Columnless. I'm planning to build some shelves/boxes around the surrounds. That way I can get rid of the brackets and have somewhere to stop the fabric on the walls. I'll also be able to build some fabric panel covers for the surrounds.

Dude, are you made of leprechauns? Cause that was awesome!

What carpet is that? That's one of the things I'm trying to decide. I have 15 samples right now and it's a super tough decision and It's driving me nuts..

I'll have to check with the carpet store I bought from to find out the manufacturer, but it's Ocean Bliss in Smoky Pearl color.

Your speakers are upside down..... Lame humor alert!!!!

Are those the two Lil'Wreckers the left and right speakers are positioned on? All DIY front stage is awesome and hopefully inspiring to others.

So shall we discuss the specifics of flipping a speaker upside down in terms of vertical directivity?

Or is that too geeky ?

As far as flipping the speakers, I'm up for it. What you guys got? I didn't put much thought into it when I put them up there. Thinking about it now, I don't imagine the vertical response will be symmetric. I'm not sure how it will differ, but the question would be is the above or below axis response "worse" and is it better to have that part of the response aimed at the ceiling treatments or the carpet?

I'm with you on the black/gray/brown. I'm thinking I'm going to try to find some bulbs with a slightly different color temp to push it back in the gray direction.

Let's talk to screen sizes...... The screen is 160"W 2.37.

I'm having some second thoughts.......

I could have gone two feet wider. There's still space on either side!

No-no! We're passed that!

All joking aside, I really like the size of the screen. A screen this size with my seating distance goes against all the recommendations, but (as of right now) I would do it again in a minute!

I believe on the subject of my joke the real answer is speakers are often more directional vertically - with the bottom of the speaker being more narrow in pattern than the top for highs, and vice versa.

Just in case you want to obsess over the fact speakers have more bass below them and more highs above them when placed right side up with a typical 2 way arrangement.

I'm way behind. The AVR came in on Thursday while they were laying carpet. I decided to make a push to meet my original MVP, so I took Friday off got to work. We actually watched a movie on Saturday night!

It was epic!

My first listening impressions can be summed up as

ZOMGBBQ THIS IS AMAZING! Same for the video.

Now that the initial high is wearing off, I had (just a little) more time to play with things, and my impressions of the audio experience are coming back in line. First off, I used Audyssey XT to calibrate the room. I did a quick 3 point calibration, and the next day an eight point. Over the past two days I've realized that Audyssey completely neuters the bass. It's setting my mains to full range and crossing them at 40 Hz to the subs. This is horrible for bass response.

Next, I need to play with the LCR positioning and toe-in. The sound stage is bad compared to using the front two surrounds as my stereo speakers (that's the way I listened while I was putting my mains together).

The surround field is not good at this point either. Very little coming from the rears. The sweet spot is limited to the middle seat.

All-in-all, I've got a lot of work to do, but I'm not sure when measurements will happen. The Marantz is pretty limited in what it can do for calibration. Mostly levels and distances or Audyssey from what I can tell. I'll need a DSP to do much else. I'd like to tweak all that before I put up treatments.

Also, there are a few other things I need to get done first. Two of my chairs are having issues and I need to get that fixed (review coming once everything is sorted out). I also need to get my A-lens up and working. I need boxes/shelves for my surrounds so that I can turn my wife loose on fabric panels.

Still, it's awesome to have a functioning room. We've watched two or three movies since Saturday night, and we are loving the huge screen!

You have treatments up ? That's going to make a big difference. Audyssey is junk. Turn that crap off. You have a mic and REW, do it right. You can't fix physics with electronics. You did not waste time reading Toole book or the MoHA and buying a calibrated mic to run Audyssey.

No treatments yet. That's one of things I want to see is how much difference does it make to what I actually hear. I'm (fairly) confident I can measure the difference, but I want to know if, and how much, I can actually hear going from an untreated room to a treated room. I'm hoping for a huge improvement, but I'm skeptical until I hear it for myself.

Sadly, the Marantz seems to be pretty limited in its user configurable DSP settings. It appears to be limited to levels and distances. I'll have to get a DSP before I can do anything fancy....... Looks like a miniDSP is in my future!

You can hear the difference in the treated room just talking in it. You don't need a mic or fancy gear to see it. As soon as you put them up have a conversation with someone it should be obvious the difference. I don't think this is an area where you'll have to struggle to see value or a difference.
