Darren,

Nice choice for the finish. 1) Will you have grills? Or 2) Keep it simple, and have the baffle & drivers exposed with the same finish as the cabinet. (FWIW I like #2 )

The drivers will be exposed. I have a pet-free and child-free home so I don't need to protect the drivers from anything. My young nieces and nephew have been taught that if they touch anything in the room besides the floor and chairs that Frozen (or whatever movie they choose) is turned off so quickly the projector is cooling down before they can even think about fake crying to get their movie back on the big screen. So I have no worries about exposing the drivers without a grill.

I haven't been a big fan of grills since I started building speakers. These drivers look so nice it would be a shame to hide them behind a grill.

Two of my favorite things, HT room design and speaker design, and both in one thread!

Everything looks excellent deewan! I'll admit I was skeptical about the faux-rock wall, but it looks like it was a spot-on choice with everything in your room.

Those speakers, I take it you've designed them yourself, care to share any details on design procedures/crossover information? They're looking great so far!

"Measure twice, then measure again. Only then should you even THINK about cutting."

Once the build is complete and I have proof of concept, I'll be happy to share the details of the build.

Here are the new bases. May not seem like a big change, but I like these A LOT more than my first version. I'll be sanding and shaping them tonight and getting them ready for paint as well. Temps are rising around Iowa so I might be able to prime the cabinets in the next week or before it gets humid and before my travel for work ramps up again.

Quick update with my DIY speakers. I've started building the top of the feet for the outriggers and I have two coats of primer on them and I finished wet sanding today with 400 and 600 grit paper. They are slippery smooth now in most places.

I also primed and painted the bases a gloss black. I did one last dry fit of the bases and binding posts with the tower cabinets. Everything still fits. I hope to have the final paint on within the next 2 weeks. Hopefully my schedule allows for it.

While I wait for a chance to do final paint on the cabinets, I figured I'd hook everything up and see if I could produce some music. My test was a SUCCESS!!!!! First impressions are they are going to sound wonderful once they are fully put together and have the cabinets finished.

I also made another minor upgrade to my theater. I added a Middle Atlantic light in my equipment closet. Helps for those times I need to read the labels on the equipment. Exciting stuff... I know.

That's a great idea, I will have to look at where I can add one to you rack
Not sure I have seen pictures of where your rack is, how are you handling cable management in the back?

My rack is on the side of my room and I have complete access to the back of the equipment through a door in an adjoining room. Forgive the bottom photo, it was before I cleaned up the cables and wiring and even before I complete the equipment closet build.

My horizontal cable management is mostly Monoprice cable management attached to my rack. My vertical is tucked away inside the uprights of the rack itself.

Thanks deewan, I think I am going to love having rear access to my rack
But not having a "proper" rack like you I am trying to think of cable management
I did score 6 feet of 2"x1 1/2" Panduit for free. So that will help

@Waterboy77 Watch estate sales, ebay, if you have some form of Craigslist up in Canada. I was able to score my 7 foot tall equipment rack for $100 off Craigslist. On ebay I was always finding server racks from Naperville (near Chicago and a 3 hours drive away) for $100-$150 that had doors and sides. Naperville is a tech area so large companies were always selling their used gear or surplus. Just something to keep in mind even though I saw your rack build and it's very well planned out.

I hear ya. I spent about $600 on shelving and accessories. But I've found the advantages to having a real rack opposed to the two previous DIY racks to be a big bonus. Just throwing out ideas.

Weather finally allowed for the last coat of primer to be applied to the cabinets. I will be wet sanding this Friday and I think my final paint guy can get my cabinets painted on Sunday..... ohhhh the excitement!

In the meantime, I have completed my center channel stand. Glossy black paint, charcoal velvet fabric lined top to protect the CC cabinet, and metal pucks on the outriggers type feet. The metal pucks are currently just sitting on the stand. I'm not completely sold on the look they bring. I do love the pucks on the tower bases, so maybe once the stand is surrounded by two towers, the entire look will come together.

Dewan,

Those speakers are looking GREAT!
Sounds like you are sticking around for the 4th - to be able to show us more photos next week. As for me; we are headed to the Gladbrook/rein beck/Lincoln area - any messages for your tailgating friends?

Nice work Darren. It might be fun to watch paint dry after all...

Clearly, I'm a man of action - just give me a few minutes to think about it.
