Pioneer Peak Pictures

First of all, I would like to extend a HUGE Thank You! to the leaders of AVS forums for all the inspiration and knowledge you have shared. BigMouthDC!, Cinemar, Dennis Erskine, and the rest. Without you all, i would definitely would not have had the ideas to do what i am doing. Thank you!

Second, Life happens. We all have grande ideas of what we would like to see in our own rooms. Time and Money. that's what it takes. Devotion of every day going in and making it happen when you are a one person show, with outside help every now and then, and of course, the wife, kids, the dreaded work obligation, snow shoveling, and fun. Hang in there.

This is my 3rd year building, this being an on again and off again project. I had to build a shed, build a 24 x 32' addition at the parents house. Remodel a rental property, and finally have found time in the recent past to devote to the HT effort i began 3 years ago, and pretty much moth balled the HT until recently. I still read all the forums though. That has inspired me to pick it up again, that, and a little money in hand.

Started in 2011. cleared the room. built a riser. then thought, "I should do some research... "... and some more.. and some more... and...and...

So here goes.
Did a layout of stuff about 10 times. still need to update as of 12-1-2014.
ill post from the beginning and where i'm at as of now.

Front Wall
I have changed directions on the display. I was originally going with the 106" multi-format screen from monoprice along with a Epson 3050, or similar, with having a 50" Samsung Plasma as the daily watcher on a movable cart in front, or using the soffit as a swing down screen. All that got nixed.

The wife was not going to have a 50" screen in front, with a 106" screen in the back, just sitting there not getting used.

So, I am now looking at one of the 2 displays in my signature.

Bout more about the wall preparation...

I am planning to build a 2x4 wall flush against the existing wall, and put CO Safe40 in the main cavities. have a large piece of plywood to attach the mount to, approxmate 36" x 48".
this allows me to run the cables, hdmi, speaker, network, etc, in the soffit and then down to the TV and speaker locations.
then i was going to attach a layer of 1" linacoustic, and then cover with the GPower frames with additional linacoustic in those.

Assistance: Are there other suggestions that i should be doing? i was not planning on drywalling the front wall at this point.

Side walls / angles
planning on Gpower frames for the most part on all slants and main reflection walls.
in the alcove, i am planning on a diffuser on the back wall, and a gpowers panel on the frontwall, paint on the window side.

Stage
double layer of 2x6 construction, construction adhesive between both vertical layers of 2x6 to add tightness. i had already purchased and cut the 2x6's prior to actually reading how Big MouthDC builds them. Could not justify rebuiling, or throwing away the wood. tried to follow Bigs and Dennis' build designs to the best i could.
felt on the bottom
Stage is filled with insulation
screwed and glued to framing.
waiting on GG before adding second layer of 19/32" plywood.
was not going to do a 3rd layer.

Riser
Same build method as stage.

Any other thoughts i should be doing? please advise.

Additionally, i'll add more photos of my build process thus far.

Yes, i am very much so. I bought most of the gear in the last 45 days and all of it's coming in... there doesn't seem to be as many hours in the day to get this done faster.

For those of you wondering why i call the theater Pioneer Peak Pictures in The Great White North.
I live up here in Alaska and it's typically white, aka allot of snow.

Pioneer Peak is out my back door.

Wow, that's a beautiful view! I hate cold weather, but for such a sight it's almost worth it.

The room looks promising, congrats. Having the first row at 13' is a bit more than most builds here, but since it's not a projector and a fully dedicate theater it makes sense.

Looks like a great plan and a great start. If I am reading correctly you are designing to use the new Atmos system so I am very interested to see what you think of it once more Atmos movies come out.

I will share what ever I can gleam of feedback.
Atmos seems to be pretty nice overall for the immersion aspect. I just wish receivers had more than a .4 support, not that my space could handle that, but always want to see a little more I guess.

The reference system at the front of the Dolby Atmos guide seems to show a rather large system, aka commercial.
What about the HT that say have a 3rd row seating that would need a little more processing for front, middle, and rear?
I guess we will see overtime between Atmos and Auro3d as far as adoption.

Received the box of GG today. I was hoping to finish the riser, then move back to working on the stage with th GG and the second layer, of plywood but just ran out of time.
What was Completed today.
1st layer completed and bass trap ports cut. 2nd layer of plywood all cut to shape on the riser and the edges were routered. Now I have to pull off all the plywood again and mark the bass trap ports and cut them out on the second layer only.

Back at it tomorrow after work. Hopefully the commute home isn't 90 minutes again. Summer time is only 50 minutes door to door.

Well.. worked on pulling off all the layers of plywood to cut the top layer venting into it. Dennis E. i think says to use the 4x10" vents, however, i used 2x10" vents for the much smaller riser than his traditional bass trap riser designs are.
I am not sure how to go about recalculating the frequency response on this now, but i think it will be more broad spectrum based on what i have been reading.

Additionally, we have all the colors samples. Stopped at Carpet World to get new samples of carpet, as Home Depot stopped carrying the original selection we had chose.

I ended up getting 21 different GOM samples. all within the color pallet we have choosen.

We narrowed it down to a handful of choices, but, still becomes a difficult choice. I have a new respect for those that have a minds eye to coordinate all of these types of colors and actually make it look good on some of the DIY shows you watch. At least my daughter and I had a good time selecting all the choices.

Also received the "step lights" from amazon. Royal pacific lights. suppose to be able to fit in the 1-gang electrical box(8905WH), however, what they sent were the much larger "step lights" (8904SL LED). i was kinda shock on how i was going to fit this light in. oh well.. guess i'll send them back and have them ship me what i ordered..

I know all about delays and having to do other projects in the house. I just restarted after a four year break :-)
I will follow your thread, since you are doing some of the same things as I am doing, like bass trap in riser and Atmos.

I envy you on the GOM color picking process - mine was so rushed since I was moving back to Denmark from Alabama and wanted to order enough GOM for the project before my container was shipped... I ended up having Bryan Pape pick them for me, based on my two requirements of dark (for picture quality) and classic. I now have a roll of burgundy and a roll of black. It will work, but I might have picked something else after spending 100+ hours more on avsforum :-D

Cheers,
Jacob

Very productive day yesterday.

My wife and I finished the riser and the stage yesterday with the GG and top layer of plywood. Green checks on the project list is always a win.

Then we moved onto painting the front wall and the 2x4"'s. Not that we expect to see any of this wood once the front wall is completed, however, if something happens to show through, I didn't want any raw colored wood appearing. Plus it has an appealing affect when it's all black on what the final product is going to look like anyway.

Had to wait for paint to dry. So we decided to head to Image Audio, the local electronic dealer, and happens to be the company I bought amost of all my speaker gear from. Needed to get a mount for the new TV. Wanted to have that in hand.

The guy I was working with for the last 3 months was gone. So at that point, I wanted to pick up all my gear, definitely did not want them to lose sight of that.
So what great moment it was.

Such a thing of beauty!

Upgraded the surround back left and right to RS-42's. Better balance with 5.1 content I'm thinking.

I got the OK to move it in the bedroom. I quickly did that before she saw the wall of speakers, and changed her mind.
