Hi Everyone

First a bit of background. My family and I are moving from England to Colorado very soon. We have purchased an amazing home and are remodelling. Part of the remodel is rearranging the main floor plan, and as such, I have a dedicated theatre space of 17' x 18'6 plus and additional area for a small home office. I have been a member of AV Forums for over 8 years and did a full length build thread for my first cinema room. My involvement was limited and had a builder friend do the construction with me basically pointing what goes where. It turned out pretty well for a small space and have been happy with it up until now.
The new home has reignited my passion to build something bigger and better, but it's time I have more time on my hands to get really involved. I've recently joined AVS and have spent the last two weeks reading the countless amazing builds, ideas and various elements available on here. The knowledge of both AVF and AVS members is invaluable and no doubt I will drive you all mad with endless questions in my new project.....

This is the first cinema that I had built, it's fairly small at 9' x 15'. Equipment was: InFocus IN82, Denon AVR1910, 92" Grandview screen, Sony Blu Ray player, PS3 then PS4 and the Kef 3005SE kit....to be honest, it sounds amazing. But no when I finish the new one, there will hopefully be a noticeable upgrade.

Hi Yuki,

I've also moved to the US, of sorts (still got to update my profile). Hope your new build goes as smoothly as possible. The larger home theatre area seems great.
All the best,
Ramon

Here is a sketch of one of the ideas I have please excuse my drawing skills or lack of. Really like the look and idea that is in Landsharks build thread. But I also like lots of other ideas...

I like that idea of staggered wall treatments in more of artistical pattern. What colors are you thinking?

Hi

The staggered idea isn't mine, it was from Landsharks build, just modded a little to incorporate different shapes and sizes.
Here are some of the colours I am thinking of combining; dark metallic blue, dark grey, light grey and orange accents...obviously ,these can change

I got the colour scheme inspiration from an image on the Houzz app

Another thing I am struggling with is to go with the traditional theatre look, or a more homely style like this

The build space is the former garage space, so the floor is concrete and there is no room above or below, the plan is shown here in more detail, it's labeled as the rec room.

In this image it would be the single story space to the right, the basement level isn't shown in this image but it doesn't run underneath

I'm not wild about the boxed in space you have to work with but a 17 ft wide space is good. I really like your design concept except only the one wall opposite the door lends itself for the staggered panels. Just a heads up generally double doors leak sound unless you really work hard on installing door seals designed for double doors.

How important is that desk area to you?

I'm think the doors could be moved to the left to open into the desk area. I do need a small office area as I will be working a fair bit from home for the business I own in the UK and the wife will NOT be happy if I try to put it in another room or area, even though we have a huuuuuuuuuge basement/rec room

Thanks Landshark, your build is amazing and an inspiration, and your panels were what gave me the idea....I'm probably going to use BIG along the way as a remote advisor, and as much as it all excites me, the thought of doing these type of panels in sizes and shapes is pretty scary

I have now asked the architect to change the door portion onto the theatre to hopefully improve acoustics as well as light control. It will also make speaker placement a lot easier

Wowzers....my head is spinning from trying to decide my equipment. Pretty sure I'm going with the JVC RS4910 for the projector.

Not sure about the AVR, been looking and there seems some great offering s for under $700. Would love to hear advice on what you think would be best for this room. It will mostly be for movies but I also like to listen to two channel music as well. The same goes for speakers, budget will be around $2500 for 7.1 set up. Again, there seems to be such a lot of good quality equipment I could really do with advice. Tedd has given some great feedback, and I am tempted by the DIY Subwoofer by Dayton Audio http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-18-reference-series-ho-subwoofer-and-cabinet-package--300-7094
But as for the other speakers and receiver ....HELP

Yuki, my head was spinning for months trying to decide on speakers. I decided to go with HSU VTF-15H's for my subs, JTR 228 noesis for my LCR, and DIY minion 8's for my surrounds; all reasonably priced. I figured that would get me started.

Can I be a pain and get some links from you? I'm not going to rush this build so the DIY speaker deal seems appealing but my craft skills aren't the best lol
Like the idea of this HSU 5.1 then adding a left and right to them http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/hybrid15pkg.html

some pros:

A soffit can be used to run wiring inside a room's sound proof shell, with a single entry point.

The front soffit could be treated to deal with the first reflection point to the front row seats.

Soffits can contain HVAC runs and mufflers to provide for low noise floor at the vent.

Soffits can contain lighting within a room's sound proof shell.

Soffits create potential for uplighting.

Thanks, I can't believe they have made it so confusing, in fact the update is pretty crappy in general I think....will give it a go

Edit...just tried one picture and it was like pulling teeth! Surely the mods can't think this upload process is a good idea
