Just went over Big’s mechanical-move checklist with the owner of the HVAC company, and he’s on board and understands what must be done.  I’ll be down there knocking down that fourth wall when they remove the fixtures and move to the mechanicals move, so I’ll be sure to keep an eye on what’s going on. Tomorrow’s the big day!  I can’t wait. After this, it’s full steam ahead.

I also have an electrician coming tomorrow to let me know what will be required for me to run another 100 or 200 amps to the house.  The cable coming to the house might be large enough to handle another 100 or 200 amps, so adding the service should be a few hundred bucks, BUT, if it’s not that simple and new cable needs to be run through the yard, then that’s $4k-$5k that I refuse to spend, and I will promptly sell my Emotiva XPR-1 Monoblocks…

Also, I closed the listing for the 600ES.  I got a bunch of lowball offers and unresponsive prospective buyers, so I took this as a sign to just hold on to the projector.  If the 600ES gets outdated at CEDIA, then I’ll get the latest and greatest (I can't help myself anyway) and use the 600ES for 3D, gaming, and all other non-movie sources.  It’s a heck of a projector.

I cannot stand this archaic vBulletin platform. I have pictures of the complete mechanical/water heater/bathroom move, but I haven't the patience to figure out how to post them from my phone (if that's even possible anymore).

I was absolutely disappointed when I got on here this morning to check on my subscribed threads and I saw this format again. I really loved the other setup. The mobile site was great and the desktop site was well put together in my opinion. This is just terrible.

Complain all we want. They can't go back. The other format was far superior but the previous owners wanted to cash out, sold out to someone who was willing to pay the price and we, the "customer" always get the short end of the stick.

I have seen the exact same thing when my bank was "purchased", and when, for example, Audiogon was purchased (talk about a screw up the customer job!!!!!!)

I'm disappointed too. At first I hated the previous set up but once I learned my way around it my opinion changed. The AVS mobile was great fit and format for my iphone; probably the main reason I posted so much. I was always connected.
I have a feeling this new format will diminish AVS traffic

So I am guessing the bad code of the new forum has scared the beast ?

Nah, just been busy with the workers wrapping up the basement today (and me hauling up twenty heavy contractor bags up a flight of stairs, through the garage, and to the front of my house for the am pickup). The final result is amazing....the space looks...inspirational.

I always just embedded URLs anyway, they show up even bigger than they used to in the thread as far as I can see. Attachments are nice for expanding an image size to an even higher resolution, such as design drawings and such.

That being said, I hate this new format. The old format was simple and used space efficiently. The "Prettier" the forum layout usually, the worse the message boards are to actually read/use most of the time. Except for Reddit, which is the worst looking thing ever.

Signatures are also horrid now.

They can't go back because the other system was proprietary to the old owner.

What appears to have happened was a rush to completion of the sale with little to no thought on the impact to the user. CLASSIC corporate move. The site is no longer run by audio/video enthusiasts but a bunch of profit driven business people.

Had they taken their time, done some serious planning, done some beta testing and some serious evaluation, they could have 95% of all of the complaints ironed out before they made the transition.

Corporate America at its finest !!!

What a joke!!

I have long used the and copy pasted between them URL for pictures. I am a picture whore too. But this new process is very noticeable how much it sucks compared to the previous.

Pictures make threads better IMO. It should be simple to post a picture, especially from a tablet or smart phone. Just click the "picture" icon, select the picture you want to post and click submit. Done. It should format and size automatically. Nothing else should be needed.

The difference is that the old AVS actually snagged the picture so it would last. If you use a secondary site and embed it, when that site goes down or the pictures get removed you get like the SMX thread has- where the pictures are gone. Same if you use your own facebook, but then delete or set the share permission to non public. I've used facebook to try to post some pictures, but it's not ideal. I miss the old way. I think AVS should store the pictures as part of the thread data so it stands the test of time. Especially for forums like this where builds can take years and threads last many years with good relevancy.

@ Beast - nice embed job I like seeing your pics. Even if the process is less ideal don't stop posting them!

Rich, thanks for posting these. I just signed up for Photobucket. I used to use Flicker back when we used this platform before, but Flicker photos just weren't embedding properly. I'll post the whole move timeline below. Thanks again!!!

So Jerry's Plumbing & Heating was on this job. Jerry and his army showed up bright and early Wednesday morning:

They started with this:

They got to work quickly:

They got the HVAC out of the way so they could work on the electrical and re-running of the water-heater pipes, and add external combustion air to eliminate the need for a louvered door:

Then they turned the support blocks for the soffit sideways to make room for an 8" return to the lobby area right next to a supply trunk, which means I can now finish the storage room (equipment room or lounge? Maybe I'll start a poll and let AVS decide):

I got to work on demoing the last wall of the bathroom while they worked, so they could ask questions. Big was right--being present during the work was CRITICAL. Otherwise, I would have had all kinds of things hanging below joists.

The final product (the studs on the right are still there because it looks like they support the soffit. I'll get rid of them once I have Dr. BigMouthInDC takes a look at them up close and provide a diagnosis):

With 30" in front of the innermost point of the mechanical cluster, the following items are true:

FINAL USABLE DIMENSIONS BEFORE FRAMING: 17.5' x 30'

WELL WORTH THE EFFORT AND THE COST!!

while those studs may support the very end of the soffit each of those vertical pieces also supports the soffit so go ahead and remove that wall framing. we can secure the end somehow later. Hold off however on that bump out bit with the drain pipe.

The bathroom is going to be in the 11x27 storage room (which won't be a storage room for much longer, now that we have a return behind the theater space. I'm going to finish it, but first--the bathroom goes in there since it sits right on top of a sewer line.

I know you kept saying you would do it... but seeing it done, and the space knocked out... is a sight to see! This will be a much better use of space!

I think your biggest obstacle you have is the focus on your camera

Yeah man, I wanted to go from "hmmmm, clever use of available space' to "yesssssss."

Ah, the camera....is my half-dead Samsung Galaxy S3 with cracked screen (dropped it face-down into concrete right after basement demo). The camera has focus issues in low light

Edit: I just found my 45 gajillipixel Sony Cybershot camera...I'll be putting that to use from now on!

Considering the level of equipment you want to employ on your theater, which is significant, the theater space itself should most definitely be a "Yessssss." space.

So now that you have pulled the trigger on the big theater space, are you now going to re-open the argument of wiring for Atmos? (Even if you don't use it now)

Glad to hear a good camera is coming into play. I've been using nothing but my iphone for pics during my bar construction, and it is hit and miss. The color variance seems to change constantly. Can't beat a real camera with real optics!
