Another Aussie Home Theatre

Well it begins! We've decided on a HT provider (Electronic Living in Brisbane, Australia) and the carpenter has started to raise the floor at the rear of the room. 2 windows should be framed up within days and the doors should arrive within the next 2 weeks. Pre-wiring for AV and lighting is due to start this Thursday.

The budget for the AV side of things came in just a tad over $18k installed (including most products, labor and programming). Due to budgets, we were not too focused on sound proofing. We concentrated on getting a solid door (but not anything commercially rated) with quality acoustic seals. The side/rear windows are being filled in and going to be filled with acoustic insulation. The big (rear of room) window faces the street so unfortunately is not going to have anything except a large curtain over it.

Sound treatment is going to consist of on the wall panels and will be decided upon later due to door being positioned in a "prime" spot.

Room to be painted a very dark bluey/grey, just a tad off black.

Equipment list:
  • Epson TW9200 Projector [existing equipment]
  • Peerless projector mount + extension pole
  • 130" 16:9 projector screen (Majestic EVO) [existing equipment]
  • Apple TV [existing equipment]
  • Roku media player
  • NAS network storage – rack mount
  • C-Bus 4-way fully programmed
  • Blu-ray player [to be determined]
  • Sanus 15RU AV equipment rack
  • Cool Components rack ventilation system
  • Thor A-12B power & surge 8-way power board
  • Integra DTR50.6 AV surround receiver
  • Aaron CC240 centre speaker
  • Aaron ATS-4 main speakers
  • Aaron SS-200 bi-pole surround speakers [middle speakers]
  • Current Audio CS654DBFL dipole/bipole rear surround in-ceiling speakers [in-ceiling due to window positioning]
  • Sunfire SDS12 subwoofer
  • RTI XP-3 control processor
  • Apple Extreme router

To be decided:
  • Blu-ray player
  • Curtain, carpet and paint colour
  • Air conditioning (split system or floor mounted)
  • Seating

What are your room dimensions, and what size screen are you going for?

It's approximately 4 metres (13.1') wide and 5 metres (16.4') long. The rise 2 metres (6.6') from the back wall. Going for only 1 row, plus some bean bags on the floor area in front of the lounge.

Screen size is 16:9 at 130".

We have decided to ditch the front "row" of bean bags and extend the rise forward to ensure there is enough room behind for a 7.1 set-up. We'll be sitting closer to the 130" screen so might have to upgrade in the future if it gets too close.

Can anyone recommend a good distance to be from the rear surround speakers?

Here are some photos of the extended platform with centre step as well as the two windows in the room we are blocking. The other side of these boards is just plain white.

The screen wall with a window being blocked out

The platform being extended with a step in the centre

The side window which is also being filled in

Hi all!

The pre-wiring is getting done tomorrow morning so I'd LOVE some feedback on the downlight locations!

Zone 1: Screen wash
Zone 2: Rear curtain wash
Zone 3: 2x above floor area and 2x above seating
Zone 4: LED rope lighting under platform edge

Any and all feedback would be much appreciated!

Good idea. I've decided to split the two sets of downlights mid room and over seats into two separate zones. I'll combine the screen wall and rear curtain wall into one zone as I am limited to four zones.

Here's a little update for you all!

The ceiling rose removed and a new manhole added (it's not centred due to beam)

The doors leading into the theatre (not yet painted)

Side of the room yet to be painted (this used to be a window)

The screen wall before painting (note: window used to be on the left-hand side)

First or second coat of black paint to darken walls/ceiling

Finished walls/ceiling - it's just a few shades under black

Another view of the finished colour (it's a bit brighter due to direct sunlight from window)
