In case anyone is interested, the quote below from the Seymour website - in particular the line in bold - is what convinced me to go curved with an A-lens

Quote:
Our curved frame option features a 40' radius, which is perfect for fixing the pincushion, or bow-tie shaped distortion from anamorphic lenses that stretch a 16:9 ratio projector to 2.37. Using an anamorphic lens will improve your resolution by 33%, your light output by up to 20%, and immersion by three mojos.
Well, and finding a UH-480 for less than $1K helped too So far, I've been fortunate to find the big ticket stuff at sale prices. The exceptions to that are the screen and the carpet. Oh, did I mention I ordered carpet last week? Humph. I guess my memory is getting bad

I think TMcG is the deal master on the forums. He was the one that put me on the lens. There are a lot of deals to be had on eBay, but you have to keep looking. Takes lots of patience to sort through all the overpriced junk.

That's a fact. TMcG finds all the deals. He's not afraid to have champagne tastes on malt liquor budget, and he's making it happen. I would be afraid to commit to the designs he's implementing for fear of not finding the deal and being forced to pay retail - but he's making it work.

So, what's the carpet schedule, J_P_A?

First week of June at the moment. There are still a few things that I need to finish up. I don't think I took a picture of the carpet, so I can't post it, but it is patterned (think waves). It's a very obvious pattern if you look at it in one direction, but very subtle from the other three. We are going to have to be careful about the direction they install it.

I'm getting pretty stoked about this! My plan is to get the trim up (with the exception of the base boards), and possibly get the supports for my screen up before the carpet goes in. This will only leave getting the acoustic treatments in and then the fabric frames, but I'm still hoping to hang the treatments in stages. I have them all, already. We'll just have to see how much time I have to spend on it.

It will depend on whether I can think of a way to make the spaces between the engineered treatments look nice or not. Right now I'm thinking of building fabric covered frames to cover the absorption between the engineered treatments. I'm hoping I can make it work. If not, I'll go with the same 'ol humdrum fabric covered walls

Haha! I figured somebody would jump on that slow pitch

I actually like the fabric walls, but I would like to do something to set my space apart from all the other theaters here on AVS. Your room has top shelf woodwork. HF is going steampunk. TMcG has the Art Deco style.

I'd like to do something different if I can pull it off.

if im picturing in my head correctly, i think we may be trying the same thing. i was struggling w/ finished wall designs until i saw the 2 naked treatments someone posted in your thread. i'll find out later this week if my imagination will be a success or failure. im going w/ vicoustic multifuser wood over rpg bad panels in the front half of the room. the back half im going w/ listen audio wood diffusers.

I really like that look! I wish I had the budget to go with the wood engineered panels. That's another concern for me with leaving the treatments exposed. I'm not sure if the Quadfusors will still look like plastic after they've been painted. We'll just have to see.

I was hoping to have a big update today, but unfortunately it just hasn't worked out. We spent last week in Disney, and I had a day yesterday to do a little in the theater. I was planning to hang the crown to finish up the last few things before my carpet install. Unfortunately, I discovered that the crown that I have, which is already primed and painted, has the wrong spring angle. How did that happen you ask? Well, I picked several different profiles, some from Lowes and some from Builders First Source. I finally settled on a profile and cut and installed nailers all around the room. I went back to BFS where I thought it came from and I double checked the profile against what they had and it matched, so I bought enough to do the room. Turns out, it's exactly the same profile as the trim I wanted, but with a 10 degree different spring angle...... So I wasted a day yesterday messing around with it. Unfortunately, I probably need to call and have my carpet install moved back by a few weeks to give me time to get everything finished up now. Bummer

its hard to tell on quadfusors since they are on the ceiling. i painted mine black w/ a few coats. as far as i can tell they look good not really plasticly looking but since they are out of sight out of mind, its to hard to say they are or arent. if you wanted the wood pieces could you set the walls up and save until you can buy them? even if its 1 at a time

10 days @ Disney is hard core. My wife would love you.

I'm actually flying down to Tampa today for 10 days of FL sun . Gonna swing by the local HD on way to my Dads down there see if they have these $2 porter cable Brad nails Ryan talked about. I do want. He can drive them home for me (with my dog)

Yeah, you pretty well have to know what you want ..... As in a part number. Otherwise it's a pain. Those guys are really geared toward dealing with contractors.

Sorry, lazy on my typing there. We were only in Disney for three days. We spent a few days before and after at the beach. The family really enjoyed themselves. I'm not much of a Disney person. For that matter I'm not much of a vacation person. I'd rather be home building something.
