My first thread, so please be nice

I am planning my HT and I want to control my AV equipment with an iPhone or Touch. I have an idea of what I want to do but I have not heard of anyone else doing it.

I am already set on Insteon to control all the lights in my house (including HT) with an iPhone using the Smartlinc.

So here is what I am planning:

iPhone --> smartlinc (via internet) --> IRlinc transmitter --> AV equipment

My question is has anyone done this or would this even work?

Does it work well or is it a pain to use?

Is there a better option to use an iPhone to control AV? (I don't want to add an IR transmitter to my iPhone)

Thanks in advance!
Brent

Brent,

Where are you located? We are going to be discussing this exact topic at our Spring HEMI Meet (in SE Michigan). If you are local, you should stop by.

Hi Nick, I'm in the Twin Cities Metro area and I doubt the wifey would want to go to MI for our vacation :/

Are you discussing Insteon specifically or iPhone controls or ...?

We have a remote control topic, but will specifically be covering the iphone/itouch. Itai (AVS user cubesys) will be discussing this. Do a search on his name. He has an app for the iphone called iRule. Here is a link with more info:

I just purchased the iRule software this past weekend and have been tinkering with it this week. So far, I think it is a great product and I believe it will work with what you're trying to accomplish. I think there's a 14 day free trial on the website. www.iruleathome.com

This has been discussed rather thoroughly in the Remote Control Forum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=93

A bit over the top but I reccomend a Control 4 home automation system. I'll be able to control everything from my iPhone and much much more.
