I don't use it unless a client has money to burn, I like Joanne's Royality 3 at 25% of the cost with a coupon.

I agree with Jeff. I just completed my front wall of the theater with that black velvet from JoAnn's. I compared the JoAnn's to some left over product from a previous theater where I used SyFabrics' Black Plush Triple Velvet. From what I could tell, they were the exact same product.

My past experience is that you can blow through the Joanne fabric (with force) not the Syfabrics. But products do change over time.

This is the on-going resource to combative light and reflections in an HT

"Black" Theater Improvment Thread (Once you go black you never go back?)

A lot of examples of making one's own panels, which velvet ppl prefer, where to buy etc etc. Paint etc is also discussed at great length.

You don't need velvet behind the screen if you can't see it, but you should paint the wall flat black. If the wall behind the screen is white or light colored, and there is any gap between the screen and the wall, light will pass through the fabric and bounce off the wall, washing out the blacks and lowering your contrast ratio.

My screen was close enough to the ceiling and side walls that I simply wrapped the velvet around Vertical 2X10's and a horizontal 2X6.

That's what I thought you would say. I guess I will be sticking to the original plan of GOM.

Not the velvet that the OP posted about, but I just went to JoAnn's today to pick up some more Royalty 3 velvet. They only had a few yards left, and when they looked it up, it showed that it was being discontinued and they wouldn't be getting any more. They did not know if there was going to be a replacement for it.
