well for the time being 2 of them will go in storage until time and money allow for a 7 channel receiver. For now, I'll just 2 as the rears.

I'd like to reiterate that you've convinced me to spend $1500 on speakers when I had no intention of spending anywhere near that much when this project started. Well done.

edit : I went and spent $200 on the Sub on my own, even against your wishes so revise that to $1300...still...

edit 2 : will I be able to run those traids in serial or parallel for a 9 speaker surround configuration?

I don't understand Atmos wiring - shouldn't there be 11 sets of terminals?

This receiver is only capable of 5.1.2 maximum in an Atmos configuration. There are 7 pairs for the speakers and one sub section.

If you are looking for an 11 channel setup aka 7.1.4, you need to buy a receiver further up the chain. Most will max out at 9 channels of amplification and require and additional 2 channel amp to drive them.

I know it gets about as clear as mud but that seems to be the standard for now.

Cheers.

That may be so, but that $1500 is about what you would have to spend on just your Left and Right new. So, at least they were pretty good deals.

I would try just running 7.1 at first. You might never need to add a second row of side surrounds. If you did, you would want to run them together for a combined 8 ohm load so you don't stress your receiver otherwise run the extra set into another amplifier like this one.

The Silver LCRs would be $850 - $1000 each. The Gold Sats are hard to compare to anything current. Retail on those was probably in the neighborhood of $600 - $700, but that's a guess. So, $5000 worth of speakers for $1300 isn't too bad. Plus, unless they get damaged, they will likely be the only speakers you'll ever need*.

*Unless you keep reading AVS, then the upgrade bug will eventually hit and you'll tear the whole room apart and start over with everything.

I feel like for my own mental health, I should take a break from this forum once I get to a "completion point" if that ever happens

I neglected to mention that the seller of the speakers complimented me on my good taste in speakers - I said well actually I don't but I have friends who DO have good taste in speakers and they recommended these...

he seemed a bit bewildered that someone would buy speakers for that much money on a recommendation alone. He doesn't know you guys like I do

once again, I don't understand signal flow on this. How do you output from the receiver into something that this thing understands?

on the back of the receiver there are a bunch of outputs, labeled by channel, Then take an RCA cable and plug it into one of the inputs on the upper corners labeled unbalanced. That is the simplest.

Big is right, but it may not be clear that many receivers don't have the outputs that would be required.

You would need the receiver to have "pre-outs":: output ports of the signal "pre amplification." Remember that within a receiver the signal is 1) received 2)decoded 3)processed 4)equilized 5)amplified. If the receiver has pre-outs, that just means that you can tap into the signal before the last step, for the purposes of offloading the amplification to somewhere else or for inserting further processing (since you can't process the signal post-amplification - only "pre")

so this doesn't have the required pre-outs right?

No it doesn't. You would need a higher end receiver.

The other solution, though certainly not the first choice, would be to try to use a RCA Line Level converter.

http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-2-Chan.../dp/B00009UHRE

They are used frequently in car audio when trying to hook up an amp to a stock head unit. I don't know what this would do to the combined impedance of the speaker pairs. I also don't know what it would do to the sound. Fidelity isn't as much of a concern for most of the people using these. But it might be a cheaper way to add an amplifier than finding a new receiver with pre-outs.

It's a second subwoofer preamp output if you want to run stereo subs.

the sale price is long gone on this so it's fine. I'm not in a huge hurry to buy another receiver - especially having just dropped $650 on speakers (Thank you, @BllDo ...)

Drywall is done.

OMG what a mess these guys left behind.

Electric and doors on Monday and then I think construction is done.

Oh and you should have seen the face on the guy when I asked him to patch the hole where they pulled the wire through by mistake. You would have thought that I just told him I killed his dog.

Looking good. Curious, and this may have been brought up previously; is there a specific reason you elected not to finish behind the screen?

My guess would be already planned acoustic panels.

No I don't think so.

A finished wall would reflect a whole ton of sound. Also cost effective. We covered this like 300 posts ago

edit : it was almost 400 posts ago
