I didn't see that anyone else mentioned it, but the consistant "jaw dropper" at our house is the Imax "Mysteries of Egypt" helicopter flight down the Blue Nile Gorge in Ethiopia. I've been there and seen it a long time ago.

Something about those thousands of tons of water crashing down at you from all sides of the surround sound. It follows up with some pretty cool fly over scenes after that too.

I had "Pipe Dream" on my demo DVD, but I'm updating it to the 5.1 WS version. I also noticed that several of the chapters have alternate camera angles that you can toggle with the remote. That's a neat (gimmicky) feature of DVD that's hardly ever used.

Clarence,

I plan to do the same think with DVD shrink. Any tips for me or things to look out for??

I wanted to have a short title that preceeds each clip, something like:

"My name is Gladiator... then you get that scene from Gladiator, etc..

Can you do a title screen before each clip?? What do you do ??

Thx!!

Rip DVDs to your hard drive using DVD Decrypter.

In DVD Shrink, select the "re-author" icon, not "full disc".

Select the "DVD Browser" tab and browse to each DVD on your hard drive.

Drag each DVD into the "DVD Structure" on the left side of the screen.

Right-click on each DVD and use "Start/End Frames" you can select chapters or specific h:mm:ss. The built in player is useful to test the selected segments and to make sure that you've chosen the right version (e.g., fullscreen vs widescreen).

TIP: Right-click each clip and select "Set Default Stream" and choose "Play the following audio stream". If a clip has DTS, I choose it. Otherwise it would sometimes default to only stereo.

TIP: I make sure the "Compression Settings" tab for each clip is set to "No compression" instead of the default "Automatic".

Finally, just click "Backup!" and DVD Shrink makes the ISO and burns it to a DVD+R with Nero.

I haven't messed with adding menus or titles yet.

I too use music DVD's to Demo my theater.

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense - Burning Down the House - Awesome sound and concert lighting
Santana - Supernatural Live - Migra - The colors just POP on this DVD and this is a great soft to rocking song

If people push for video demos then I use some DVR's HD football games that also have great 5.1 sound and the AOTC astroid chase. Those are my staples but of course there are so many others most of which have been listed here. If it is an purely audio crowd then I spin some DVD-A's from AIX records.

Laters,

I have come to dislike the infamous pod race scene - as it seems that the LFE in particular is not consistent through the scene and sometimes seems to be "missing" when there should be some.

I have come to like the 1st battle scene of Master & Commander or the depth charge scene from U-571 a lot more.

Saving Private Ryan has proved too much for most people I know - it becomes an assault on the senses and I have found that it turns off people if that is their first experience. (A bit too much for me I may add)

The new DD intro that is on the SW trilogy is great as well - falls under the 5 minute time though :)

Still though one of my favs is the crash scene in Donnie Darko - all is nice and quiet - then WHAM!!!!!!!!!!! Gets em every time and scenes like that are way more effective than ones that are just a constant barrage IMHO.

I made a demo disc exactly the way Clarence describes with 10 clips on it. At the end of each clip, the last frame freezes for a second then the next clip starts. I believe this is due to each clip being put on the disc as a separate "title" instead of chapters of the same title.

I'd love to know how to re-author the disc to make them chapters instead of titles. Anyone know?

Hi Clarence,

I just wanted to say thanks very much for sending me the demo disk. V. nice quality and choice of demos. Mine crashes consistently at the start of the Animusic scene, but up until that point it's great. Thanks for taking the time to send it!

I have different demos for different people.

For guys who equate loud with good: the Hell Unleashed and Battle of Carthage chapters in Gladiator

For people who understand surround sound: the rivot popping scene in Das Boot (superbit - german DTS) - then the next scene with faint dripping all around you.

For the ladies: Legends of the Fall - if they see Brad Pitt, they assume my theater is awsome.

For Kids: Finding Nemo (shark Uh-Oh mine explosion scene for the Dad's)

I like so many different scenes...the list goes on and on....

Fith Element ~ Zorgs' ZX-1 Demo to the Mangalords

ToyStory II ~ Opening Sequence Buzz goes to battle Zorg (hmm a pattern)

U571 ~ The Dark Rain Scene when BonJovi get the manhole cover in the head after the first Sub get's torpedoed

Jurrassic Park !! T-Rex escapes and terrorizes the kids

Gone In 60 Seconds (2000) "Raines" taking the Mustang for a ride

Those are the ones that get me going....which is what I am going to do now...rip and zip these up...

Great Idea Clarence

My favorite scene to demonstate impact (both visual and auditory) is the opening crash scene in Pitch Black. Try watching it at reverence levels and checking your heart rate afterwards.

I like matrix reloaded. The explosion scene is very good for bass. The forest scene in gladiator. The depth charge scene in U-571.

OK, I'll start the LFE bass scenes for "Demo DVD 2: Attack of the Buttkickers"

1) U-571 depth charges

2) Finding Nemo: "Swim away" (torpedo/mines exploding), followed by Nemo swimming into the glass walls when dumped into the aquarium, and Darla thumping on the glass.

3) Matrix explosion

4) Lion King "Circle of Life"... I love the subtle boom of the elephant's footsteps

5) Jurassic Park - ripples in the glass

In "Knick Knack" above (the snowglobe) I love the dynamite explosion

suggestions for about 15 more?

A couple more suggestions for your LFE disc Clarence...

2. First battle scene in Master & Commander

Ok I can add a coupleI haven't seen mentioned... In the WMVHD IMAX Speed DVD http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...v=glance&s=dvd the sequence where the Jet Dragsters are popping the engines WOW! and what about the Super Speedway DVD. The sequence where they are testing the car and the flag stands are wizzing by your head has nice sound and picture.
