I think you just relearned the AVS unwritten rule - If you ask 10 people here, you will have no problem getting 15 different opinions on anything.

Let me add: "Tear out that ugly soffet and reroute the entire HVAC system" (I've got July, 2014 in the pool)

As much as I would have liked to have done that, ALL of the takeoffs for the upper floors come off of that line. There is simply nowhere else to run it.

Ok, HERE'S what happened over the weekend.....

problem solved.
Painted the ENTIRE soffit black to match the newly painted black ceiling.

I used the new (at least the one they've been advertising) Behr Ultra primer & paint in one (mouse ears). I also used one of the 3/8's SureLine roller covers. I must say, this paint went on easy and really did cover in one coat. And I'm talking the burgundy. VERY nice finish.

BTW, the guy at HD tlod me that there are two other colors that are identical....Ultra Pure White base and 12oz black. He said the formula comes up the same for all three.

So here are few other pics...

Tom,

Oh, boy you opened a can of worms now didn't you. Going off in a direction all your own without even asking if it was ok to do your own thing and go an paint the entire soffit black? Where in the Sam Hill did you think that was ever OK to do? Must have been a decision made in dimension X for sure after all this theater is all of ours ya know.

Now having properly chastised you for doing your own thing let me say that your solution to your "problem" is simple, elegant, and "works" for your situation. I think going all black solves the issues you were dealing with making it more theater like, hiding the asymmetry of the soffit, and cutting down reflections from the projector. You said that paint is cheap, well your solution to the "problem" is priceless. Well done.

Regards,

RTROSE

Oh, and what, no picture of you holding a dinky paint roller to make us think that you did the work? Come on man, are you slipping?

LOGANESS was out all day so no one to take the picture. If you look carefully at the first picture above, you'll see the 12" roller. Well, I have the LOGANESS convinced it's 12", anyway.

That is a great idea! However, you must start building before you're done with the theater to delay the "completion" date a while longer. I would hate for you to finish before me.

Start hating, brother, because I'm fired up!

I can't wait for the weekends to get here. I got work to do! This weekend I'm going to try my hand at building that storage cabinet that will go next to the equipment closet.

Ain't THAT the truth!

NOW comes the expensive parts...the projector, laminate floor, carpet, chairs, the rest of the speakers ...

I guess I've been lucky in this regard. So far, I've pretty much paid out of pocket as I go. A couple of times I took advantage of HD's 10% off 12 month no interest deals. Which turns out to be a pretty good argument for taking your time. Honestly, except for paying for the drywall hanging and finishing, I haven't really noticed a hit to the cash flow situation.

Now, if the Federal Government shuts down Friday night for more than 3 weeks, I could be in trouble.

Don't snooze on procuring a set of the Lowe's 10% off coupons. I found a place to get them online for cheap and have been using them for nearly every purchase at Lowe's and HD (they match the 10% discount). They have saved me a ton of money during my build.

PM me for details.

Well Tom, looks like your buddies in congress kicked the can down the street a bit more. Three more weeks of work (including a glorious recess for congress). If ever there was a time for contentious town hall meetings like we saw during the health care debate, now is it! Sadly, people don't seem to understand how epic the battle is that is looming.

In other news the TSA (Thousands Standing Around) is forming a union! Where of where will this lead? Increased productivity, better screening, shorter lunches and more efficient staff? Oh well, sorry for the rant. Government brings it out of me. Oh I remember how I got off on this...lack of progress and much standing around.

Back to the regularly scheduled programming....

A little frustrated with our current government policies and out of control spending are we? Without getting too deep into politics or personal beliefs, I feel your pain as I am one who "gets it" and understands that you are correct that the looming battle is epic for sure. I try to spread the word and a lot of the time it seemingly falls on deaf ears. Ah, but I digress, there is Tom's progress to talk about and if Tom can make progress surly Congress can balance the budget, right?

Yes, I am currently working closely with a large federal agency. I am seeing many, many things that piss me off, but I have nothing but contempt for people who stall, delay, and kick the can down the street.

Nothing but contempt I say.

Well, I feel better. now, if only Tom would post some pictures of his progress.

Don't get me started! I've been government contracting for a total of about 15 years.

Sorry CJ, pics will have to wait until after the weekend. I'm going to try my hand at building the little storage cabinet that will go next to the equipment closet. Basically, just a custom base cabinet.

Picture in your mind an open box. The two sides are 3/4" white laminate and the back is 1/2" mdf. Two white 3/4" white laminate nailers across the top at the front and back. The back is mounted inside a really cool dado slot. It is custom fit into it's little nook. It still needs a bottom base, a top and a face frame, but the top and face frame will wait until I make a final decision on the stain and top of the bar, as I want the cabinet to match.

There. There's your picture of my progress this weekend. Real pics when I get the base made and put it in place.

Let's just say I got a late start Sunday after hosting the neighborhood St. Pat's potluck Saturday night. I don't know if it was the really nice Irish single malt one of the neighbors brought or the Killian's Red. Fortunately, the dog has great bladder control.

And, yes I probably could have just put a few nailers on the sides of the nook and put in a front and a top and used the sides of the wall as the sides of the cabinet, but I'm trying to practice using the new stacked dado set BEFORE I get to the bar and find out I need to make some dadoes. I should start routing some pieces too. Oh, and practice with the dovetail jig.

Yea, but I have to give Tom props here...how many of us run in a circle who can blame Congress for their lack of progress? And no Haines...paying taxes and the temporary cash flow issue does not count.

OK, so I hate to post this here, but it looks as though someone we know has been busy outside the forum:

Can you see the guy sucking on that large brass thingie second from the left?

Here's a link to their site: http://www.swingshiftdc.com/ Well, SwingShift has a CD coming out and they sound pretty good (check out the clips on their site)! Any NoVA folks want to meet up for a HT Meet at their CD launch party at Blues Alley in DC on Monday April 25 at the 8:00pm show? RSVP to me or post here and we'll see if we can round up some tickets.

Hey, THANKS for the plug. I was going to try to keep it private, but, well, now the secret is out.

Probably should act fast...we tend to sell out the first show. We've been there 10 or 12 times now and almost every time sold out the first show (that's why they put us in there mid-week...when we tried to get in on a weekend, one of the managers told us they can put ANYBODY in there on a weekend and sellout the first show. Putting us in mid-week is a big bonus for the club).

And they usually let you stay for the second show for free. If the government is shut down I know most you NOVA guys won't have to get up in the morning. I'm just sayin'.
