFERENCE = 92-100 / EXCELLENT = 83-91 / GOOD = 74-82 / AVERAGE = 65-73 / BELOW AVERAGE = under 65

Movie 43 comes to Blu-ray Disc from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 35 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.4 Mbps.

This is an excellent video presentation that boasts plenty of high level detail, strong contrast, and dimensional. Blacks are punchy and stand out when onscreen with mixed content. Visual perspective in low lighting is estimable which enhances depth. Images are dynamic, vividly colorful, clearly drawn, and perfectly suited for the source material. I didn’t see any obvious signs of video artifacts or extraneous noise. The lossless DTS-HD MA soundtrack has good dynamic range and detail rich clarity that enables the detection of subtle background sounds within the acoustic environment created by the surround mix. Dialogue is firmly planted in the center channel which clearly renders voices and effects with appropriate distinction and tonal balance within the front soundstage. Low frequency effects aren’t noteworthy but the subwoofer is kept busy as it works in tandem with the rest of the system to appropriately convey the low level bass associated with the film’s recorded elements.

Bonus Features:

  • Alternate Cut

  • (HD) Find our daughter – (Starring Julianne Moore & Tony Shaloub) 4 minutes

  • (HD) Theatrical trailer

  • Bonus DVD

  • Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

Movie 43 is typical of some of today’s overtly crass fast food style humor that favors sum over substance and results in a one note comedy containing sporadic moments that might get those with a higher tolerance for nonsensical situational gags giggling. Movie 43 comes to Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment featuring a solid high definition audio/video presentation coupled with an abysmal bonus package. It would be unfair to say that I truly didn’t like Movie 43 however I honestly can’t recommend it either. If you’re curious my advice would be to rent it and see for yourself.

I didn't know Peter Farrelly was involved in this!

I'm gonna have to see this just out of curiosity.

Thanks Ralph.

For your own sake, don't. This movie scores high in my top ten worst movies ever.

I honestly cannot believe why this ever made it to the cinemas.

I'd rather spend 90 minutes trying to get a blank BD-R to play than subject myself to this.

I haven't seen this movie but read a synopsis of its bits.

It's as though the movie is haling back to 70's midnight cult movie fare like Kentucky Fried Movie. Only with a sense of humor of the kind that prevail on Saturday Night Live after it's golden age from inception through perhaps the death of Chris Farley; unwatchable since and increasingly so as the years go by. To top it off, Kentucky Fried Movie did well without headline actors.

What is heartening is that out of Movie 43 is the possibility of seeing something new that is as bold, black, shocking and funny as Where's Poppa, a movie that many have said could never be made again due to the PC environment we're in. Movie 43 could have opened that door. Yet I sense that regardless whether that comes to pass, the new movie's freedom of expression will depend upon whose ox is being gored.

This movie should be on the official "don't ask don't tell" list. Don't ask me if I watched it and I won't tell you that I did. tongue.gif

p.s - it's TERRIBLE. Amazon Women on the Moon was Shakespearean Comedy compared to this dreck.

Looky here!

1. Is it better or worse than that Hansel and Gretel "movie" that's pretty high on my worst movies ever list?

2. Still a better love story than Twilight?

Yea, this was pretty bad.

There were some funny parts but I would probably say it was like multiple extended SNL skits that weren't very good.

It's a rare miss to have so many big names involved in one project and have it bomb.
