^^ I'll let you know as soon as I can get the 7702. I've got a good contact ready to send one as soon as it comes to the surface.

>>Have to decide whether to use CMS 601's or similar in-wall version with Super tweeter.<< The CMS 601s will fit, but do you want them pointing straight down? That seems a more fundamental decision than the supertweeter, which make no significant difference to the end result.

if unrestricted reference performance is your goal, would it be better to set things up like a mini version of the commercial cinema like JBL did or better to use the Dolby approach? In other words, what is the harm in using the commercial approach?
It's not the Harman approach vs. the Dolby approach. What Harman did was the Dolby cinema approach. No harm in doing that at all.

Quote:
Is it only the lower residential ceiling height that is driving the recommendation to shift the ceiling speakers to the outer perimeter???
I have not seen a Dolby document discuss placing ceiling speakers at the outer perimeter. They have been fairly vague on the width of ceiling speakers for consumer systems. Maybe I missed it -- really. There's a lot of Dolby material floating around. If you spot something specific, please advise.

Quote:
Would ceiling heights greater than 14', which seems to be the upper limit mentioned in the Atmos guidelines, trigger a recommendation to height speakers placed at the thirds of the room over the seating???
No. The 14' limit relates to the ability of the bounce effect to work as intended. I presume any higher and a) the beam spreads too wide -- imaging reduced, b) the SPL is limited, c) the HF is too attenuated. There is no limit for ceiling speakers.

Quote:
Procella was another that had the speakers over the listening area, although I'd say the speakers were between the thirds of the room and the aisle ways....so an in-between approach. Wisdom Audio's room also had the ceiling speakers over the seating vs. the aisle ways but was clearly illustrating a luxury home environment.
Yes, Atmos is a flexible and tolerant system. Dolby has stated that you'd have to work pretty hard to make it not work.

Thanks Roger,

As suggested.......I will build my own backer boxes with volume between 0.5 to 0.7 cubic feet so 13 X 13 X 6 inch box is doable. Plan to angle baffle toward midpoint between two rows. Looks like Tannoy CMS 601DC is what I plan to deploy.

According to Nyal Mellor's SPL calculator and the CMS 601 specifications, you'll get reference level (85db with 20db headroom) at around 11 feet from the speaker with the rated power handling. I'm not sure your MLP is as close to this to the speakers. Might be, but not sure..

If you are further away and care about reference level, you may need to look at the CMS 801DC, that will be good for reference at around 14 ft. from the speaker.

cheers,
raczkri

Thanks,

Front row seating ear level distance is little under 9 ft with respect to front Atmos ceiling speakers with rears being 8 ft. I've listened to reference a couple times and don't care for those levels.

My comfortable listening levels are -10 db's on Marantz 8801........so with that info, Tannoy 601DC's should work. With a little angle to baffle along with 90+ degree dispersion, should be fine. Any issues with timbre matching should be eq'ed to conform with rest of Triad speakers. Wish Triad would come up with a solution for my application.

EQ, processor are now items that need to be decided upon.

Thanks for post and was very helpful in clearing the air and food for thought.

All good then.. I'm very much looking forward to your Atmos listening impressions that would be soon now.

Just got done watching "Edge of Tomorrow" with wife.......

I think new reference for ULF is now credited to opening sequence before movie starts. At -10 db on Marantz, first time my projector was bouncing like crazy while getting that unusual feeling gut feeling of pressure. Whole room was shaking like crazy! Wave has to be extremely low frequency. WOTW can't hold a candle to what I just experienced..........that 4-5 second burst was unnerving!!!

That 4-5 second intro has to be measured..........

Not much happening on Atmos front...........

Waiting to learn more from Roger's pioneering adventures..........

Been busy with football and various other activities..........busy time of year for me. Have been thinking about what to do with Atmos ceiling speakers. Would like to aim drivers toward MLP which is problematic with Tannoy CMS 601 DC's.

