I would love to have set this up in the "Poll" section of the board, but I couldn't find a way to start a new thread in that section, so I'm going to start this here and see what happens.

Here's the plan:

There are now several wonderful HD demo discs available on AVS. I would like to put together one BD9 (a DVD-DL that is playable by most BDPs) that has the best of the best, running about 30 minutes. Superleo has (been) volunteered to do the mastering with Scenarist, so I just need to put the files together. Hence, this poll.

Since there are literally hundreds of clips, I want to start by getting your (that's right - YOU!) favorite three (3). Please be specific. For example, "Iron Man" doesn't tell me anything. "Iron Man, Jericho missile scene" tells me what I need to know.

After an arbitrary amount of time, I will total the results here, and set up another poll with the most popular from here to narrow it down to the select few that will be included in the final product.

Select anything from ScubaSteve's two discs, superleo's two discs, or Jindrak's disc (sorry, Chris, but I decided not to wait for your second).

Invoking Executive Privilege, the Jericho missile scene from Iron Man, Dolby TrueHD spheres and THX Amazing Life are going to be on the final disc, so don't bother voting for them.

So what scenes do you reach for again and again?

Michael

Don't have my 3 ready yet (I can't think that fast), but off the top of my head wasn't there a screamin' spaceship crash scene in the first of the Pitch Black movies? With Vin Diesel... I remember, the crash I have in mind - maybe not from Pitch Black but from something else - went on and on for minutes, was very harrowing and had me hanging onto my chair for dear life, and when they panned back you could see that the trail of the crash was there for what looked like miles...

In the second one in that Pitch Black series there was a scene where Vin was hanging onto a rope swinging around a cliff and just made it to shadow before being incinerated...

Some of the Fast and Furious scenes were great too, spellbinding. And Daniel Craig's sports car crash scene when he was avoiding hitting the girl lying in the middle of the country road in Casino Royale was pretty intense...

Oops, is that 4+ now?

That'll be great for the NEXT disc, Bob. For this one, we're trying to get the best scenes from the demo discs that have already been made available here so we can have 30 minutes of the best of the best.

I know you've got some of them, so pick your three favorite scenes from THEM.

I'm voting for:

Thor: Ice giant battle - The dynamics and visual both are amazing on this one, especially the bolt as Odin comes in at the end.
How to train you dragon: Boss dragon battle - My favorite movie of all time, can't wait to be able to hit single digits so I can truly experience this part
Dark Knight: Tunnel chase - The dark and the explosions are amazing

Sorry not to follow as instructed, but I think that this could be a multiple question with the same intent.

Therefore, to answer the question above:

- Master and Commander first battle
- super 8, train wreck (production value)
- Flight of the Phoenix, crash landing

I'll be also posting what I think would be the best of the best clips --- still thinking on these.

I used the first ship battle scene from Master & Commander for demo'ing the original (35 year old?) Advent Loudspeakers I had in mind for properly equipping the 280 seat theater at Veteran's memorial center in Redwood City CA, after I had equipped them with HD for the first time. (24' screen). 720p for now, they can't afford to replace this 10 year old Sanyo projector, so they have to wait on 1080p for now... This was with a 7.1 Denon and a dual 12" M&K sub (one of whose 12's had to be re-edged afterwards, we blew a 3" hole in its foam half roll edge...!)

The clatter of all the debris flying past you and hitting the rear wall was spectacular! Perfect demo for 7.1, it just wouldn't have been the same with only 5.1...

The director of the facility later said he felt like he had come away from the demo with a concussion, his sinuses were draining for the rest of the afternoon...! This was with a happy smile on his face of course. He's also a bass player in a band, so he's no stranger to high decibel volumes.

He cleared all my suggestions, the 3 front Advent speakers are all hung and the sub has been re-edged, it cranks away merrily every Friday at 1:15pm. They were complaining that it had become too dim a pic lately so I replaced the 2 year old lamp and that cured that, doubled its light level. If you're in RC on a Friday afternoon stop in and check it out. It's free. They play fresh, new release movies, as long as they are out to disc, and always prioritize the bluray version (at my behest - they had been playing all SD before). Played Identity Thief last week, Safe Haven the week before that, Skyfall a couple months ago...

