My bad on the Planar. Now I recall after seeing your pic again. I too am very curious to hear your initial impressions. That's a DLP right?

Queen DLP, right,

My initial reaction was influenced by the reviews and the test results of Tom Huffman, (my actual machine) so part of what I saw might be Psychological.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=225

When I fired it up, the image was good and sharp and the colors seemed much more natural. Maybe it was because I was expecting it, but anyway I am happy. Like many you can ponder whether you made the right decision such as should I have waited and just went with the new Panasonic at about a quarter of what I will have invested to get this projector fully implemented. Or how about the new Infocus coming out. Then there is the RS35. It's maddening.

This is a handheld shot, a little more blurry than the actual and the yellowish tint was as filmed . Anyway another serving of Megan Fox over metal, Michael Bay's homage to the looking under the hood picture from Transformers I.

so you just have a roll of ruebens smx screen material laying around? now thats funny.

I'm not finding that funny at all. Not that I have one too, or anything. This COULD turn out to be the one thing I regret buying early. And I bought a Denon 3806. OK, TWO things I may regret buying early. AND an SVS Sonotube. THREE, THREE things I may regret....

BUT I HAVEN'T BOUGHT A PROJECTOR YET. That Panny 4K is looking pretty good.

Big is this with the Lens?

If I had it to do all over again, I'd still hit that shot.

Figured so. Good approach to see the difference once installed. Be interested in your take on the visual improvement, adding a lens is somewhat spendy

If I had it to do all over again, I'd still hit that shot.

Ruben is now on his third generation fabric each was a step forward. As I understand the step to #2 made an improvement with the moire problem at 1080P resolution, I think 3# went further and I think was a smoother surface

I have version 1. If I am going to DIY a screen I think I want to put the best DIY fabric on it. I think right now that is the Seymour.

But if someone has a different opinion I would like to hear it.

Hopefully nothing. That original screen material was tested/recommended using older 720p projectors. I don't recall seeing any tests of that particular material used with the newer 1080i/p projectors. It's possible (notice I said "possible") that the weave of that material and the pixel size of a 1080 projector MAY (notice I said, MAY) not work as well. Rueben HAS identified material that he HAS tested with 1080 projectors. The problem is the manufacturers figured out what he was using their material for, raised the price substatntially and then started to market it as "screen material."

I've seen some prices of manufactured AT screens coming down, so the DIY aspect/cost savings of it may not be there any longer.

I didn't get in right away on the SMX material. I got in when he was not allowed to sell it for DIY, then had a small opening where he could sell it again, before closeing it to DIY for good. That is when I jumped in.

Guess I will try it and see if it works, if not, then I will research whatever is next to try.

Same here. I don't think it was that he wasn't ALLOWED to sell it for DIY, but that he converted over to a true business model making screens. It was a somewhat sudden announcemnt, a lot of guys said if they had known they woud have purchased, so a small window opened up for people who had expressed an interest earlier.

I thought I had heard some of his distributors he wanted to sell through would not accept his stuff if he undersold them and just sold the material himself to us lowely DIYers. So before that contract was finalized he had one last opportunity for us.

I have to agree with you on this Big. If I were building my screen today I would be using Seymour's XD. If I ever upgrade my projector to a 1080P model I will swap out my screen material for it. When I built my screen I used a screen spline which will allow me to easily swap it out.

I have an unused roll of the PF4500 that I will try to figure out how to use for teh back yard movies and will be using the Semour AV XD as well. Tried to half heartily sell the 4500 with no success.

If I had it to do all over again, I'd still hit that shot.

Compare that to Seymours 60 bucks a yard or $19.95 per linear ft and easily one would choose the XD with the better weave and a small increase in gain as well.
