Hi there guys and gals
I'm planning for a HT in my basement/ground floor and are trying to figure out the best way for acoustical treatment and sound proofing. The room that will work as the HT is 6 x 3,2 meters and have a height of 2,3 m, so it's a decent space although it's a bit narrow. The room is placed under ground and all the four walls in the room are made out of concrete and two of them are external walls. From what I've heard, and read, concrete walls are fairly good when it comes to sound isolation but quite the opposite when it comes to the acoustics in the room. I guess there are different opinions regarding this and I like to hear what you 're thinking.
My plan, as it looks like for the moment, is to not use plaster walls but instead use acoustical treatments directly (more or less anyway) against the concrete walls. I will then put up some steel studs and hang frames with acoustic transparent fabrics on them. The reason why I planning to go this way is because it will save me some space and also because of the fact that there is insulation placed on the outside of the external walls (which is becoming a standard for basements here in Sweden). In these cases the recommendations are that you don't use insulation on the inside as well (because of the "moist barrier").
I guess that the ideal (at least for sound proofing) would be to use staggered stud walls, insulation, double layer of plaster boards, green glue in between the layers of plaster board and then use acoustical treatments on top of all that. But as mentioned above, this would make the room to narrow IMO. And besides, the room is not located underneath or directly in contact with any bedroom. So in other words, I'm not to concerned about the sound proofing but will rather focus on the acoustical treatment of the room.
I hope what I'm writing make sense and that you all can understand what I'm trying to say.
