We just had out garage framed out as it is going to be a den/home theatre. As you can see I put insulation panels(low R value) on the garage door a long time ago. Looking for some advice. What can we use for the best soundproofing and insulation as we live on a busy road not too far from the garage. We are obviously going to put insulation between the studs but we need to soundproof as well. Thanks a lot!!

Insulation is just the beginning of your soundproofing journey, do it with the cheapest fiberglass you can find.

Next you add isolation clips and hat channel to the walls and ceiling, Then hang a double layer of 5/8 drywall (heavy not the light) with Green Glue dampening agent between layers. Read about this at Soundproofingcompany.com

You also need to address every hole you cut in the drywall bunker for lights etc, and have a beefy door.

You need to be aware that if this garage shares an already finished wall (both sides) with the house then building a wall in front of that will create a triple leaf which can work against you. There is an article on that at that site I mentioned.

I know this is a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway....

What if you have a room that is already finished. Would putting Soundproofing clips and furring channel on the existing drywall and then adding another layer of Drywall do anything "positive"?

No.............triple leaf effect.
