Heres pictures of me building the step. The step isnt very big but it exactly matches everything in the room. The soffit above the stage is a mirrored representation of it. And when I build the risers it will match as well. Its almost too small to use as a step but my stage isnt very high anyway so its more for looks.

I think ive seen most people on here using 2x4,6,8s to build their steps, etc. Im new at carpentry but at this point ive given up using that wood unless its for framing. I cant stand how twisted and not straight lumber is. I now make everything out of hardwood plywood, rip it to exact sizes and use a router to create strength. Its more precise, easier at this point and i know everything is exact and straight.

I didnt fill the steps with sand. My floor is so uneven the gap is over 3/4s of an inch. Plus there wotn be any speakers on the steps. I filled them with insulation. Also, Im not sure if I mentioned it but I put a bottom layer of OSB under my stage. Same reason with the floor being so uneven. I didnt want sand pouring out everywhere.

heres a bad panorama pic of the stage after the first layer of OSB

and the stage with the top layer put on the step. It was getting late last night so I didnt feel like breaking out the green glue to put on the second layer on the stage. Ill maybe do that today. But my Hurricanes play in the ACC championship game at 1 so that cuts into work time!

I know it's too late for you, but for the benefit of guys getting ready to build and fill the stage, most of us put a layer of roofing felt down, build the stage on it, line the cavities with plastic and then fill with sand. Stops any squesking against the floor, keeps the sand dry and stops it from spilling underneath.

Well we worked for 15 hours yesterday so I didn't feel like posting pics at night, and now at the airport.

We got a lot finished though. First I cut the ecose foam and stacked them in the front corners of the stage. I then covered the rest of the front wall. I used washers and 3 in screws to hold them on the front wall. I cut and screwed a board on the side of the corner pieces to hold them in place.

Next tony got going on the electric. We created two new 20 amp breakers. One for inside the theater and one for the closet where all the electronics will be. We wires all the light in the room and made the first hole in my sound proof bunker. My room was made w no electric or lights in it. I did the sound proofing first and and adding the electric after.

To put the lighting above the stage we had to create the screen wall and finish the soffit. These will make more sense with pictures.

At the end of the day I even made the majority of the riser. It's all framed out, including a 2' by 4' area filled w sand where the sub will lie on.

It looks like its going to be a theater finally!

And go Hurricanes!

Just ordered XT and 4k samples from Chris at Seymour. I was leaning toward 4k because of my seating distance but I might as well try and compare first.

Heres some updates to the model that reflect a lot of the changes we made, including the colors. The model doesnt have the trim and crown but its a good representation

I dont have a pic of it but as I said before the second layer and green glue went on the stage. I got the 2 inch ecose foam from Bryan at GIK and cut it into triangles for the corners and put it up on the back wall. I used 3 inch screws and washers. I also put a strip on the edge of the foam to hold it into place

After getting up the foam I built the screen wall. When I first put up the 2x4 on the ceiling I did the calculations assuming it was a 8 foot board. It wasnt until everything looked off center did I realize its a 94 inch not 96. But no harm no foul its just there to hold up the screen. The stacked 2x4s on the bottom are cut to size to put into place once I have the screen and know the exact height of it.

Here it is, the first hole in the bunker!! As I said before I sound proofed everything first, so the room has had no lights or electric this entire time. Dont worry ill put some acoustic sealant in the hole!

Also, started the riser. I filled the area where the subwoofer will go with sand. I didnt put the front on yet because I wasnt sure how I wanted to have openings for the riser bass trap. The actual riser will come out another 7.5 inches too for the step. But ill build all of that out of plywood not ****** 2x8s.

Gotta restock with some new tools now that im learning to be a carpenter. Probably my favorite part about building this theater is how much im learning and ideas I have for other areas in the house. Whats sad though is the theater, which is supposed to be your pride and joy, is going to be my worst wood work! But im sure itll still look good smile.gif

My screen samples arrived today! Looking forward to setting them up tonight and checking them out. Its sad how much effort ive put into scrutinizing every detail, yet when it was shinning on grey drywall I thought it looked pretty good. I'll be happy to see it on real material and see a big difference.

I just changed the thread title. It was Redskinema originally, before a hammer was lifted, or a model designed. But now we've settled on more of a black and vanilla color scheme so it doesnt really fit anymore. We had thought it was going to be red and gold. I posted earlier the carpet and fabric selections. Ill take any suggestions anyone has!

Has anyone else made either their soffit or another part of the theater removable to act as access panels for future wires?

I dont think I like the idea of running conduit. I think it would be too hard to do. Ive spent a great deal of time thinking about making my soffit have access panels. Another thought I have now is the run everything in the soffit. Then close it up. But I have a 6 inch board that comes down from the soffit that goes above the acoustic panels. Its going to be mounted 3.5 inches off of the wall to look flush with the acoustic panels. I could make it so you remove the acoustic panels and then wires can be run up underneath of that.

Heres a sample:

LL

Right now I have these T's placed around the room to secure it. I could remove the Ts and shorten them by an inch so theres space below them

LL

This would allow me to go completely around the room with any new wire I need and access any of the columns or the stage wall.

Thoughts? Im going ot have an 11.2 system. So im not worried about speaker wire. But I know im going to forget a network cable to control something, or need a new IR cable in the future, or to hook up an xbox kinnect, something.