Considering 30 minute is pretty short, maybe you could consider *excerpts* instead of whole scenes; say, 15 seconds or so. Of course this removes a bit of what makes a full demo interesting, but you'd be able to get a much more complete material selection this way.

The three I'm starting with take up about 2 minutes. Obviously, if ten people wanted the scene from Pearl Harbor, I would need to edit it. The whole idea behind this (which is, apparently, of less general interest than I thought it would be) is to have something "short and sweet," as opposed to the two-hour BDs that are available; something you would just play through, rather than go from scene to menu to scene.

I'm hoping to leave most of the scenes as they are on the existing discs.

Michael

Picking just 3 clips is extremely tough since most of these clips are excellent choices for demo material.
Giving just the choice of picking 3... If I could only show 3 clips to someone... mmmmmm....

1.- Art of Flight, Alaska. This clip is awesome in both audio and video and will sound great in every setup.
2.- Black Hawk Down, F Irene. A more challenging clip with great audio.
3.- Master & Commander, first battle. Audio wise is awesome.. In my opinion, video is fine... considering the clip overall... awesome.

Choosing just three is hard, that's why we have different categories, overall I think these clips show a good balance.

After seeing the demo of The Art of Flight I purchased it. I'm glad I did, the Dolby TrueHD demo at the beginning of the disc just adds to the whole demo experience.

The first ships battle in Master and Commander is also great for shadow detail. Like the first scene in Amistad, there is lots of detail in some very dark places.

1. Tron Legacy Grid Sequence (perfect demo for visuals, bass and surround sound)
2. Terminator Salvation Gas Station scene (again great for visual, bass, surround sound and dynamics) * I would actually recommend extending this scene all the way out until after the plan fight. The discs now cut it short in the motorcycle scene but this scene plays perfect until after the planes.
3. Master and Commander Opening Battle (outstanding surround activity, bass).

Remember the media constraints though. There are some clips that could had been edited a little longer, perhaps for the BD50s, but for the BD9s we have to go straight to the meat and potatoes.

BD9s playing time will be between 32 to 35 minutes max.

Many thanks to the brave and select few for your suggestions. There is no need for another poll to get to a "Best of," so here's how it worked out.

HTTYD is almost 10 minutes long, and the "good" parts are at the beginning and end of that, so I couldn't see a good way of including it. Similarly, the Tron and Legacy suggestions, as much as I like them, are also long and not really amenable to cutting in half.

So, for now, the "Best of the Demo Discs Demo Disc" looks like this:

Art of Flight . . . . . . . . . . . 2:31 . . FS . . AC-3

Black Hawk Down . . . . . . . 1:05 . . WS . . PCM

Dolby Spheres . . . . . . . . .  0:25 . . FS . . TrueHD

Finding Nemo . . . . . . . . . . 2:37 . . FS  . . AC-3

Flight of the Phoenix . . . . . 2:39 . . WS . . DTS-MA

Iron Man . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0:37 . . WS . . TrueHD

Looper . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2:45 . . WS . . DTS-MA

LOTR: Return of the King . . 2:36 . . WS . . DTS-MA

Master and Commander . . . . 3:54 . . WS . . DTS-MA

Snow White . . . . . . . . . . . . 3:36 . . WS . . DTS-MA

Super 8 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3:44 . . WS . . TrueHD

Thor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4:34 . . WS . . DTS-MA

THX Amazing Life . . . . . . . . 0:44 . . FS . . DTS-MA

War of the Worlds . . . . . . . . . 3:29 . . FS . . DTS-MA

And now it's off to my production department (;)).
Progress will be reported here for those interested.
Many thanks again to those who participated.
Michael

I'm sure we will end up burning several. And, as with the previous discs, when we're reasonably sure it's okay, it will be released as a BD9, so that you can download your very own copy and burn it to a DVD-DL.

Very much looking forward to this one! These are definitely a majority of the ones that I show people first before moving on to the not as good scenes, so I'm looking forward to it. Only ones I would add are the LotR Balrog scene and the IMAX intro, but beggars can't be choosers!

I would like to have added the Underworld: Awakening scene, but no one (despite my not-so-subtle hint) mentioned it, so I limited myself, also, to three.

I'm hoping we can cram what we have onto one disc without further "trimming." We'll see.
