Let me start with what I've done before. My first time with a front projector was when Sharp came out with their first LCD projector back around the mid 90's I believe. I had a 55" 4:3 rear projection tv & I added an electric drop down screen in front of it & it looked fantastic to me with our laserdisc collection. When we sold the home in 2003 we sold it will the home.

We built a new home in 2003 & converted the space for a formal dining room into a HT instead. We've never had a formal dining room so why waste the space? We have loved having the TR for the past 10 years but it's small & only seats 3 people. We have a 106" screen though in a 10'x13' room makes it feel bigger than it is.

Our daughters are to the point that they don't use their playroom like they did when they were smaller so we decided to convert it to a larger TR so we can enjoy our love of movies with more friends & family. I can't afford to strip the room down to the studs & spend major money on all the sound proofing & fancy lighting so we have agreed to keep it simple but enjoy the experience. We don't need to make it sound proof as we will be using it when we are all awake anyway.

Equipment list can be seen in my sig. I have everything now since my screen just arrived but my projector. Carpet guy is coming tomorrow as I would like to replace the carpet in the room with some dark carpet. I will be sealing off the windows so no light gets through either.

The room was painted all an off-white so that was the first step. Here is what I began with......

I painted the screen wall with flat black paint & started the walls & ceiling with a nice dark brown that my girls all liked.

A view of the back of the room before the new paint. My DVD/Blu-ray case was being moved to a side wall to create space for our riser & rear row of seats.

Some of my movies when I was moving the movie case.

Here is the case after I moved it. I took the entire thing apart & rebuilt it so get 2 more rows in the same space & then gave it a fresh coat of black paint.

And after I put the movies back in it.....

No fancy lighting for me but we did want a ceiling fan to help cool the room. I wired in a remote control though so that I can control it from my seat! tongue.gif

The riser is alive!

I put some stairs on both sides.

Installed some simple LED lights to help see the stairs.

Insulated the riser for whatever it's worth. biggrin.gif

Looking nice Jim. So they installed the new pad and carpet over the existing? I've never seen that done before but, then again I don't know much about carpet really, except I like the feel of it under my feet. wink.gif

No, they removed the old pad & carpet before installing the new pad & carpet. wink.gif

I am having a heck of a time finding a nice simple audio rack for my A/V receiver, Blu-ray & few other pieces. Any ideas from anyone where to find one? I checked at BB but they had very few choices, mostly TV stands.

I was able to get my screen hung today. It's a 148" Da-lite Cinema Contour Pearlescent 2.35:1 screen.

I got a nice looking A/V rack, from all places, at Target. It looks nice and very functional. You can check it out from my sig.

Are those 2x10's you used for the riser?

Based on the insulation he used, I'd say yes.

I didn't see one at Target either so I built one today. I was able to prime it & I will paint it tomorrow.

My daughter cheering me on. smile.gif

The room is 16' wide x 18' deep. I wish I had a little more depth but I had to use what I had. biggrin.gif The riser is 10" tall, 12.5' wide x 5.5' deep.

How tall are your ceilings in the room? Did you lose any headroom?

I have 9' ceilings so headroom is okay.

I was able to get all of my surround speakers & front height channel speakers hung today. I have run most of my speaker wire too. My door was finally shipped out yesterday to my local Home Depot so it should be here this week. biggrin.gif

I painted my audio rack that I built and received my JVC RS 4810 too! biggrin.gif

Still wet here but you get the idea.

I like what you've done so far!

That screen is HUGE!
mijotter's Avatar mijotter 11:23 PM 04-14-2013
How far away from the screen is the first row couch? Do you find it too close? just right?

Thanks. Funny that it doesn't seem as big as I thought it would feel! wink.gif

My wife & I will never sit there but it's 12' away. The kids love it. I don't have a picture to see yet but just sitting there feels okay. I'll know soon enough. In my smaller TR I have a 106" 16x9 screen & I sit 10' away. It feels just fine & since my new set-up will be 120" on a 1.85:1 movie it will be okay I think. biggrin.gif
mijotter's Avatar mijotter 11:49 PM 04-14-2013
Wow that's awesome. My screen will be a 90" 16:9 then take away the masking and a 112" scope screen. Where my wife and I will be sitting is a little over 10 feet away. Sound like that should be a good distance.

You may wish that you got a bigger screen down the road! wink.gif

haha well unfortunately that is literally the biggest it can get because of the room size trust me I did measurements for hours.

I made a mount for the ceiling mount to attach to. Things in the ceiling were not in the places I needed them to be so I bridged them & mounted my ceiling mount to it.

Finally the projector is mounted! biggrin.gif

Thanks! They are Energy CR-10 bi-pole surrounds, I have 4 of them for back & side surrounds. biggrin.gif I absolutely love Energy speakers & have for many years. I have Energy speakers in 3 other surround systems in my house too! wink.gif

Well I finally have a picture up! I don't have it dialed in at all but when we watched a movie the other night I was amazed at how great it looked. biggrin.gif Talk about 148" of glorious picture quality. I love this JVC RS4810 & can't wait to have it properly calibrated! I'm still trying to figure out which dual subwoofer set-up I want to get.

I like those theater seats a lot and my wife would too. What kind are they, and where did you get them from? They are microfiber correct?
