What's the best way to paint ceiling tiles and which paint? Looking for that black hole effect with no sheen.

Thanks

Have you already bought the drop ceiling? If not, keep in mind they do make black panels.

When will D* stop pushing HD-Lite while charging us for full HD? Digital input on a CRT is a reality, not a possibility.

If you run a search using "painting" you'll find a few threads addressing your specific question.

Here is a thread about black ceiling tiles that showed using the search function THE fastest way to find your answers:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hlight=ceiling

and there are others too that talk about retailers of black ceiling tiles.

Let me work on my memory. There is a company that specializes in commercial building supplies that I contacted here in Atlanta (they are not local, IIRC). I think it was USG that actually manufactured them.

As someone who recently finished painting about 100 ceiling drop tiles. I used regular cheap old Home Depot Behr paint. Flat black. I rolled each dropped tile and took a brush to get the edges. Although if i had a paint sprayer I probably could gone faster. Make sure you have a good dense roller to get all the crevices. Otherwise my ceiling looks great.

Another thing I have done is cut acoustic tiles 2x2 and wrap them in black fabric that works good too.

Many HDs rent sprayers.

Thanks

Doing that completely destroys any mid and high frequency sound absorption of the tile. USG, Capaul, and Hunter-Douglas make black tiles, it's easier, will look better, and will have better absorption (depending on the tile and depending on how much absorption you are looking for).

I know this sounds totally absurd and maybe incomprehensible, but can you believe I wasn't concerned about the detriment to the mid and high frequencies as much as I was concerned about a big white ceiling I needed black as inexpensively as possible.

I understand that you alter the acoustical qualities of drop tiles by adding a thin layer of paint to it. But, I am guessing that absent of purchasing all new black tiles, most of us on a budget when faced with an exisiting ceiling full of white tiles would rather paint it and enjoy the dark ceiling and spend the money on more meaningful things like the gear or treating more important areas of the room.

I agree with you if you have the budget, replacing the tiles with black tiles would be appropriate or wrapping them in black FR701.

Another poster on a thread I read here at AVS today was talking about the merits of Sherwin Williams flat black paint.

Said it had no sheen to it and used a different formulation than others - used a resin for a base -
