Sin City: A Dame To Kill For 3D (Blu-ray) Official AVSForum Review

Weaving together two of Frank Miller's classic stories with new tales, the town's most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more notorious inhabitants in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Can Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's star studded sequel lives up to the original?

"There is no justice without sin."

My Take:

It took over 8 years for the sequel to 2005's Sin City to hit theaters and it seemed like its time had passed aa the general buzz was low. Straight and to the point, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is not nearly as cool or striking and as the original. Its four intertwined stories are not particularly gripping or engaging, and it takes itself so serious that a lot of the movie came across humorous, as did many of its effects. For me, the cast and the movies unique look evoked a feeling of the original and that helped me shake off the lack of a truly good story, and the accidental silliness made it fun in a non-expected way.

Some of the original cast are back (Willis, Rourke, Alba, Dawson) and its lead Dwight has been easily swapped from Clive Owen to Josh Brolin. Other changes includes Dennis Haybert taking over as Manute (sadly due to the passing of Michael Clarke Duncan) and Jamie Chung is now playing Miho instead of Devon Aoki. The cast is what helped sell me here, as the script does become a run-on sentence and some of the action seems uninspired. The movies main plot is of Dwight and Ava (Eva Green). She was his first love who left him for a a rich and powerful man, and she ends up hunting Dwight down. Then there is Joseph Gordon-Levitt tale as he runs around Sin City trying to kill Senator Roark (Powers Booth). We also get tales thrown in that include Willis and Alba as well as Mickey Rourke's Marv.

Miller and Rodriguez know how to make this movie, and it looks and feels like the big comic book spectacle it was trying to be. Too bad Miller's writing comes across as uninspired here. In a weird way Sin City: A Dame To Kill For sells itself even though it just isn't that good. I enjoyed it, but not necessarily in the same way I did the original. I have a feeling this will polarize many in its audience.

Parental Guide:

This film contains strong brutal stylized violence throughout, sexual content, nudity, and brief drug use.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For comes to Blu-ray Disc from Anchor Bay featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 26.6 Mbps and MVC encoded 3D video, and lossless DTS HD-MA 5.1 sound that has an average bitrate of 3.8 Mbps.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For kills it an all 3 areas, with a stunning 2D and 3D video presentation, as well as reference audio.

Those who have seen know the film is extremely stylized, mostly in black and white with flourishes of color that accent blood, Eva Greens eyes, and any other little touch Miller and Rodriguez decided splash with color. The Blu-ray's contrast is strong and stable and has a great ability of having bright whites and inky blacks flow easily on the same frame. Shadow details and fine details are high caliber, and the hints of color pop off right off the screen. As far as its 3D presentation, the movies look really lends itself to one of the best 3D blu-rays I have seen. The on-screen depth is stunning, I didn't notice much artifacting or crosstalk which I sometimes get really annoyed with. There were even some moments where things popped out at me that were more realistic then I have seen. This is a great presentation and fans of 3D will be really happy.

The audio track it brutal, dynamic and super-fun. Surrounds are lit up more than most releases, adding to the on-screen style. LFE gets deep and guttural, but can also play smooth and sexy. The sound-stage is truly 360 degrees and the mix is really accurate. Dialogue is always in your face with strong sibilance and intonation, and the films music just adds to an already immersive track.

Bonus Features:
  • (HD) High-Speed Green Screen Version
  • (HD) Character Profiles
  • (HD) Make-Up Effects
  • (HD) Stunts
  • (HD) Trailer
  • UV Digital Copy
  • DVD Disc

Final Thoughts:

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For isn't as cool as the first, isn't as stylish and isn't as serious. Even if that last one wasn't intentional, its over-the-top attitude mixed with an easy to laugh at bit of wanton machismo makes this pulpy film enjoyable, even if its far from a good movie. I enjoyed its superlative A/V quality as well as its cast, making this a recommended Blu-ray release.

I was thinking about passing on this one, but with A/V/3D scores like this, you can count me in, too!

Thanks for reviewing it, Lee!

Thanks Lee. I appreciate the review. I didn't see this in the theaters and was on the fence about buying it. With target's 20% cartwheel coupon and your review from a PQ and AQ, I think I'll make the jump.

I loved the first movie and my expectations have dropped rather low for this one, so that might be good in a way. I'll probably give it a rental - if anything it will be a good audio and video performance.

"Then there is Joseph Levitt-Gordons tale..."

The name is right in the cast list but not in the review.

I really liked the original movie and was looking forward to this one. Sad to hear it's not up to snuff story-wise. I'll give it a rent at least due to the great cast.

Thanks for the review.

Any place we can find this cartwheel coupon??

Just glad there's a 3D review of this...with the exception of Bluray.com, they've been rather sparse lately.

Thanks for the great review!

I have a question regarding the quoted text above.
I was under the impression that sibilance was a bad thing in regards to audio/music. Is there a different meaning in your use of it?
I did a google search and still am in the dark so to speak.

Used a free redbox rental on this but then discovered that I needed to buy it because I found it great.

Thankfully the 3D version is only $19.99 on Amazon currently.

I watched it in 3D today (Walmart is selling it in a combo pack with the original Movie). I thought the Audio was superb and it looked very good in 3d. The story-line wasn't as good as the original, but I still enjoyed it.

Yes,... for some reason Ebay is flooded with $8 copies of just the 3D disc. Kind of wish I knew that before ordering the $19.99 full kit but I find this movie is great so I don't mind getting the UV copy also and stuff.

$20 is a great price for a new 3d release and I would have grabbed it for that price as well. It is nice having the full set as well.

I loved it! ...All of it; picture, sound, and 3D. ...So much so that right away after I revisited the first one,
in 3D.

This is a Reference 3D blu-ray disc, no doubt about it; and with high style, artful.

I saw it last night because of the scores (100 for audio and video is not something I can pass)
Must be the best audio track I've ever heard.

How I take it is that sibilance in a live performance is can be a bad thing, that is was wind guards on mic's are there to protect as that sound can be overwhelming and come off too loud.
In this instance, I meant it as I could hear fine details in the dialogue, including the "s" and "z" sound etc., as it was recorded and mixed so well.

Just watched it tonight, aurally and visually pretty dang good. Marv was looking a little...bloated. Nice list of hollywood folk got a part. I liked it overall but I need to watch it again, got kinda distracted around here in the latter part. I wonder how happy Frank Miller was with it?

Watched this last night with the wife. The AV presentation was top notch but the film just did nothing for me. I loved the first one too. This is one of those times where it felt like no one wanted to do a sequel so they brought some people no one had ever heard of in for a crappy cash grab sequel except in this case all the original talent (for the most part) is there. Makes no sense. The stories are barely engaging and the tone just doesn't come off right at all. I also had some serious issues with the timeline and how it plays out with the first. Clearly some of these stories come before what we saw with the first film, but the outcomes make no sense compared to what we see in the first??? Goldie died in the first one, yet she's alive here in the same story line with Dwight that has Manute with both his eyes yet Manute has the gold eye in the first film. Then he is killed but clearly alive later with said eye?? If you start looking at the characters none of this makes sense. Hardigan and Nancy is also a paradox if you tie them in as well.
