We just closed on our new home in Grand Rapids, MI, so now its time to start on the basement. No time to do most of the work so we contracted a lot out. The basement finish area is about 1100 sq ft and will include the theater, bar / game area, bedroom and bathroom.

We've been ordering a lot of pieces over the past couple months so its all starting to come together. Steam shower unit arrived yesterday for the bathrooom, 9 Angela Plus Theater seats in black should be here soon, AE4000 and 130" Cinemascope screen will be ordered Tuesday. Framing lumber was dropped today and the builder snapped the lines. I grabbed a nice Middle Atlantic rack from IUSteve on here and it fits under the stairs perfectly!

Theater will be 9 seat, row of 4 and 5. Wetbar will seat 7, custom built maple bar and cabinets and includes undermount beverage center and Kegerator. Wife said it has to be Chicago Bears colors on the walls (not sure how to work Orange in except maybe a stripe in the wall).

I'm just doing the low voltage wiring and slate floor in the bar area....and paint, so no big projects. Neighbor is building my columns in his shop.

Build pictures coming as we progress. Plan is to have all but carpet in by Mid August....wish me luck!

What are the room dimensions? Game area? What sort of games?

First theater and projector? IMO - AE4000 a good projector choice.

Theater is 16'8" Wide by 18'9" long. Bar / Game area is just basically a lounge, though we have a full size Air Hockey table. Mostly just a kick back area for parties and watching sports. Bar spills out to a 20 x 14 patio bbq area with a 32 x 12 deck above. Putting a 50" plasma above the bar for sports (one of 5 in the house now).

I just wish the steam shower was going in the master, now I have to go down 2 floors for a better shower experience.

Well first theater since my Infocus X1 days back in 2003.

I'm in the middle of installing an Elk M1G Alarm system along with a Homeseer box for automation and lighting. House is a mix of Z-Wave and UPB lighting, Z-Wave locks and thermostat control. Also pre-wired for cameras (2 inside and 4 outside) so we can keep an eye on the kids from work during the summer and after school. Locations are wired with Dual Cat5e and 18-2 so I can got IP cam or use video baluns. Every room has motion sensors and I'll continue that in the basement. Also plan a starfield ceiling, but 1st stage is just the drop and trim for it. I'll use UPB to control the theater lighting since I can run it off hacked color nooks and ipads, and it provides two way communication.

I have a Onkyo RC-160, but I was considering getting the Denon 2112. Either way I wanted to grab some Emotiva amps, LCR at first, then add from there. Other gear is a PS3 (will be my Bluray until I get an Oppo) and an Xbox 360. Also have an HP MediaSmart server with 5.5TB of storage. Holds all the music and ripped DVD's currently. I have an elemental designs A2-300 sub from the other house that I will use for now. I was going to wire the columns for future 8" subs that can be driven from an amp in the rack.

Looking over ebay for an old Cisco POE switch for future cameras. Was thinking of grabbing a Cisco Gigabit too, but for the price and locations I need Gig, think I will stick with my trendnet gig switch (bedrooms have two cat 5 each so the kids can stream movies and music from the MediaSmart server.......4 to 5 kids at home depending on the time of year).

One question, we have DirectTV with 4 boxes now, one HD DVR and 3 HD. Unsure how to handle downstairs. I was considering just getting one box to feed the plasma and the theater (for Bears Games mostly) and rack mounting it so I can control via IR from either location. Any better ideas? I don't really want the cost of 2 extra boxes since they won't get a lot of use.

The best part is the wife is very into all of this and has been encouraging many upgrades and purchases!

The worst part is some of the area the theater is going into was designed to house my other passion, a full size 737-800 simulator with 180 degree, 3 projector wraparound views. This was caught in time and the third bay added to the garage to house the sim. Garage is being insullated and finished now, with extra circuits dedicated to the sim.

Here's a early build shot. Its back in pieces since we just moved. Waiting on the shell to arrive in about 2 months to finish putting it back together.

No motion, but some folks gets dizzy from watching the view. I'm used to it.

Uses three short throw PJ's with Image warping and edge blending software.

Here's a picture of another friend's sim with the shell off to give you an idea of the view.....

I was looking for a Emotiva Amp originally however I found a Sherwood A965 7 channel for a real nice price. Also picked up an APC S15 Power Conditioner and battery backup fairly cheap.

Still undecided on whether to use my Onkyo RC-160 for now, or get the Onkyo RC-370 or Denon 2112CI for slightly less. Any Opinions?

Nice pictures of the 737-800 sim. Did not know people had set ups like that at home. It looks very close to the ones I fly. Really like the wrap around screen. I am guessing this is a big hit with your friends.

Nice Job!

Well the RC160 doesn't have pre-outs and neither does the lower end Denon. So much for that.

I was really focused on finding a Receiver with Network ability for streaming, however I don't think it will matter as I will have a HTPC in the same rack with the other gear (i3-2100 / H67 / 8GB / 2U rack mount).

After a lot of looking I found a NAD T747 that looks like it will go well with the Sherwood A965. The Onkyo RC160 can take over bar and patio duty from the rack location now, will just pull some new IR lines to those locations.

Next question......is the OPPO really worth it?

...in short....YES. I have the -83. I purchased it right beofre they released the 3D one (yes, the new one has Netflix built in too).

It will play everything that I throw at it, and it has a ton of customization options. It is also a must if you are going to run a 2.39:1 setup, as you can move the subtitles around.

Good luck...and Holy Cow - that's some home simulator!

OOC what wuld it cost to do a SIM setup like that? is there anything special going on (other than 3 short throw projectors and blending)? The cockpit hardware is key I guess, wonder what that costs?

Framing on the basement starts Wednesday morning at 7am, but I will be headed to the airport at 5am for a business trip to Clearwater through Friday. I have notes all over the basement for our builder. Will have some more pictures of the build on Saturday.

The rack is getting populated now. So far we have:

APC S15 Power Conditioner and Battery Backup (12 outlet)
Sherwood Newcastle A965 & Channel Amp
NAD T747 Receiver
PS3
Xbox 360
HP MediaSmart Server with 5.5TB of storage

Building at 2U sever based on an MSI H67 board, i3-2100 CPU with 8GB and an SSD.

Will be adding one of the new Homeseer Hometroller SE's soon for the lighting / thermostat and the rest of the home automation.

Panny AE4000, mount and 138" Cinemascope screen being ordered today......I was going to get the 130" but the Mrs noted the 138" was cheaper

On a side note, the other new neighbor was over looking at my sim in pieces in the garage. He's an airbus driver for Delta and wants me to let him know the moment I'm finished putting it back together

Leave it to the wives to find the best deal! So much to comment on here John:

Beautiful new home - who says the housing market is dead?

That flight simulator is fantastic...like you'll have two theaters!

The best thing is having a wife who supports and participates in getting it done! I know for me as I get closer my wife's interest and support is intensifying.
