Looks like my PC can read/write from/to only DVD+R DL (dual layer) media....will I be able to burn DVD9 in this format?

smakovits's Avatar smakovits 09:05 PM 12-30-2009
Will one actually need to burn it to disc? Cant one extract the ISO file or whatever format it is in to play on a media player of choice? kezug, if your burner is newer than say 5 years, you are fine, you will just need the media. or there is also the option of splitting it into 2 DVD5's, but that discussion belongs elsewhere...

Thanks...my burner is only 3 years old.

From what I read, yes, you can mount the image to play on an HTPC for example. But for me, I will be burning to disc and playing on my Blu-ray Disc player.

Doug - essentially dual layer equals DVD9. You should be fine.

No need to burn it. I will be pulling it up via XBMC (my media software of choice). The format will appear to your media player just as if you had ripped a Blu-Ray disc to your media library.

I hope this project hasnt been abandoned.....

Im a long time follower, first time poster.

Ive been watching these posts for ages and am really in awe of the people who have been working on this mammoth project.

I must say when suggestions were requested as to what should be added to the disc i was really suprised to find out how similar tastes are across the board.

Thanks again for such an interesting forum and Im looking forward to the release.

Dan

Dan - rest assured this project has not been abandoned. In fact, we're revving up right now.

Hey guys.. just a quick update. Erik is working on the interface and getting that buttoned down. I'm in the middle of getting material gathered (with some help from CJO).

I'll let you know once Erik gets everything he needs and can start on the authoring.

An ETA would be nice for those of us stuck in suspense....
markdj's Avatar markdj 03:58 AM 01-19-2010
I think the problem might be getting permission from the respective movie studios in using 30 second clips of their material, though if it was seen as a free sample, free advertising, with e.g. a link to buy the full movie they might agree.

Good luck getting anyone in the movie or music industry to do something creative and intelligent for their business model. If there's an opportunity for them to make a stupid decision and completely miss the big picture, don't worry they will do it.

We haven't forgotten. The project is still alive. Progress is happening, just not as quickly as we had hoped.

Since Apple is so good as setting expectations about yet to be released (and yet to be announced) thingymabobs, I'll follow their lead and say that the first thingymabob should arrive sometime in the first half of the year.

Yes, the red tape is certainly a significant aspect of this project's critical path.

Oh, and welcome to AVS!

Luckily this will be free, is the best form of free advertising, and will encourage people to part with their money to buy the movies.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program...

Honestly, I realize you probably feel the need to remain "professional," but at the end of the day, you guys are doing something for us .. for free.

My advice: to those who are impatient and want an ETA so badly, make your own disk.

When this disk is ready, it will be ready.

I'm curious. Is there a to-do list somewhere? Maybe some of us can pitch in and help. However minor that may be.

True, but we also don't want to leave people hanging.

This is the exact mindset Steve and I have. I am at one with the lack of real schedules, deadlines, or forward looking statements.

Send a PM to Steve with your contact info and he'll add you to the list. Lot's of people have generously offered to help with various things. At some point in time those folks will be called upon to contribute.

Oh, oh. That sounds familiar, oh Zen Godfather!

Someday, and that day may never come, I'll call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day accept this justice as gift on my daughter's wedding day.
