I've been trying really hard to be prudent recently and direct cash where only absolutely necessary. But last night I was on ebay and came across 4 x JBL 322CT's for A$450 and 2 x JBL 328C's for A$99 - brand new too!

These retail at about $1300 and $650 each respectively!

Bargain!

If we stay in this house I'll use the 322's at Atmos ceiling speakers, if we move, we'll have the mother of all distributed audio in the kitchen or garage or something.

These are the 322CT's

Here are the 328's

I've been pretty busy with other stuff. Progress seems to have slowed again....everything just takes so damn long.

Here is a WIP shot of the door (that hardwood is just being used for the clamp):

Believe me when I say its killing me!

I have their baby brother's in my living room system (somewhere buried in this thread - my avatar actually) and they are awesome. When I was having the new ones made I got an email from Mundorf saying words to the effect of "you ain't seen nothing yet"

Which coupled with what I believe is the best mid range money can buy in the TD6M (save perhaps the PHL's I use now) I am very excited about this build.

....as for timing.....well.....end of the year, maybe....unlikely

Absolutely sick deal on the JBL's! The Australian dollar is currently at .73 to the US dollar...making the 322's each about $82usd and the 328's $36usd...the person you stole them from actually shipped the speakers? :-)

I have these as well and will use 6 322's for sides and 6 328's for Atmos; nicely discounted but I paid about double shipped what you did.

The room is looking good!

Things are progressing. The sparky (that's Australian for Electrician) has started his bit and I am slowly chipping away at various things:

Riser (went for R2.5 polyester):

Stage is finished, I am being lazy and just doing a straight one. I think it looks good though:

The little saddles I have made for the lights:

Ok now for the door. People always say they're the weakest link in rooms. I am hoping not in this one. In saying that I sort of stuffed up in that the swing of the door means it needs quite a gap to close. Not sure how much of an issue that will be, but the seals will be on the outside....

Bottom seal:

Hinges on:

Door Closed/Open:

Hing detail:

Now I know what you're all thinking. Stupid idiot has put it on back to front because clearly acoustic treatments go in the hole right? wrong. I am filling that with multiple layers of GG and 12mm MDF. Hence the big MOFO hinges.

Yes I know, absolute bargain. I put a bid on them and thought, there is no way they'll sell for that.....well they did. The official re-seller in Australia too! so its not shady!

As an aside, Dennis Erskine told Shawn who subsequently told me that the 322's are not suitable for Atmos ceiling duty. Not sure why, I am guessing Dennis doesn't like the dip in response at [7]khz? or the 120 degree? coverage is too wide? not sure. Either which way, money is tight right now and they'll do until I cam afford something better. Or as I mentioned, we move

In saying all that, I've heard many good things about them, but that's what he said.

Please post if you find out why Dennis does not recommend the 322's for Atmos. I was gonna use them! Thanks!!

Messed up and said I would have six 322's for Atmos...meant to say 328's (impaired posting/too many beers). I decided to go with 328's as I felt the off-axis response would be better than the 322's larger cone. JBL's charts seem to bear that out...big hole at 8khz in the 322's off-axis response. JBL lists 90 degrees dispersion for the 322 and 120 for the 328. The 328's have a dip too but it looks to be half as deep (but closer to the voice region at 5khz). Don't like the 322's dip, but maybe the 922az can help straighten that out a little.

But yeah, unreal deal on those -- and sometimes I wonder if some of the criteria that makes a product "not suitable for the application" might not present as such a bone-headed maneuver when implemented.

My Favourite day of the year today - The Bank Holiday!

The Mrs is away so I had to do the pre-school run this morning and afternoon, but still got plenty done.

Lights are in, I just need to paint the cans/saddles I made. 4 in the middle, 3 in each soffit, one LED strip, not yet installed, two in the riser and one in the "foyer" (which is sensor triggered). I also finished lining the soffits with pegboard and finished the bass trap above the screen

Here are some WIP shot of filling the door:

8 layers later:

The way I fixed the gap issue was to put a bit of moulding on it. This will squeeze into a very thin EPDM gasket (if it works) and then the whole perimeter will have another dual gasket made of EPDM.....if I can make it work. I have some pond liner left over from the aquaponics so I am hoping it'll save me $300 in Raven seals.

Not much to report this weekend. I've been painting (the door and light fittings) and also started the columns, there will be two like this one and two with a rectangular box on the bottom instead of the curve - these will be for the subs

@Peter M

What sort of velcro did you use for your panels? and how much? i.e. full perimeter or just the corners etc?

Hi Peter,

I got this from Bunnings - Hookz

Each panel up to about 1300mm wide has a 50mm long piece in each corner.

Beyond 1300mm wide I added extra pieces mid way along the top and bottom.

I've been beavering away without a lot of visual progress. Started laying the floor this weekend, its called Reclaimed Antique Oak from Quickstep - looks better in the flesh:

Fabrics have arrived:

This was a fun job this afternoon, took a few hours to cut all this, its for the ceiling and soffit panels:
