Hello everyone,
After many years of building expensive homes I finally get to build my own.
My favorite part of the entire construction by far, is the home theater room. I have been on this forum looking for a while now and appreciate the depth of knowledge that people here have and are willing to share.

I decided to use Dennis Erskine's services to layout the theater so I may have as near perfect of a room as possible.

As far as the equipment goes, I have yet to decide (I am waiting to see how much money I have left over after the home build). What I would like and what I can afford at the end may not be the same but hopefully with some luck I will be able to get as close as possible to my dream.

I have seen some excellent theaters here and really liked the Sandmans theater which I have used as inspiration.

I am going to start documenting the build and update as much as time permits.

I appreciate your comments on the room itself and suggestions on how I can make it better.

Room is 16 x 21 with 10 feet of headroom. The front area around the AT screen will be GOM and considering fabric frames for the rest of the room. I haven't yet decided on flooring but will go with carpet or cork.

The home is controlled by an Elan G! system which will also be controlling the home theater lights, projector, heating and cooling.

Attached are some pictures of the current state of the room and the layout.

I am finally able to update this thread.
I had to put the theater on hold while my wife insisted on finishing what she calls essential things like the rest of the house.

Here is the current state of the room:

Here are some construction photos of riser and insulation:

I now need to finalize equipment:

So far considering the following:

Receiver: Integra 50.4
2 in wall Subs - Episode SUB Series In-Wall with Dual 8 inch Woofers
7 x Episode Speakers 900 series - 3 in front are behind screen - rest are in columns
Screen - Acoustically Transparent 110 inch 2.35:1 - Undecided on model and make
Projector - Undecided - My needs are a lot of gaming as well as movies with some 3d - would appreciate suggestions in the 3 to 6 thousand dollar price range
Led lights for the ceiling and columns.
Seats - Undecided

Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Looks great. I love the ceiling . I'm assuming since Dennis helped with your layout, he also determined your screen size. Can you tell us how far back your 1st row will be from the 110" wide 2.35:1 screen?

It's hard to tell, but it doesn't look like you have a ton of room from the face of your screen wall framing to the drywall behind it. Are you going to be able to squeeze your speakers in there??

Looking forward to watching your progress.

Spaceman,
Thanks for the encouragement.
I have 20 inches behind the screen.
The distance from screen to the center of the seat is approximately 10 feet.

I wanted to get some opinion from the experts here on my current choice of equipment and to see if there are any suggestions on AT screen based on this equipment.

Current list:

JVC DLA X55R

EPISODE 900 Series speakers with 2 Dual subs. (7.2 system)

Integra 50.4 Receiver.

Based on the above can anyone recommend a good AT screen ?

Your opinions are appreciated.

I need an opinion on the number of chairs for the two rows.
Due to the door to electronics rack on the right side of the room and the rear door position I am only able to accommodate 3 chairs in the second row.
I was planning on doing 4 chairs in the first row.

Will this look funny?
My wife thinks I should do 3 on both rows or it will look stupid.

We have 4 people in our family and that would mean one person is in the back row all the time. I would prefer to do 4 in front and 3 in rear.

Please post your thoughts and or opinions. I am really confused.

I have the JVC RS45 and a 139" diagonal AT screen. I built the screen using the Seymour XD woven material and I like it a LOT. You can see the texture from 10' back on pure-white parts of the image (clouds and such) but I'm the only one that's ever noticed. I guess you will now too, though. Sorry to ruin it! tongue.gif

You can order a free sample from the Seymour website.

What about 2 + 3? Parents in front, kids in the back?

That is an option as well but my kids are teenagers now so we will have to fight for the front row smile.gif

Do you think that 4 in front and 3 in back will look funny?

Here is the back of the theater with the doors...
Sorry for the mess in the pictures but the wife is using it as her junk room right now mad.gif

Maybe 4 in each row if the middle for each is a loveseat? Or 4 with loveseat in first row, 3 without in the back?
chomperoni's Avatar chomperoni 11:35 PM 01-08-2013
I've thought about it but back row can only fit three chairs. (Darned doors)
I would prefer 4 individual chairs for front.
I may be over thinking this but I just want to make sure that I am not making a big mistake.