Thinking about possibilities using Tannoy Di 5 DC's which will fit in ceiling cloud hidden by fabric. Problem with that idea is not SPL levels, rather frequency response which is -3 db's at 90 Hz.

If I go Tannoy Di 6 DC's, then size is too large to fit in cloud behind fabric so I would have to place outside of cloud. Doing so would provide better angles to MLP, but would be seen. Main reason for building cloud was to hide speakers. Frequency response for Di 6 DC's is -3 db's at 70 Hz which is a better fit than Di 5 DC's.

Decisions........decisions...........

Will know more when Roger receives his Marantz 7702 and gets his room dialed in...........

If someone has suggestions I'm all ears..............still want to hide speakers in cloud which is becoming problematic. Hoping in the next month or so to get everything ironed out.........which might involve waiting for second generation products to evolve.

So.........

Decided to join the Marantz 7702 crowd and replace my Marantz 8801..............

Easy switch out as face plate for 7702 is exact dimensions for 8801. If anyone is interested in the Marantz 8801 feel fee to pm me. Still has 1-1/2 years left on warranty and has been stellar in my room.......BTW, purchased via AVS.

Hopefully, I'll soon get a chance to hear what magic Roger has done to his room concerning Atmos.

Marantz 8801

Finally found my dream home.............hopefully, "Coffin Build II" is just around the corner. Scraping around car seats finding the last few lost nickels.

For a cool 59 million USD.......one would think a theater would be part of the home.......especially with a name like Tom Cruise associated with property! BTW, doesn't Tommy boy use Proaudio Technology Speakers?

http://www.zillow.com/blog/tom-cruis...estate-163559/

The guy is definitely a little strange.......and would assume he has already build a bunker underneath home just perfect for a dedicated theater!

So.........Happy Thanksgiving to all!

BTW, what's up with women and Subaru? My wife could have bought anything.......but she wanted a Subaru for safety. Did my best to convince her a Beamer X3 would be best............but I was ignored!

Bildo has a talent with this stuff. IMO the best was the "wood magazine" one that I walked into face first :

How much $$ did you spend on tools to build your theater ???

I should learn.

Well........

On Santa's list I have four new Tannoy Di 6 DC's........hopefully, wife and kids get it right. Will be back in room once again getting speakers in ceiling cloud..........busy Christmas break. pictures to come.

ON another note, have my Holiday Bowl tickets in ordered along with flight tickets back to my birthplace.......San Diego! Haven't been to San Diego since 1998 World Series between Yanks and Padres. USC vs. Nebraska should be a good one............Mike Riley will surely right the ship in no time at Nebraska an am glad he will not be coaching bowl game. Good luck to Mike as he is a casual aquaintance........and have always enjoyed our football discussions.

Btw, not happy about committee selection..............fine with Alabama, Oregon though I dispise the Zeros, and Florida State...............but what's up with Ohio State?

TCU without a doubt was 4th best team to fill in last slot...........don't care if Baylor inked out a lucky comeback win at home. TCU is a better football team than Baylor..............we know all well how the Zeros avenged an earilier loss to Arizona. Head to head or not.......both Baylor and TCU ended with same conference record............it's just TCU is a better ball club.

Ok.......off my "Speaker's Corners" soap box.......

Congrats! Enjoy them when you finish.

I agree with you on the committee selection. I thought that they would have gotten it right because of the week before they did. Then they go and screw it up. It doesn't really matter IMO because Alabama and Oregon are so much better than everybody else. It will be both of them in the national championship game. I hope Oregon smashes them and wins the entire thing!

I'm conflicted...........

UCLA.......Notre Dame......Oregon.........Alabama in respective order are top of my list wanting to be buried in losses! I'm rooting for Florida State and Ohio State though a pipe dream for those two teams to advance........I believe you might be correct with your predictions. One would think being an Oregonian I'd be pulling for Oregon but I'd rather have a thousand fleas infest my armpits before I pull for the Zeros. IMHO, bRUIN and Duck fans are the worst..................
