Bonus Room Atmos Theater - 5 Day Project

Off to the Races!

I started yesterday (Fri) on this rather impromptu Home Theater in Memphis.

In the attempt to keep things simple, and the budget low, choices were made carefully so a promise of "Movies next Saturday" could be made....and kept.

All ya all will be able to bear witness as to the success of failure of this attempt.

Except for the laying of new Carpet next Thursday, this will be a one Man show. Also keep in mind that Monday will be a wash, owning to my taking the Wife and another couple 200 miles north into the Totality Path of the coming Eclipse. BBQ-Beer-& Dark Glasses. Sun Fun.

Schedule as follows....

Last Friday
  • Removal Of Old (almost new)Carpet (Transferred to my Bedroom! )
  • Selected and ordered New Carpet
  • Repair of Mount Holes & Cable Entries of Previous Flat Screen
  • Painting of 3 Walls & Ceiling with Glidden Diamond Flat Enamel in "Peppercorn"
  • Initial Coat of Glidden Satin Oil Base Enamel on Trim. (also "Peppercorn")

Tuesday (in order)
  • Priming of Screen Wall
  • Construction of Seating Platform
  • Installation of Clark Tactiles in Floor & Platform

Wednesday (in order)
  • Wiring & Installation of 22 HAS Audio Transducers
  • Wiring of 4 - 4" New Eyeball Spots to new Wall IR-Dimmer Switch * (Double Gang to incl. Step Lights)
  • Wiring of 2 Step Lights to Double Gang Wall Switch *
  • Paint Black Flame Screen Wall

Thursday (in order)
  • Finish any Remaining Screen Painting
  • Wire Electrical & HDMI for Projector - Install Drop
  • Installation of Lutron Maestro IR Dimmer
  • Installation of 5 Single Gang 110ac Outlets (Rear Wall and Platform Face)
  • Carpet Installation
  • Installation of Can Lights & Step Lights

Friday
  • Assemble A/V Rack
  • Install Projector & A/V Gear
  • Accept Delivery / Installation of 9 Seat-Craft Rialto Theater Chairs
  • Test Run System, Calibrate Audio / Video

Saturday will see a Movie Night for a Full House.

Below are diagrams and images of what is, and what is to come.

Not on the List Above but included in System Price: Harmony Elite IR-RF Remote w/Smartphone App.

Sony 4K BlueRay is the UBP-x800

Here is a look at the Rialtos

Premium Top Grade Leather - Power Recline - Lighted Cup Holders (no Base Lighting) - Standard Height Version

Daily Updates to follow.....no matter how my ambitious schedule pans out. It is my hope that this project will empower others to attempt projects that will not take an overlong time to realize.

A final "BTW"....total projected cost of everything:

$16,500.00 "Turn Key"
( $6500.00 less Chairs and Mercenary Labor costs. )

I like projects like these, because they give you a 'challenge'..The room shape in itself is the major challenge (with the angled walls/ceiling). And I assume that the lighting will also be a challenge b/c of the room shape. With all that said, your 'game plan' seems very SOLID, and I imagine that room being completed 'just in time' :-) And for anyone else looking at this build, I would like to recommend the use of a 'Shadow Box' for your screens! A 'Shadow Box' basically uses very dark black material (like velvet) to absorb any light rejection coming off the screen. It's an amazing improvement that I witnessed in my theater (link in my Sig). Going from a flat black paint to velvet was the biggest improvement I ever made in my theater. KEEP US POSTED MississippiMan

PS. are you going with LED can lights, or incandescent? I only ask because I used to have LED's, but my eyes got tired of that kind of illumination, and went with incandescents (even at the cost of more heat in the room).

I have the same Lutron IR dimmer switch and he's installing and it's only for incandescent.

Interesting build and good luck with everything, MississippiMan!

Bulbs are Halogen (Dimmable)
4"ers so heat isn't any issue.

Thank you both for your comments and well wishes!

You are a man on a mission! Interesting project. Just a FYI you can get a 10 pack of those fixtures for $9 a fixture on Amazon. I spray paint the trims black, I use dimmable LED bulbs that fit nicely in those fixtures and really cut down on the heat. Often I use 16-20 in a theater so the heat of halogens adds up.

With these specific Lutron Dimmers, they cannot do LED properly...only incandescent. I've tried, but the dimmer uses a lot of analog circuitry, as they are pretty old in design (circa 2002 ish). I love mine though, and control them with my URC remote and harmony remote. BIGmouthinDC , I have also spray-painted my can trims a gloss black...it looks awesome!

How is the effect of one TST209 on that big riser? I have a Clarke Gold on one of my 2 attachable loveseats and there's a huge seat to seat difference when I attach them.

In the installation of such Tactiles as the TST209, efficient transfer of the Tactile force across the broadest possible area is critical.

Admittedly, I do things a bit differently that others...at times.

The Rise is a case in point.

2 x 10 Front Face.
2 x 6 Floor Joists so that there is less mass to resonate
The Floor joists are "floating" 4" above the Sub-Floor.
A 72" deep Platform set solidly in the Front & Rear is rigid enough to span that distance.
The 2 x 6 "Bridge" that spans between 6 Joists (5 -14" spaces) distributes the Tactile Force across that area very effectively.

