Single layer of 5/8" drywall or 2 layers of 1/2"

I am not doing sound isolation in my room as it won't be cost effective for me...or space effective. Some of the walls for my room are already drywalled with 1/2". I talked to my contractor about taking it down and putting up 5/8" to give it a little more mass to help a bit. He said he would just do a 2nd layer of 1/2" with green glue. I said that would be pretty expensive, but I guess he was talking about an adhesive that is green, not the CLD green glue.

So, would doing 2 layers of 1/2" be better? And would there be much reason for that glue over screws?

the ultra lightweight 1/2 drywall that is locally all that is available in the DC market weighs 39 lbs per sheet. 5/8 drywall heavy firecode is 70 lbs. There is a good chance your basement was built with the old 1/2 inch stock. You could add a layer of 5/8 over it, Green Glue would not provide much benefit if both layers are screwed directly to the studs and joists.

Thanks Big. The stuff I tore down from the ceiling didn't feel like anything more than 40 lbs. The green glue he was talking about wasn't the green glue referred to around here. It is just some contractor's adhesive...I guess it's green too. I wasn't sure what the reason for drywall adhesive really.
