Other than the screen is anything going over the insulation on the front wall?

Looking good so far. Japan is one of my "must go before I die" places.
One quick question, what camera/lens are you using for the photos?

Good luck with the rest of the project.

Great pic updates.
I may have missed it, but what is going on the floor?
Carpets?
Did you figure out seating?
What are you doing for calibration?

Mike

I am carpeting the floor and I should have pics today of the carpet installed.

Calibration, I was going to go with Audyssey for the 7 speakers and I was thinking of a separate sub EQ. Then make the finer adjustments using REW.

I fired up the two front left and right speakers without any calibration or a sub (they are set to small and crossed at 80 hz, so not much bass below 80hz) and I already feel like I have surround sound. I have no idea what this means in the whole scheme of things, but I had some weird pressure in my ears when listening to some music at about 55db's. Anyway, it may not mean anything as they are not calibrated as of yet.

If you're feeling a weird pressure, and I presume that also means uncomfortable, in your ears at 55dB I think that might amount to a bit of a problem. 55dB is in the vicinity of typical household background noise and average conversation and I couldn't begin to imagine how you'll be feeling when you operate the speakers at their intended capacity (well perhaps I can, ever been diving with plugged sinuses and very seriously contemplated staying down and drowning rather than surfacing and risk what feels like a head explosion?) probably will be something like that. When first entering the room and/or having a conversation what's your initial knee-jerk impression of the sound, does it appear really messed up and weird and perhaps a little disorientating or does it sound natural and clear, that might point to where problem likely lies. Regardless, it sounds like it's time to perform some tests, do you have the gear for this?

How's the carpet? Eagerly anticipating those pics.

Yes, it is a little uncomfortable, it sounds like I have sound coming from everywhere around me. I will have to check and see if I have Audyssey turned off, b/c if I don't it will still have the room settings from my old living room setup which will obviously cause problems.

The room sounds great when talking to people it, nothing seems too dead.

I do have REW, so once I get room setup I will be performing tests.

BTW, I should have some carpet pics soon.

It's probably just one of those "stupid" things then, when you finally figure it out the first response out of your mouth is #@&% I'm stupid.

I really do hope it is something stupid like that. I suppose I should not be making any comments until it is setup correctly. I am just hoping that it is not the bass below 125hz not being absorbed due to the bunker style room. If it does end up being this, I also am hoping there is something I can do. There I am again , getting ahead of myself... I am such a worry wart.

I wouldn't worry about it, there's a fix for everything and fiberglass is cheap. Have you listened to the speakers full range? what about opening the doors, does that change anything?

I don't think there is enough fiber glass that will absorb those lows. Concrete rooms pose a whole new problem I guess?

I have not tried any of those. Will give it a go once I get home.

Very impressive Theatre Dave, your A lucky man & cant believe how quickly
its all moving along..

Yes Your right in that Concrete rooms Do tend to require more Acoustic treatment per say, But in your case nothing that cant be fine tuned which I would suspect is the case here & A normal requirement for most HT's ..

Besides Your Got Dennis Erskine to help sort/fine tune your room ..
Without Dennis Being on Site Its a matter of taking A few inroom measurments and having Dennis Analize the Data allowing him to offer further advise if need be on remaining Accoustic issues..

Without The Expertise of Dennis on site The hardest part to get right IMO would be the EQing, Besides Audyssey..

Cheers..

Getting closer,

The carpet all done,

With the lights above the stage turned off.

The lights above the stage and down the sides. The down lights are white , But I will be painting them flat black.

The carpeted stage , with my temporary amp rack....

A pic of the back of the room,

The front wall, those are handles so I can take the access door down to the sealed baffle wall once the subs are installed.

Close up of the catalysts

Without the grill.

I would imagine this is not common in Japan. how are the folks building this reacting to it?

This seems (at least to an outsider) to be VERY different than traditional japanese (read: small) residences and living spaces.

You would be right considering the average size of a Japanese house. The wife dose not care and really has no interest in the room apart from the fact that she does not want to hear subs in any part of the house or outside to cause trouble with any neighbours. Other than that it is all good.

What a difference a carpet makes!! Looking really great.

I'm really interested in how you tackle integrating Audyssey and manual equalization since there is no easy way to exclude Audyssey from re-EQing your bass. I have a similar problem and I've been experimenting with first manually EQing the bass as flat as possible, so that Audyssey has minimal effect, then creating a new set of bass filters on top that add a slight "house curve". I wonder how Dennis guides you through this process.