Is the effect commensurate to having 2 or 4 placed similarly? Certainly not, at least as far as "localized" impact is concerned.

But I have never been a Fan of "localized" Tactile impact. It's not natural. ...unless one wants to consider / experience each and every explosion of Dinosaur stomp directly under their Bum.

I like to make a somewhat lessor impact-oriented statement across a broad area. Explosions not set off under the viewer should "shake" the Environment, they are not akin to having a Troll with a Hammer under your chair giving your Kiester a Bass Enema.

...unless your inured to that sort of thing.

The inevitable goal being to couple with the Floor Sub's output and create a realistic (...but wholly under control...) Bass Wave Front that sweeps across / through the sound stage. My goal is to create "Shudders" & "Trembles" primarily, but when a dramatic LFE effect is output, the Tactile Force is not entirely localized.

Of course, those without Riser or Sub-Floor availability can't follow the above dictates. As such, I weep for them...and their Arses.

Thanks for the explanation, since you're adding insulation will it also double as a bass trap?

I'll have to remember this when the time comes for me to build it, I'll be needing the for dummies version of the plan

I'm sorry MississippiMan , but I love my 'Troll with a hammer' under my bum....BUT, Fortunately I am protected with a layer of foam and leather I do have another buttkicker in the back riser in my theater (8" tall riser with traditional theater seats 5' square with 2x6's, 3/4 in. plywood ), and it's indeed interesting (and true) that the 'effect' is WAY MORE EVEN and controlled. Probably because I built it like a brick sh*t house I agree with the chair-application though, without any riser these buttkickers are pretty wacky.

Progress report.

Done:

Tuesday (in order)
  • Construction of Seating Platform (...what a chore!!!!)

Pictures to hopefully follow tomorrow.

However there has been a change in schedule due to a Family tragedy. My younger Sister's only Son passed unexpectedly yesterday, and I must leave for Indy tomorrow for the Memorial. Obviously my Customer has given me leave to adjust my schedule to a Monday finish-out.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and wishes toward this sad time.

Bass Tactile and Sub Woofer system got an upgrade today to include 2 Clark TST239's and another Klipsch Sub

So now there will be 2- TST209's under the Platform and 2- TST239's on the Floor, as well as 1 additional Klipsch K100-SW

I've decided to fly into Indy instead of driving so I can wait to leave Saturday early afternoon, and get back all the more quickly.

Peservering....

I will return to the jobsite on Wednesday AM.

Got the Black Flame Screen Wall completed and the JVC hung before my departure. Sony 4K BD-DVD works splendidly...a quick preview of GOTG-Vol-2 in HDR was awesome to behold.

One setback....Parts Express let me down and only shipped 1 Clark TST239'er instead of 2, so the completion of the Platform (...and hence the Carpet...) is delayed until the 4th. That's cuttin' it mighty close to my leaving for CEDIA.

BTW...anyone who needs a Free CEDIA Pass, PM me soon.

I'm back in town now, but might not get much else done beyond prepping for the coming Harvey Rain Bands, and having to wait for my remaining Clark Tactile. As such I've stopped my "Day Count" at 4 days, and will resume it probably by Saturday (Tactile Arrival Day)

My heart is in Houston, and my prayers are said for the thousands affected. I know several AVS'es there, as well as 4 Customers, and really there are very few places that are immune from flooding except highway overpasses.

Thank you-s are due to those expressing thoughts over my Family's recent loss.

As for me, I must have my Stars aligned because I just got word my missing Tactile was shipping Overnight in today's outgoing shipments, so it will go in Tomorrow around Noon, and if the Carpet can go in tomorrow afternoon......BINGO!

Not using Atoms.....using Audio Transducers.

And what with a maximum of 13.5' room depth, there simply isn't the need nor the capability to have a 5.4.4 system

So we are "settling" for a 5.4.2 system

More cool'ness,

The shipment of the 9 Rialto Theater Chairs was delayed just long enough for an additional $900.00 discount for Free Power Recline to be applied. That does help take the sting out of the delayed Platform / Carpet installation.

On my way over to do some stuff and get ready for that Clark's arrival!

The Tactile is installed...The Platform complete.

And wonders of wonders....my Carpet Installer delivered the Carpet in a Monsoonal Downpour (courtesy of Harvey) and is in the process of installing said floor covering.

Sooooo...............we are back on track! 1 Friday in arrears, and the Theater Seats don't arrive until the 11th, but essentially, as of tomorrow afternoon, it's Movie Time!

Bean Bag Chairs and Patio Loungers are the order of business.

Finished Up last night......,

Here is a triad of Transducer Installation examples:

'

After I gave the Wifey owner the most basic of instructions on System use, I didn't want to intrude on their desire to watch Guardians Of The Galaxy 4K/Atmos.... so I just snapped a couple of shots off my Avatar Demo.

I'm heading back there today to do my own tweaking, program their Harmony Elite, and to take some Room / Screen Shots.

After that I'm going to make myself scarce until the Chairs arrive late next week.
